Thanks Lynn I appreciate that, but it's a lot of fun to be involved with, we need to thank Craig. He is our prize master and doing an excellent job of working with sponsors and getting us some prizes... In fact whenever anyone is in to stores like Sportsmans Warehouse, Anglers Inn, CAL Ranch, Maniac Lures, Blackstone Grills, please thank them for their sponsorship over the years... I've forgotten some so I'm terrible at this part of the job, but we have had a bunch of great sponsors that make this contest possible without charging an entry fee... So please thank them, the managers especially of the stores... That would be the best way to thank us... It makes our job so much easier... Good luck Lynn, I'm sure it will be your year... Ahi will have to earn it this year... Boy are you ready for this job to begin? Seems like some of you catter's work harder at the contest than a full time job... Well I'm sure with the cold temps we will ease into the contest, but come May - June I know it will get really busy... That's when it will get really fun.... Later Jeff

I put more effort into this than I do my own house work and repairs since I dont have a job, my kids are my full time job. Ive got a new boat, 2 new rods, new tackle, had back surgery and I think Im pretty well recovered from that. Im not sure what else I can do to prepare for a banter year of catfishing. I need to beat my last year scores, heck I got to beat my son who whooped me. So I dont need a 36"er Ill take a 32"er and be happerTongue

Okay got a crazy idea, like usual, what if we tried to put together a catfish contest video this year??? While you're out fishing for cats pull out your video camera and show your crew fishing on landing a few monster kitties. Then submit some of your best footage and we will see if we can find ourselves a video wizard that can produce a BFT Catfish contest video that we'll put on YouTube for all to enjoy... May do several of these throughout the contest as updates on the action... Let's see how this works... Now a call for a video wizard, anyone out there like to do videos? If so please contact me and let's see what we can do... Thanks Jeff

I think that is a great idea Jeff and Ill do my best to support it. One disclaimer though, I may falter trying to remember one more thing to do when a big cat is coming aboardWink

As I know you recall, I tend to get a bit of cat fever and forget important things like Logos in the pictureTongue

You will have to settle for smart phone video though. I haven't had a video camera since the cays of "VHS-C" if you can remember that!

Hey Jim, yup I don't know how good the video's will be on solo trips and I'm with you on the phone videos, but maybe when we go with others we can film them or we can video our set ups or something like that, we can take some of these snibets and put the info together and see what it turns into.. I think it might be fun to see and we may just start a cat channel with weekly news reels... I'm just hoping we can find a member to step up with good editing skills that can make a cool finished product... Be cool if we did this as a weekly catcontest update... See what we can do... I'm in. I usually have an extra hand on board that could film. Maybe I can trade my old Brownie black and white in for one of those fancy Go Pro outfits. They say even a low-tech person like me can run one of those.Unsure

Try Groupon. Im going to buy an action camera off there, its like a GoPro but its only $50 instead of 300-500. They have one that has a wrist band you can activate camera with. I got one for Devon, my son and its awesome. They have a kit with it, includes waterproof case. Oh it has 1080 and 4K recording as well. Any questions just ask.

Hey Craig the leader board isn't up yet, I'll get it going when we start to get some results, but I am using the same old spreadsheet to keep things straight...

You know why there is less than half as many north as south don't you? It's not that hard to beat you (as long as John is on our team).... zinggggg Just don't leave it up to me to try to lead the charge though....

Should be a fun year and no doubt you guys will do well this year... I think the south is more than twice as motivated as the north so far... Hopefully team north will show up when it's crunch time... But the ice is just ready to clear up here... I think today was the last day I dare get on the Benson ice... My spud bar would go through in four hits so it's not very strong and it crumbles really easy... So maybe in a couple weeks we'll start to think about catfish... Good luck tomorrow and be careful... Hey Jeff, I'm still working on my new bump board. But I found a really nice Swanson Metal 48" ruler about 2" wide. Bright yellow, large black numbers. Gonna keep that one on the boat. Takes up lot less space.
New bump board: I've borrowed an idea I got from John. Wanted to have a larger filleting board to take to the river in my truck. Was initially intended just as something to cut up carp for bait without getting blood all over the tail gate. But it kinda morphed into something I hope to have multi task abilities. Took a clip off of an old cracked plastic fillet board I had. Bolted it to a piece of particle board I had in the shed about 40" long by 18" wide. Then put 4 very thick coats of exterior enamel on it to seal the wood. Have added 2 36" adhesive backed fish tapes bought at Sportsman's, one on each edge. I have been coating the whole board with spray on quick dry polyurethane, got about 12 coats on it as of last night. Soon as I can get some decent outside light in the afternoon, I'll get some photos to send ya for blessing.

