BFT on Big Blue Friday 12-8-17
I had a play date set up with BLFG to molest some whitefish today on Bear Lake. BFT was well represented on the old Blue Pond today...both by boaters and waders. Saw Old Coot and his trio of whitie whackers and wader GSP over by second point. Later met up with GMWahl and partner in his boat off Gus Rich Point. I know of several other members who were fishing out of Cisco Beach or other areas that we did not meet up with.

D-D-D-D-Damned cold this morning. Mid teens at 8:30 launch. My sensitive right index finger did not feel much until late morning. I guess that is why I let Scott catch the first three whities before I got started. But as the sun climbed the air warmed and the water stayed calm. One of the nicest days you could imagine for Big Blue in December. A lot different than the nasty weather all during the whitefish run last year.

The fish were scattered, picky and light biting. It took searching to find them and finesse to catch them. Still, most anglers we saw were picking up a few whitefish. And there were a couple of cutts taken. One was by a bank tangler right in front of our boat. The other was caught by Scott...after I lured it in to the boat with my jig and kept it around for a short time by working the jig a bit. Then Scott dropped down one of my hot chartreuse Roadrunners and the flustered cutty smacked it.

We were trying to figure how to score the catch. One thought was that it was a "tag-team" effort...or "bait and switch". Scott tried to pin it on me that I was chumming for him...illegal. At any rate, it was cool to see that purty fish all agitated and zooming around under the boat...and then snarfing the jig in plain view. Frosting on a fine day's cake.

The bite seemed to drop off noticeably about noonish. Coot and his gang left right about noon. We followed a while later...after a brief stop back at Gus Rich point. We picked up a couple more fish at our last stop and watched GMWahl's boatmate score a nice whitie just before we left. Hope they did well after a late start.

We caught fish on several different jigs today, but the best seemed to be those with green or olive in them...Roadrunners or small plastics...everything tipped with worm. I briefly tried some fligs but only tried the white one I had tied on when we got there and never did try a variety. But I satisfied myself that the "hangershot" sinker setup works well at avoiding rock snags. I do believe that with the right combo of jig color, length of leader and speed of retrieve that they would do some damage.

Thanks Scott for an enjoyable day. Also, thanks to the ladies in your family for the great chocolate goodies they sent home with me. Some even made it all the way home. Burp. Yum.

What a gorgeous day for December on Bear Lake. Lots of pressure on the big pond today for sure. One thing I must note. The guys who are using electric trolling motors on "spot lock" in 8-12' of water are scaring more fish than they are catching AND spooking the fish so others nearby aren't catching much either. I noticed when we were away from the electric motors constantly twisting and turning and kicking on/off, the fishing was better. My advice: use a real anchor! Only use the electric motor to move about when necessary to undo a snag. Fun day, great company, and the fish even cooperated. Some toad whitefish were landed today.

We caught a 20 fish limit on Wednesday this week and didn't quite get a limit today. Some of the female WF we were catching were starting to drop eggs. So, I'm guessing the run will be peaking in the next few days and should last through next week before tapering off quickly.

Nice seeing you out on the water today Pat. I had no idea that you actually had legs! All the other times I've seen you you've it's only been from the belly up!

That was one of the prettiest days of fishing I've had in a while, but the fishing could have been a little faster. After you and Scott went in we caught about 8 more including three that needed to be weighed at pugstones to see if they would place in the whitefish contest. I was able to grab the third place slot with my biggest at 3.338 or something like that. I'll be back tomorrow for one last crack at a contest fish, but it will be tough to take first place because the new leader is a 4.1ish pound fatty.

You sure picked a purty day to come up and fish!

Mike

P.S. Scott is dead on about the electric motors spooking fish. We had a school right below us and my partner tried to swing the back of the boat to get a better position over them and the shot off like a cat coming out of a dryer. VERY obvious that the electric motor spooks them.

Hey Mike I seen you called as I was driving through the canyon and had appointments when I got home so I didn't get time to call ya back. Sorry about that. We didn't do very well at the marina. I ended up with 3 but 16" was the best one so not too hot for us but they sure are fun to catch. We should of moved but sometimes I get too bullheaded thinking I'll brute force the fish into biting and it just doesn't work too well. Glad you got a tank. Nice job. Later J

Yeah, it was all (mostly) good today. The Wyoming guys even stayed a couple of boats away...although they did squeeze in pretty close between two other boats. Wonder what kind of angling etiquette course they have to pass up there to get a fishing license.

Care to add any of your colorful commentary on that issue?

Good to see you too Mike. Yeah, the last time we shared the water I was in a floating rubber thingy. Yes, I do have legs. But my knees are giving me some grief lately. Growing old may be better than the alternative but it ain't for wimps.

Good luck in your quest for the big whities. I think the contest has put a lot more folks on the lake looking for them. Kinda makes it tougher for the "regulars" who are simply out for a nice day on the water. And, yes, yesterday was a beauty. Thanks for ordering the nice weather for my annual visit.

