Don't know what body of water you caught it out of. It is a sucker of some sort, again depending on where it was caught.

If it came out of Utah Lake in Utah, it could be the infamous, endangered June Sucker. Any where else in the Intermountain area, just a plain old Mt. Sucker.

If you are in the Midwest, South, or East, then it is one of many different suckers that reside there !!!

Golden Redhorse, maybe,I'm not sure, nice catch though, congrats. You caught the unexpected! possibly an invasive species,or a golden siamese algae eater,I believe its clearly a type of suckerfish.

ive caught a few of these myself... the river in PA, it wouldnt happen to be the allegany river, would it?.. i caught one of these i measured out to 27 inches long... it was HUGE and put up an awesome fight

it is definitely a "sucker"... most likely the "white sucker" as stated before... one i caught was a red horse though

they are fun to catch though.. and i think maybe i need to find myself a waterproof book to take with me when i go fishing... because sometimes i run into something i have seen before and ask myself... "umm, huh?"

actually.. i dont think thats a white sucker at all.. the colors dont match right... its still a sucker of some short.. the shape of the head would suggest part of the redhorse family of suckers, but with the anal fin underneath and the tail collapsed its hard to tell specifically which one

The same creek that i have caught this sucker on has herds of carps. I have tryed using numerous baits to catch them but they wont bite. I can see that they come up to smell the bait and then keep going. The creek I am fishing on is called 'Ridley Creek" in Media PA. I have used: Corn, Potato, Dough with egg, String beans, apple, special carp bait 5 different flavors, worms(night crawlers), bugs, as well as some kind of red mass carp bait. Nothing works!!!!Can anyone tell me how i can finally get this creatures out of the water please! They are huge! Up to 4 feet. Help Please!!!!I have to get em.

It's a great looking fish, I'd have to go with a White Carp too. Does P.A. let you use goldfish as bait, I know some states do and although I've never used them or lived in a state that always them, I do know some anglers who have caught MONSTER CATS and HUGE CARP on live gold fish. Might be worth a shot for the ones that aren't biting.

these are definitely not carp, the angle of the mouth is wrong and the dorsal fin is too short.. this is definitely a sucker fish, most likely of the redhorse variety...

to catch these things they eat the same food as carp.. and are very similar to catch as carp are.. what i found works best for me is a dough bait made from corn meal with some vanilla extract added..

keep in mind these fish take bait off the bottom of the river.. so you have to add enough sinkers a few inches from the bait to keep it on the bottom and thats usually when theyll come by and suck the hook in.... i caught a redhorse a couple years ago that i measured at 27 inches and he put up one hell of a fight

As for catching those big carp you speak of,they are really smart,I think they see your line, could be thats why they swim away.

Thinner line should do,try 6lb and see how they react,if not go to 4lb. look for signs on what they're feeding on, possible berry trees?,I heard plain white bread.I've caught them on berry clusters.Good Luck. P.S. Is this what your after.....

no.. theyre not smart at all, ive caught these.. plenty of these with regular monofilament and braided alike.. they swim down the stream and suck up anything that smells edible, dont even look for the most part...

so like i said.. sink your bait to the bottom, and they seem to like the smell of vanilla, so use that in your dough bait

This is a photo of a whitehorse sucker, it took second place in the largest caught for that species the year it was caught 2004. "they get twice this big"

This next one is a redhorse sucker
it has a golden redish tint to it scales.
this one was also caught by me in 2004
Redhorse suckers dont start running till the middle to the end of may sometimes they run through the end of july.

now as for them pesky carp, smart you ask? NO, just extreemly skiddish and easily spooked.

they like sweets, do make your doghball out of cerial of some kind. raisen bran with out the rasins or shredded wheat works well, dip a hand full in the watter and mash it till it becomes a dogh ball, then from it on the hook, cast out in to a hole and stake your pole well and loosen the drag so the carp can run with the line.

use 12-15lb test line and lots of it. reel-um in and they will run again, repeat the process till the carp stops running out. I have gotten as much as 8-10 runs out of a single carp.

This is a white Drum, sometimes called White Carp

and this one is a common carp

hope these photo help you to see the differances in the species.