What's your guess??

So... as I sit and stare out the window at falling snow, ravaged by the cravings of cataholicism, I ponder this years contest. Who will walk off with the top cat? Will the north prevail again or will the south rise from the depths of two years of defeat?

Heres my guess: I see Ahi being very tough to beat as he seems to have the bigguns dialed in. Also, there are some tough catters on the north team who have been rather quiet for the past couple of years. Tough competition up that way.

For the south, the top catter appears to be Ice-Sled but he has some pretty good back up catters to help the south hit a new high. We have a good supply of new participants in the south and among them probably lies a supper-catter. Time will tell. Best of all for the south is that it appears we will have enough water so get us through the entire contest. Yeah!!

If memory serves, the top cat since the annual contest began is a 33 incher?? I believe this year will produce the first cat over 35 inches; lots of participants, good water levels, and an abundance of cataholics, with good weather not too far away.

So whats your guess for top catter and biggest fish his year??

Best of luck to all and lets have some fun!

I like your optimism! I thought about that a bit last year and I'm with you, I think somebody is due for one of the really big ones. In the 10 years since I moved back to UT, I have see 2 UL cats get publicity, like the local paper. One was about 22 pounds and was reportedly caught somewhere in Mud Lake. The other was 17, I think and 37 inches long. The "spot" was not revealed, but the background showed rip rap like the dikes on most of the harbors have. I seem to recall the last one was very early in the season, like March or early April.

I know that there are good catter's that don't go public, but I think it is about time someone in the contest got one like that.

There is also a relatively untapped resource for the south team at Lake Powell. Last time I looked the lake record there was 24 lbs. Most people there catch cats on dinner scraps off the back of their houseboats and I don't think there is much real cat hunting down there. I hope to find out in early May, as a friend and I are planning to chase crappie and walleye.

I'm thinking it's gonna be a big year for someone. I hope it's team south!

I just checked some things from last year. By the end of March there were 23 cats entered plus two little ones by Ahi and SkunkedAgain. They also led the contest. Ahi had the longest a 29.5" followed by SkunkedAgain and Pisco who had 29"ers. Ice_man had three on the board and was in third place BLK was right between ice_sled and Pisco with a 27 and a 26. Interestingly the teams were tied at 260.5 each at that point. If I were a betting man I would put my money on one of those guys to catch the big one or win the contest this year. I just wanted to show what could be done in March if you went for it. Of course there are some stars up north that will give them a real run for their money but they started in later last year so they don't show up in March. Heck, I didn't even join BFT until April 9 and caught my first cats on May 16. Getting an earlier start this year and expect to do well (for me) again.

Hey Lynn, I want to guess too... I'd say it's going to be really hard to beat the guys that have time to get out often... Therefore, I think you and John are towards the tops of my list of who could do it again... As far as size goes, as many fish over 30" that John pulled in, now I don't know if he kept or released them, but if he put them back, I'd say he has a good chance of breaking the 33" contest record by bottomwatcher... There was a good bunch of big fish there in the lower Bear last year, so I'd suspect the North's biggest fish will come from there... I don't expect many will catch fish over 32", but I do think it is possible and I bet that the big one will come from a relatively unknown catter out for a once or twice a year trip... Just my guess... but seems like lightning strikes the unexpected... I think most of us will have a hard time breaking the 30" mark as usual but hopefully a few more of us will reach that level this year... I was happy to see Derek do it last year... I keep hoping to get one of those during the contest period myself... I think that really big class of 12"ers in Cutler last year will hopefully be big enough to get ahold of the hook this year, so there will be less frustration with missed hits, but expect they won't be over 16" so probably not good cookie cutters yet, but starting to get interesting... And last of all I hear rumors of Cutler being drained this fall, so those that fish Cutler will need to make plans for that in the tail end of the contest... Later Jeff