GSP and i were on the shore just of 2nd point Friday morning too. It really was great weather. Bank fish was good for those with waders, but it looked like we got mostly smaller males. You do need waders if your afraid to bring the boat.
Tell me why can't you catch them at night?
I included a picture of the launch at Cisco beach. I would not use it.

Glad you were able to get a few Jeff. I was just calling to see how many you got or if it was good for you. Once this is over I'm thinking it's going to be hard deck fishing for me!

I knew you were going up but didn't know you were wading it. Is the ramp at Cisco completely underwater?

The higher water this year has definitely altered the places and the tactics for whitefish...especially for the wading contingent. But probably because of the contest I have never seen so many guys wading off second point. And all seemed to be catching at least something. Interesting that your catch was mostly smaller males. A couple of my biggest fish I caught from the boat were caught by pitching back in toward shore. I suspect that the ratio will even out more as the females get riper and the spawn gets into full swing. The horny guys are always the first to show up at the dance...for most species...like humans.

Not sure why whitefish are not known as nocturnal feeders. Many of their family (salmonids) are. Guess it is like the yellow perch. Even though they are related to the notoriously nocturnal walleye, perch go dormant after dark.

Hey Mike, yup it's getting time to put the boats away for the year. My trolling motor was froze up and took a couple minutes to warm up enough for the flow to get back to full stream. And everything is so much harder when it's this cold. Bring on the hard deck for me. Wish I could get one more whitefish run in but this week doesn't look good for taking a day off. Thanks for the tips, I should have heeded them better, but the big motor didn't want to start and I wasn't going to try that distance on a trolling motor. Well just lucky I got a couple to treat our efforts. Don't know why the ice is so slow thickening this year. It's been below freezing since Monday and there's only 2" on my pond. It will hold me but I don't like to chance that thin of ice. Still foggy and cold here but ice isn't growing to safe thickness very fast. I expect the crazy crew to hit Mantua soon on 2" but I think I need 4" to feel safe. Maybe next weekend. Where you looking at starting the ice? Later J

I'm looking to start ice fishing wherever the ice is at least 4-5" and clear. Hopefully Hyrum, Mantua, or Montpelier Reservoir.

Pat, it was good to see you and Scott again. Anymore, seeing you two guys only comes once a year ... during the whitefish run.

KokeMaster invited me and my brother to join him this year in his new Lund. Boy, that is one sweet boat.

We started fishing around 7:00 and caught a few right out of the gate. In general, white catching was generally slow but steady. We expected to catch more than we did but still we did lots better than last weekend. We only got half our limits. I suspect that the run has yet to peak. Seems a little late this year.

Also, for us, all of our fish were considerably smaller than in years past.

We caught fish on crappie tubes, your PB&J road runners, and even some small swim baits. The lure that caught the most fish for us was one Nate's road runners that was a "knockoff" of your PB&Js. Colors that caught fish were forest green, green & chartreuse, every color of your PB&Js that I had in my box, and grey/silver/black/clear swim baits.

True, we didn't fill our limits, but we sure had a good time fishing.

The fun of the party was dampened a bit when my brother went to get in his truck to back the trailer down the ramp when he seen that someone had backed into the door of his truck. Sure would be nice to know who did that. I think we'd like to have a little chat with them.

The weather was great and so was the company.

Again, good to see you guys again.

Good to see you again, old friend. Getting to be fewer times and further apart. If it weren't for whitefish I might forget what you look like. Then, again, it is hard to recognize anybody all bundled up for the cold at Bear Lake.

Glad you guys got into some fish. Wish it could have been better for everybody. I'm thinking that the contest this year has resulted in more pressure and the fish are more skittish. Sure seemed a lot harder to catch anything when there was a lot of company around...especially the guys off Gus Rich point that were all running spot lock motors. As soon as they set up the fish boogied.

We caught fish on several colors too. But as Scott correctly tipped me off, jigs with green in them seemed to outperform some of the old standards. In fact, Scott caught most of his fish on a little crawdad colored plastic tube jig...but some on my "green meanie" roadrunners too.

We caught a few small fish, but we also caught some up to 21 inches. Didn't seem to notice them being any smaller than previous years. But I have had reports from others that paralleled your observations...smaller fish. Funny though, there have been some really big fish caught this year and it was predicted by Scott that the state record might be broken this year.

Sorry to hear of Terry's truck. Some people. Not even a note? Burn.

Keep in touch. We will have to come up with some kind of feeble excuse to get together more often.

Looked like the ice was growing on Hyrum today. Maybe next week it will get there. Mantua should make it next week too. Be fun to get on ice and see if we can catch some fish. First day with that new finder I thought it was going to be easy on ice this year, but I've had several trips since that has let me know that just cause you found fish doesn't mean they're going to bite. Does let you know the fish are there better though. Hope we can get together on ice sometime. Later J

I actually DO know what that looks like, but in my defense I was 14 and the statute of limitations has looong since run out!.....and I've repented!

Not overly fond of catkind. Gotta chortle at the mental image.

Aren't you glad that cats do not grow as big as elephants...live as long...or have long memories. Even though you have repented the cat may not have completely forgiven you.

I suppose you also used to tie flies...after pulling off their little wings. Beast.
