It was good to meet you Wiperhunter. Thanks to you and everyone else for their efforts, donatation etc. in putting on the Bash.

Two of us only ended up with one pup laker each. We fished in the bay south of Buckboard (South Buckboard). Three other groups in the same area also only caught pup lakers and one very small burbot.

We had a lot of fun. The w made it more challenging. I was very glad to have a good shelter and plenty of anchors holding it down.

Sorry to hear you had such a bad time but I hope the different demos and give-aways helped in some way and the information you gained will help you in future trips to the gorge for the ling. The Gorge is a tough place to fish when the wind is blowing hard and it is hard to predict a day when it isn't going to blow like that. We were lucky to hit it on fri with little to no wind but just a heads up when it comes to fishing the Gorge, if it is at all possible, try to fish at least two days for better odds of missing the wind. I know it is a long drive up to the Gorge for those of us that live in utah, that is why you really have to make the most of it. If you are able to go up for two days or more, fish those days and give it fair chance, there is a lot of good fishing for other fish beside ling. Please don't be discouraged by your lack of success on this trip, hopefully you will think of it as an learning experience and the next time it will be much better.

No worries wiperhunter. I'm a pretty crummy fisherman but I'm also too dumb to quit. I actually despise the entire state of Wyoming (not the people, just several bad experiences geographically) so it was big a leap for me anyway.

I had actually never been to the Gorge as an adult and I realized this weekend that it is huge and is a pretty cool place. I think I learned enough that it would be worth it to make a longer trip w/ the right people and equipment. If there are any good times to take the ling during the summer it would be easier to convince the wife to spend a week on the water. As is she laughed in my face when I suggested she might want to fish the ice with us.

I'm glad you feel that way and are willing to give it another chance. You can catch the ling in the summer as well, they still move into the shallow water to feed in the evening but you will need a boat or float tube for your best chance at them. There is some great fishing for the smallers macks and rainbows as well and a lot of places to camp that are free on the Wy side of the Gorge.

Good looking angler in that second photo.Unsure While fishing Saturday I decided to put my mack rod in the rod holder on my sled. I made the mistake of also putting the cover on the rod. This turned my sled into a sail boat. That sled took off across Flaming Gorge. I tried to catch up to it, but alas the wind was blowing much faster than I could walk, especially on slick ice with no cleats (which is a different story). Fortunately, there was one group of anglers out further on the ice than we were and a guy kindly run the sled down on his 4 wheeler. At that point, I had walked about 2 blocks. Had he not chased it down I would have had to hike all the way across FG (which I would guess is about 1 1/2 miles one way) and drag that sled back fighting the wind all the way.

Kent you always have the best stories, no matter if it is in your boat or on the ice. After watching that ice hut sail off over the ice, I'm surprised you took the chance but I know how it is with heine sightWink. I'm glad the guy was able to stop the flight of your sled before it sailed all the way to the other sideCrazy. I really thought Randy was going to lose his hut when he got out to chase his stowage bag. That wind was brutal. I'm sure glad that you guys were there this weekend, it sure increased our combined catch rate. Did you by chance ask that guy that tracked down your sled how the catching was way out there on the ice?

I would like to thank all involved for putting on the bash. I won an ice fishing backpack from BFT. We learned a lot and will do it again. After the bash we headed down to Holmes and fished there in what we guessed to be about 30' of water. We used the curly tail jigs that were giving to me at sign in. Between the two of us we ended up with 18 ling with numerous swings and misses and a few that never quite got hooked good enough. I don't know if it mattered but we hung a flashlight on the ceiling of our hut and with the wind blowing like it was gave the tent a disco feel. With the light bouncing all over the place and the wind blowing us around we called it a night just before 10, by then we were the only one's left on the ice. We didn't feel like dealing with the wind Sunday so we packed up and left. Thanks again

Thanks to everyone that came and supported the bash again this year. We fished Friday night 4 of us in 25 ft of water off a cliff and rocky point south buckboard, and managed 15 bots between 4 of us. Nothing to big but when they were biting they were in for about 30 mins. After that we decided to have some fun and socialize on the ice. Saturday we concentrated on Macs and ended up with a few pups that day. Everything from the bots to the macs were caught on a new pure glow Curlys Lure tipped with chub meat and RGT 3.5 glow. We didnt get to make it for a whole lot of the presentation due to the wind, and wanting to setup for the night early, but hope you all had a good experieince. Thanks to everyone that made this possible, BFT all the sponsers, and of course all the members of BFT.

I fished with baldassbat and his report says it all. I had a good time but looking at your pictures wiper, we were in the wrong terrain. We fished a more sandy/rocky hill. Wish there was a little more instruction ie: north or south for people like us who have never been. The DNR made it seem like they were everywhere but judging by most of the reports, It looks as though they are in more isolated areas.

Fishing is fishing though and every species take time to catch. I may consider next year if I can get up there and scope out some good spots. It is pretty difficult to get there at noon, find a spot (in a new area) and catch fish. Thanx for putting it together and I enjoyed myself and the experience.