Well I think there's a pretty good chance you'll continue to do well knowing you put that many tanks back in the pond... Be fun if a guy could tatoo or stamp a fish so you knew if you caught it before.. I got a couple over the years that I really wondered if I had caught them before...One had a weird yellow stripe into the green on its back... I got it at 23" and I'm about sure it was the same fish the next year around 25"... But most of them are hard to figure out how to identify them... I'd like to catch my 29's from last year again this year... They were fat tanks and so I'll bet they grew well over the year... I know they won't beat yours, but they might get me over 30".... I got a big ole one eye 29.5" after the contest ended a couple years ago that had a big gash in its back... I'd bet I could tell that fish if I caught it again... Got a tank bass that was one eyed there too... Funny you really don't catch the same fish very often though... Maybe they get smarter and don't bite a hook again.... Good luck John... Oh I got your dog tag for the trophy back... I need to get it to you sometime... I don't think it looks the same as the others, but it looks really nice... Be a cool trophy, maybe you could post a picture of that so everyone can see what the prize is for the top catter... If they can take it away from you... That will be tough to do... Thanks John... It's sure a different year than last year... I was catching crawlers and channels this time last year... Looked for crawlers today and there's nothing showing at all, and the sloughs I fished are still covered with ice, so I'm not even wasting my time yet... but it won't be too long, little sunshine and some luck, we'll be in business... So you going to reclaim your trophy this year? They are catching some seriously small cats to win that one... Later Jeff

P.S. Ooh, ooh, I just thought of something. Maybe I could make something up about you up north being scaredy cats with your tails between your legs but I'm too tired to figure one out right now.

It has been really tough. We still having 20 degree night time temps. Gave it a try today. Not even a nibble. Using carp minnows I caught last fall at Benson. Might be they want some nice fresh carp meat, but I cant even find any of them.

Really want to hit it Friday but Truck needs to go to the shop . I will see you Saturday for sure.

Yesterday afternoon I was heading up to a meeting and the ice is starting to melt off that slough by the Benson church and around the edges of the ice just west (and a little south) of the church there were a bunch of carp, I think, thrashing around, had me interested in trying, but I had a water meeting I had to attend.. Always seems like fresh bait does so much better than the freezer burned stuff I've got left over from last year... Won't be too much longer for me.... Ice challenge ending today, I'll be switching over my attention after this weekend... Later J

John it's official, you got the first 30" fish of the contest this year... Nice job... and I agree with you us northerners need to get out and help you out, we can't leave all the heavy lifting to you alone... Part of the reason for the 10 fish team is so one person can't carry the whole thing... I'll try to get out and see if I can find some channels next time... Don't think my mudders did much to help us out.... Well it did one day before the southern press of nice fish yesterday, but I need to get them bumped soon... Hope I can find some good ones before it chills off too much and shuts them back down... I'll do what I can... Later J

Sorry I'm doing taxes this week, so I won't make it out till the weekend, but I should be able to bump that 25 off of mine so we got a chance for a come back... I foresee lots of back and forth coming in the next few weeks... Last year both teams averaged over 30" so were both 2" shy each on the team averages, so we have room to grow... You know it used to be a 27 might make it in the top ten until towards the end of the contest... but lately the 30"ers have been getting bumped out... So I guess we both need to find bigger fish if we want to stay in the top 10... I think the efforts are increasing in this contest and making it pretty tough to be part of the top ten... maybe in the future we may want to go to a top 20 to involve more team members... Just a thought... Later J

I like your idea. As it stands now a person might as well not post anything less than a 29 or 30"er if they want to be a part of the final 10. I enjoy the journey as much as the destination but it would be more fun to feel like I was contributing along the way to the team score rather than having it concentrated on a few individuals alone. As it stands we only need 4 people per team to fill up the 10 spots. I know it gets distributed around more than that, but still. I remember from my research of past years' contests that at one time you kept a score of total inches. That would give the south an advantage as we have about twice as many participants as the north does. I don't want to suggest putting more work on you, but that might be fun to do again.

