the ice very's on the lake.. the dam is open water, there was open water from the dam to the west side, that has refrozen.. the south end looked ok but not been there.. out in frount of the rocks on the north east side is 10 to 12 inchs of solid ice easy to walk on once ya get to the ice.. not much snow to pull a sled on tell ya get to the ice..

Awesome catch and story along with video.

We're fortunate to have this species in Utah for folks to target. Thank you to the DNR/DWR for doing this.

Glad you found one willing and another almost committed.

With that being said here's some constructive educational feedback:

Boga grips are great for controlling the head of a fish but to hold them in an extended vertical position for pictures isn't recommended.

Boga grips are to control the fish especially its head and as I see it not hold them for photo ops. If the fish thrashes about well literally you'll cause extensive damage to fish. May seem okay but highly unlikely it survived even when released especially if it thrashed about before pictures.

Never hold a tiger muskie (or any fish unless you keep it) suspended in a vertical position as this causes displacement of internal organs. Those organs and connective tissues are actually fairly elastic.

The most pronounced and long-lasting damage from vertical holds for a large fish occurs in ligaments, skeletal and muscular structures around and immediately behind head and gills including gill lamellae and rakers. Resulting in serious injury to fish’s respiratory system, mobility, and ability to forage for prey.

Now laying on the ice for a measurement like with any fish its cold plus you are potentially removing protective slime from the fish that can lead to skin infections later. Just saying. Same goes for shore fishing with any fish one will be releasing. Try to keep the fish off the ground and ice.

Again great catch and I'm sure experience but strongly recommend learning how to properly hold the fish in a horizontal position in a horizontal hold or tail grip hold.

Congrats as this species even though large and awesome need to be handled properly for the preservation of the species and you indicated you released. Good on you and hopefully the fish is okay. Yes just a fish but they are sterile and put in Utah bodies of water for a reason.

Just a little bit of proper fish holding education on my part regarding Tiger Muskies as I'm more than willing to help educate on this species were all other fish are just bait with pretty colors.SmileSmile

Education is NEVER a waist of time. However, how it is received can and IS in this case.
To call someone names for putting up important news is lacking in judgement big time.
Like the GUN issue these days. Not the gun, but the HUMAN is at error.
I am a moderator and was told to review this post. I see it as very educational on how to and NOT handle catch and release.
Choice is now yours. You can continue to handle the fish vertically and with boga and KEEP or feet the other fish, OR you can practice proper catch and release.
Or never post here again, so many choices, good hing we arre all adults and can do this.
Have a great day and catch lotsa big ones. Sorry if not the edit I was suppose to do.

We live in a day and age when people are overly sensitive...forums such as this are a great source of information for fishermen and outdoor enthusiasts and can also be great learning mediums as well. Sadly, though, too often educational posts are taken as an insult or too sensitively. K2muskie gave some valuable information and constructively criticized the OPs handling of a fish. Any fisherman who chooses not to do his part to protect a limited and valuable resource is no sportsman in my book. I suggest taking a couple deep breaths, Fuzzy, and seeing if you can learn a thing or two from another fisherman!

Oh ya, moderators are moderators. You yelled a lot for a moderator. Lots of capital letters for a moderator. Who you yelling at? Is a moderator an important position? Don't yell please.

Great questions slchillbilly so let me give you some more educational feedback.

I don't work for the DNR/DWR but I do volunteer my time helping them with this species. Volunteer time is tagging/fin ray clipping tiger muskies for National study, Helping with the Tiger Muskie Spawn at Lee Kay Hatchery, helping stock Tiger Muskies, Helping collect Pike from Yuba for the Tiger Muskie Brood stock program.

Additionally there are no true Muskies in Utah only ones they have are in rearing ponds at Lee Kay Hatchery. Just so you know. Utah has hybrids called Tiger Muskies a sterile fish and yes Utah gets them from other states but now they are rearing their own for the state at the Lee Kay Hatchery. So this post was the catching of a Tiger Muskie not pure strain Muskie.

A Tiger Muskie can occur naturally in the wild where Pike and Muskie co-exist. So here in Utah the DNR is I guess playing God as they are making them. As Utah has no body of water that contains both Pike and pure Muskie.

So what is a tiger muskie you're probably wondering slchillbilly--Its a hybrid 'sterile' fish with the temperament of both its parents a northern pike and pure Muskie.

Breeders prefer to breed male northern pike and female muskellunge because the eggs are less adhesive and have less tendency to clump when hatching.

While some tiger muskie occur naturally most are bred in hatcheries.
Tiger muskie usually grow more quickly than the pure-strain muskie and northern pike in the first several years. They can also endure high temperatures better than the parent fish and grow more quickly reaching legal size sooner, making them more useful in stocking.

Oh and so you know the difference with the various strains of muskies, a hybrid and Pike see the attached photo.

If you ever want any other information on this species by all means let me know I'm more than willing to help raise awareness and educate. Thanks for the awesome questions. I hope I give you the information you desire with your questions. SmileSmile

PS I've also attached photos of what boga grips can do when a fish thrashes. Figured you'd want to see that but didn't ask. BlushBlush

Well it looks like the same old BS is going on after a year or two of me not visiting. I got a little bit of crappy treatment over a trout I caught and that is why I don’t post fish or reports anymore. I just lurk mainly.

I’ve never caught a Muskie or pike or tiger. But I appreciate the info you provided and how to properly hold one in the event I catch one. Solid info and advice is never a bad thing especially when your intentions are good. Keep Providing solid info.

It is clear what the problem is here. You, my friend, are not able to read and comprehend a helpful, informative post when you see one. Many of your comments reveal a lack of kindness and understanding. I suggest you spend more time learning from our moderators who are very helpful and friendly. FlyGoddess is one of the best and most educated fishing experts on this site. Her post was well stated and only asked that we be civil to someone expressing an opinion. I am grateful for her desire to help this site be free of people who are not wanting to learn or be helpful.
Just my two cents.