I didnt exactly slay the burbot but I did catch 3 before calling it a day. that was down at holmes crossing. Caught 3 nice rainbows north of buck board earlier in the day smallest was 20 inches. of course it was the first one so I kept it. here a pic of it after I got home. Thanks agian for all the work you guys put into the 2010 burbot bash.

Had a great time at the bash. I actually got skunked, but still had a great time with friends. We had a group of three, and caught 3 burbot and 3 trout between Friday and Saturday. We went North from the marina a ways and fished against some rock cliffs in about 30ft of water.

We fished close to a pressure ridge that gave one hell of a pop while we were fishing, scared that you know what out of all of us.

Thanks for setting this up, cant wait for next year.

After I started hiking back with my sled I realized that I had not asked them how they were doing. Forgot to mention in my original post, but after I got back to where I was fishing I tied the sled to my power auger and went back to fishing. Just as I got back to my rods I saw my sled go shooting across the ice again dragging the power auger behind it! This time I was able to catch up to it on my own after it had drug the auger for about 30 feet. Then I got smart and took my power auger and almost drilled a hole through the ice and left the auger in the hole. Tied the sled to the auger again and it was finally staying put.

It was interesting talking to the Sweetwater dive team at the Bash, who did a presentation on ice safety. They do night time dives on the WY end of the reservoir. According to them, they see so many burbot sometimes it looks like the bottom is moving. They also see them hiding under rocks and ledges, probably waiting to ambush prey.

I definitely think habitat is the key- rocky points and drop-offs, but I also think avoiding spots that have been hit a ton of times helps. Sounds like those fishing further south did better. With exception to a few slaughters that were posted, the bite seemed slow overall. We fished Friday night and it was slower than the previous week for sure. A buddy of mine and his friends fished Saturday night and their party caught around 40. He said most of his fish came while actively jigging from hole to hole.

I forgot to thank Dubob for all his help with the sign up and drawing. Here are a few pictures of the folks that received some of the give-aways.

Yea, there is no doubt the wind had some effect but I think too many folks fished too close to buckboard. The buckboard area looked like swiss cheese with all the people fishing it latelyCrazy. The guys that got away from BB did the best. Of course a lot of these guys had never fished for them either, so that did not help. Maybe now that they learned a little and started paying their dues they will do better next time out, I sure hope so.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this happen, I had a blast. Me and my brother caught 3 burbots the first night fishing the second point north of Holmes crossing, not too bad for two hours of fishing and not being able to find a more suitable spot. The next day, we had the wife with us and headed to buckboard to see some of the festivities. After someone showed up with a cooler full of burbot, we got excited and decide to leave, to get a better spot and try and find some relief from that wind. After driving down several unmarked dirt roads, we decided we were fishing the next access point we came to. After taking my truck down some pretty hairy hills, it's only two wheel drive and I was more worried about making it back up. We found a spot in cove with a floating dock and an Island out in the main channel, we eyed a good point extending out into the main channel with a good rocky shallow bay on the other side. Manually drilled three holes through the 16+ inches, and set-up some rods and glow jigs, with carp meat soaked in Craw SJ. Got the shelter set up and tied down, I felt like I was securing a hot air balloon. After that, we sat in the shelter, drinking beer and taking turns going out to check the rods. The wife finally came down, but I could tell she was not going to last long.Unsure The fishing was fast in the shallower holes, but I did not want to move the shelter in the W. so we stayed put and tried to keep checking them as often as possible. Ended up catching 6 more burbots the biggest going 23" and 4 that were around 20". Headed in and back on Hwy 530 by 8:00, stayed at the Oak tree inn, nice place with good food close by. I will be back, even though my wife won't beLaugh. If anyone finds an aluminum avalanche shovel, on the east side of the gorge, it works great. Just keep it tied down out there, it took off like it had wheels, in that --- wind. The Maniac glow grubs I won, stuck three of the burbs and the biggest. I am excited to try the sample grubs I got from Jim, they look awesome.

...first pic is of the Maniac grub, second is the sample jigs I got from Jim, and the third is the largest burbot, with about 10 crawdads in his stomach.

dont feel bad i walk every were on this lake it keep's me in shape for the shed hunting season Iam going to work on a post with pics and the type of structer to look for this week then maybe we can just look at it when we all have questions?the biggest thing is the longer the ice is on the more in the spawn they get so north they are in full spawn south a little less spawner's from what i have found \ling spawn from dec-apr so depends what end of the lake you fish and the spawning activity for what depths and such you should fish. had a buddy fishing in 4ft of water and watching ball's of ling come throw so shallow when spawning deeper on pre and post spawn fish.just geting away from group's of people will help we didnt have any one with in a mile of ither side of us and it once again look's like we did better than mos?the reason i think most stayed at bucky was they are flat lazy....... want fish to just jump in there bucket....