Craig, maybe we can do this as a trial year and have both a top 10 for all the marbles this year and a top 20 to see how everyone likes that option... The top 20 will be more applicable to the end of the contests and the top 10 for the first half... Since they don't really matter until they are filled... And i think I can do the total inches without too much stess... I'll see what I can do... top 20 will be more difficult than total but I'll see how it goes... Later Jeff

Thanks Ben. I would like more folks to stay interested and keep entering fish. Its sad if by the first of April folks get discouraged and dont enter anything. This will require at least 7 on each team to enter fish. So that takes a good group. Usually it will be spread a lot further than that too. So well see how this goes. Thanks Jeff

Jeff, cold and damp I can sometimes deal with. But the wife likes to fish too, but not into being uncomfortable doing it.
Things I really dislike are high winds and poring rain when I'm in the boat, or poring rain anytime.
I wouldn't mind if it would just stop the back and forth from cold and wet, to almost enjoyable warm and dry, to snow, to cold and dry, to rain again.
Much easier for you up the on the back side of Benson. I have to drive about 35-40 miles to get to the BRBR, where the bigger Cats are. Sometimes the weather does a complete 180 change from fair to terrible just in the time and distance from the house to the river.
And of course, getting the time to hit the water can many times be a problem....fishable weather when I'm working, and bad to terrible weather when I'm off. Hopefully that will get more settled down soon.

So I went online to see what I could learn. I looked at a hunting map of the refuge and, lo and behold, I saw Forest Street everywhere! If I had a street named after me I would fish there, too. Then I turned to a fishing site. Wow, it was me holding a couple of fish, huge ones, too. It must have been a photo from the future or of a doppelganger. If it is a picture from the future it looks about right. While John catches the 30+ inchers I would probably catch the 13 inchers.

Well I couldn't make em bite over the weekend, but only tried them Friday night in one of my low yield locations... Should have tried a different spot but I didn't have enough time to get there... Was also using carp minnows instead of cut bait and I don't seem to do as well with them... So how do you get carp to bite... man they are tough to find, when you need to catch them for bait... guess I better start fishing with crawlers again so I can pick up a few... This weather this spring is crazy, seems like we can't get a break from weather fronts long enough to get the fish to get consistent... Hopefully we will before too long... Later J

Thanks Ben, I'll have to try that again... Didn't have much luck last time I tried it, but it wasn't this time of year, so maybe it will be just the ticket now... Got one on crawlers last night, so I've got a couple days of bait again... Funny how fast I can go through a carp these days... Starting to get fairly good at filleting those carp, but when you're not too worried about wasting meat it gets much easier to do... My cats love it when I leave them something besides bones and scales to eat.. I probably ought to get a set line permit and see if I can stock up on carp while they are in the shallows spawning... I broke my bow string and so I don't get out sticking them like I used to... but I do need to get bait this time of year, because they get a lot harder to catch later in the year... Thanks so much for the tip, I'll give it a try... Later Jeff

I know I was expecting more when the forbidden bait was made legal... But I don't ever stick with it very long either, if I'm not catching anything on it, I'll change to what I know I'll catch something on... guess I need more faith in it... Later Jeff

When I go to the river or to Benson hoping for Cats, I always take a tub of worms. I'll put out one line with cut carp, one with a worm. If I hook a carp and manage to land it, then I change over carp to both lines. That's how I was able to get my first 2 carp a couple weeks ago. All I had was worms, caught 2 carp, cut one up and fish with it. Then the next weekend my wife hooks on a smallish chunk of MY carp on a #4 bait hook, walks across the road drops her line in and scores a 25 inch Cat.
Well, I'm taking 8 hours of my award time tomorrow and going back to the river. I know the weather has been bad the past couple days, and not due to improve much, but I'll put out my cut bait, and sit in my truck if its raining. Maybe I'll take a book to read. ........Unsure

I don't know if any of you have experienced this, but my catch rates have been much better with sucker meat than with carp. I have fished them side by side and the sucker meat has outfished the carp every time. The last 2 suckers had egg sacks in them, so I saved them and tried fishing with them on the lower Bear yesterday with great success. Caught 4 of the 5 cats on the eggs with the biggest at 25.5". So just a thought to try when cutting up those fish for bait. All my big cats so far this year have been on sucker meat.

Jig-- Interesting that you had good luck with sucker meat. I fish almost exclusively at Utah Lake and they kinda frown on (as in illegal) using any kind sucker meat. I have used chubs with good success and I wonder how they would compare to using sucker meat. Seems like both fish are kind of oily almost like anchovies. Catfish are not known for their discriminating cuisine so I'm sure both suckers and chubs would ketch 'em.

My go-to bait of choice is fresh... as in still bloody, carp meat, with a fresh white bass head a close second. I have a freezer full of minnows, chubs, carp, and white bass and I use them all but I still think nothing beats fresh bait.

Whatever works, I guess.

Please...some warm weather.

I believe fresh is best as well. It does seem to make a difference. I know some people have preferences as far as skin on vs. off. I have caught fish both ways, but usually with carp I like to scale them but leave the skin on. It stays on the hook better that way. With sucker, they have smaller scales and I just leave the scales on. It would be interesting to hear from others what they prefer.

I've done many tests on Cutler reservoir, the Bear river, and the Snake river in many different places and in many different conditions fishing sucker side by side with carp, chubs, redside shiners, and worms. The most consistent cutbait I have found after many years of doing this is the sucker meat. All of the others catch channel cats too obviously, but for me the sucker does consistently better than the others most times. There are days when for some reason the carp or chubs works better, but not often. Actually, if I were to reverse the rankings and go least effective bait/cutbait for channel cats to most effective it would be....

Least to most effective

1-Red side shiners
2-worms (most effective for mudcats and carp!)
3- shrimp
4-carp
5-whole or cut chubs (good 2nd choice bait)
6- cut, fresh sucker....best in my opinion.

Any of these work well for channel cats, but I try to be most efficient with my fishing time. If I don't have sucker then I'm confident with the others to produce a fish or three.

I have tried dip baits, punch baits, stink baits, liver, etc. and it seems to be good for SMALL channel cats, but very ineffective for large channel cats. Large channel cats are top level predators and want fresh meat. I've caught them with big mice and baby ducks in their stomachs and once at Newton reservoir I found one that was 29" washed up on shore in the process of dying with a 9" crappie stuck in its throat! I have noticed my catch rates decrease when using funky cutbait.

Just remember that even a blind squirrel will occasionally find a nut, but I don't want to hamstring my fishing opportunities fishing with blind squirrels....if you get my drift, haha!

Mike

I know most of you that use suckers, probably get them from a lake or pond or other body of water somewhere. But is there any place that may sell them? In the Davis, Weber, Box Elder Counties ?

A couple years ago I bought sucker fillets at Angler's Den in Roy but haven't been in there since then.
Might check Smith and Edwards I have seen a big bait freezer but haven't taken the time to see what's in it.

Bear Lake has some that can be caught along the east side or off the marina at times... I seen some in Heber in a freezer at the gas station as I was heading to strawberry... Other than that I don't know what to tell you Forest... Sorry I'm not a very good help... J

I've heard rumors that they run up the Provo river around June. Maybe that's not a good place to get them thoughWink

I mention it because there are probably less "protected" waters where they congregate to spawn about the same time of year.

Hey ya'll, thanks for the replies. I stopped in Sportsman's on Riverdale today. They have Chub and Sucker meat vacuum packed in a freezer. I know it may not be as good as fresh caught, but it's where I can get it. If it works, it will be worth the price. If not, well then I don't have to buy anymore...Wink Fishin'

What is the best bait to use for suckers? When I fish the Snake here in Blackfoot, I catch suckers on worms when I'm trout fishing. But when I want a sucker I can't seem to catch them. Does anyone have a good sucker bait?

I've caught most of mine on worms. Although I size them down and only use half a night crawler or less. I catch them on a garden worms (so I call them, I think they are angle worms) dug out of the garden, smaller than night crawlers, and catch them more often than with crawlers. I also use a smaller hook. I've caught them nymphing on my fly rod, with grasshoppers in the summer, and when a stonefly hatch is on, I've put a live one on the hook and caught them as well. I've caught them on wooly buggers during their spawn up at bear lake when they come near the shore. They can be extremely picky and not even touch a bait nearly tight under their nose. The best time to get them is during the spawn around the first part of June.

Looks like I have hit that wall Ice sled was taking about in the other thread. When finding a bumper fish is impossible. caught a 30 inch today. Wish it was a 25 inch at least I could have kept that for the smoker.

I had a work meeting today in Salt Lake. I knew I would have a little time after the meeting. I threw in my stuff, took a packet of frozen carp out of the freezer. I looked up on Google earth to try to identify a spot to fish on the lower part of the Jordan river. Found one I thought might hold fish and got bit...

I don't remember seeing fish from the Jordan river entered into the contest. Sorry you southern boys, I poached a fish from your area to add to my contest total.BlushWink Thank You!

Hey Jeff, this may be a bit late with you getting ready for the Flotilla tomorrow, but I think I finally got a camera that will take good Cat Contest shots, get the whole board and fish in, and not blur when it is enlarged. Check out the 2 attached new photos.

One of my new (this year) bump board, and one of the plain 48 inch metal rule I carry on the boat cuz the board takes too much room.

Tried before work yesterday, hoping maybe fishing in the dark or early light might bring a bump fish. Fishing was good with some very nice fish caught, but as Ahi and Ice_Sled have said, it gets tough to get one to better the score. Got a 29", a 26", a 25" and a 24". The females are just swollen right now and the 26" fought harder than the 29" male.

Just a caution to those headed to the lower Bear, BRING THE BUG SPRAY!!! Holy smokes, the skeeters are out, swarming, and hungry!

Saw Ahi as I was leaving, how did you do John?

I caught some fresh bait on my lunch break today. So I gave myself 1 hour after work to try and catch something before I had to head home. I wish I could have stayed longer. 1st fish went 30" and I thought great, a bumper fish. Big nasty-headed male cat. But just a little while later upriver from where I caught the 1st, I got a 30.5". This was a big beautiful lady cat, heavy and thick. I left just after catching her and spent a total of 50 minutes on the river.

Hey John, hope you get feeling better. Wife asked me Sunday if I had seen you last weekend. I told her I thought maybe I saw you parked back up that narrow gravel road on the north side of the road one day last weekend, but not sure.
Yea, I finally got up out of the Catfish basement, and the wife doubled her score with one Sunday.

I got a 4 day weekend coming this Friday, going back to the river. I'll sit in the truck if the weather is still wet and windy, but I did pretty good like that last weekend.
And I met jig-fisher while we were sitting in the truck at the boat ramp.
I see he just shaded up past you by a point. Gonna get tougher to get bump size Cats, but maybe I can get up close to you 2 guys score. I'm at the highest score I've had in 5 years of fishing this contest.

Hope to see ya out at the Bear this weekend.

Craig, you are only 2 points off my score. This is the best total Cat score I've had. But about now is where it starts getting more difficult to bump my score. I still have some upward mobility possible, but seems like that 85 to 90 point ceiling gets tougher every day. I would be happy to make it to the 90 point mark, and be up in that rarified air of the 2 leaders, but I think I would have to swipe one or two of John's or Paul's 32 inchers when they weren't looking..... Yes, Ben told me last year that getting to 80 was good but that it gets really hard as you try to get up to 90. My goal this year is 88, which is above last year's 86.5. I owe most of last year's success to our trimvirate--ice_sled, BLK, and Pisco--for taking me out fishing with them.

Then there are several just below who could do big bumps at any time. We got to keep on keeping on because it ain't over till it's over or something like that. Good luck to you, too. This comment thread has been pretty quiet last week or so. I hope it's because the southern team has been doing as poorly as I have...............Mad.

Seems like the Cat bite at the river got switched off. Have caught a few more carp, and saw a boat with 2 guys in it last Sunday on the Bear that had boated a nice walleye. I think they may have caught another one while we were anchored about 40 yards away at one of the irrigation gates.
I know John hasn't been on the river as often as normal. He's had his truck in the shop.

I have been to Willard 5 times this year, and skunked 5 times. I think I am gonna try to make it an even half dozen and get up there again Saturday. Unsure

I'm pretty sure the kitties have love on their mind right now on the river and aren't hanging in the usual spots. I tried yesterday late afternoon and only caught 2, a 24" and a 23". While there I had cats break the surface twice in water that is about 15 ft deep chasing each other around. Lots of structure in that area that spawning cats would be attracted to. One big dark male came clear out of the water like a porpoise. I did manage a 29.5 the end of last week in the same spot as the 2 I caught yesterday that went 10 lb 11 oz. I finally bought a digital scale. In another thread Catchinon posted a scale of length and approximate weights of cats. That chart was almost dead on showing that a 29.5 inch fish should weight 10.5 lbs.

In a couple of weeks I think the cats will start moving back into their former haunts and should be hungry.
