Standings 2019 Cat Contest
Hey everyone I know some of you crazies are watching for this to show up, so here it is... After the first most of a week, the north starts off with a fairly size able lead.. 125.5 to 0.... Probably the biggest lead of the contest, but who knows it might get bigger... After this opening round kfisher is currently number one with 72.5 points with Ahi close on his heals at 53 points and with the current biggest fish at 29"... Must admit I didn't think the north would start off with the lead, you two are rock stars in my book... nice job!!! Team south I expect you to come roaring back and take the lead... Be safe, careful and have fun everyone... Later J

Thanks for the update, I think! I think for the south team to come roaring back and take the lead, I know how to do it, but I can't get to Powell right nowWink. Forecast closer to home looks a bit daunting for a while.

Since ice fishing in the next couple of days looks pretty bleak, I thought I might go to one of the harbors and give it a try. Then if it gets too miserable home is only 20 minutes away. Catfishing isn't for wimps. Remember July when the only precipitation was the sweat dropping from your brow into your eyes?

Time for an update, we have a new leader... TubeDude moved into first place, however, team north still leads the overall team score, but not by average fish size, the south has that statistic in their favor... one more fish makes the difference at this point... Well great time to make your teams top ten fish, and I'm sure that will be a great item to put on your resume, so get out there and catch one for the team... Have fun all... J

Well you knew John wouldn't stand for being out of first place very long... So Ahi's back on top and he also kept team north in the lead... But the south still has the biggest per fish average size... Here's the specs...

How about an update after the big day out for team south yesterday, they took the team lead.... However, Ahi wouldn't let them steal all the thunder, so he went out and nailed the first 30"er of the year... John is still holding down the top score, although Lynn is keeping him on his toes... Team south is spanking the north on per fish average length, mostly because of that looser SkunkedAgain that posted 3 mud cats.... So team north get out and erase those three Minnie's off the team score... Here's the numbers... J

Well okay if you want to see how bad your kicking our back sides I'll put up some new numbers...At this point team south has their full ten fish in the count and so you'll need to bump the smallest (23") to get a fish in the top ten of the south now... Team north is still short one, and a lot of size.... See below... Pisco filled the bracket and it contains a lot of big fish so far... So the north has to get busy to do some catching up... Here you go, minus your fish, I haven't seen the post yet... Later J

Ok, here is the update as of 3-24, if I've missed some of your fish or made a mistake, please PM me and I'll try to get it fixed...

Now for the fun Part...... Ben, (IceSled) yes team south now has the biggest fish on the board... 30.5" officially, but it was even bigger than that, almost 31" and fat as can be... Great job Ben...

John still leads the whole contest as usual and is just verily short of the 90 point mark that few cross each year... Probably one of the fastest times to that mark that I remember...

Team south leads the team competition by a whopping 4" per fish, or 40 points.... That's a lot in this competition, but the ice just cleared up north, so hang on boys, the north is ready to start retaliating... May the best team win... Now is when things will start to get fun and wild, watch out for a crazy April and May...

Here is the results as I have them... let me know if I've missed something... Later J

Just a little mid-week update on the team scores... North has cut the lead to 27" but the standings are all basically the same otherwise... Team north could use a few bigger fish on the board to help make this a competition... It should be getting better everyday now... Good luck... J

Okay Craig and I were talking, which is dangerous, but we started kicking around a top 20 fish deal, so more folks scores are important towards the team doing well... This way the team needs a good bench as well as the starting team... So I started crunching some numbers along with a total inches caught and scored for each team... Look at this update and let me know what you think? Reply to the discussion post if you don't mind... We'll try to keep this post more about current standings... Jig-fisher restored the North's lead with a solid outing yesterday... What did I say about heading for the back and forth season of the contest???? North is now ahead by 4 points and the average size is getting pretty high now... I think the north needs at least 26.5 to enter the top ten and south needs 27.5" to get a fish in the top ten.. So it's good we have the top 20 going now, so the rest of us can have a fish on the charts... By-the-way all indicators are the same now, but I don't expect them to stay that way... Here's the new numbers... J

Oh one note on the top 20 above, north has one more fish (16) verses (15) fish for the south... so this one will flip easily with a fish over a mudcat length.. for the south...

Like I was saying team work, on the top 20 will make it necessary for more of the team to participate to keep your team ahead on the top 20 scores... I expect with a little nice weather more catters will get out and the top 20 will fill and then we'll see a lot more of you having fish in the top 20... Be fun to see how this scatters... Good luck... J

With the tiniest bit of rounding South has a 1" advantage when you average for the top 20, (which is now only 15 and 16 respectively): 25.96875 vs. 27.0666... Like you said, let's see what happens as we fill up the top 20 spots. Justin and Nancy have each just posted a fish for their team, so we're almost there. Looking at last year, it took fish from just 5 contestants to fill the top 10 spots while this year it will take 7 to fill the top 20. But what I really like is that absolutely everybody that posts a fish will have it count in the total-inches calculations. And it will be fun to see the average for those because the South will end up with a lot more total fish than the North. No brag, just fact Angelic. Jeff, I emphatically vote for the new calculations and hope we can formalize them for next year. I feel like this makes the contest more fun for everyone and that's the point, right?

From what I could find here is the current updated scores... Lots of things happened so if I have missed your fish please let me know and I'll get them scored on updated on the charts... When they come one at a time I do okay keeping up, but ten at a time I have a big chance to goof... so sorry if I did, let know and I'll fix it...

But if I am correct, which I think I am... Team North is still on top with Ahi leading the charge... Ben has the biggest fish by a half inch... Josh just put a contender for the little cat on the board... Team north has the top 20 lead, but team south is still 4 fish short of a full 20... I expect when they fill the 20, they should take that lead, but who knows maybe the north will bump a few cats off the list and be competitive with them by then..
Interesting how the north seems to be entering all their fish and I think the south is only entering fish over 25..

Jim, you need to get with Carolina and get those fish entered, might put the south a head on the 20... Here's the charts for now... Later J

Jeff, I am confused. When you figure the average fish size for each person, and they only have 1 fish on the board, shouldn't their average be the size of that 1 fish ?
On TinCansMate you scored her 25", and that is her only fish. But her average is shown as 8.33" (like it was divided by 3)
Yet Mooseman76 has only 1 fish scored for 27.5" and his average shows 27.5".
And Fishguybri also has just 1 fish scored at 20.5" and his average shows 20.5"
And 2 others only have 1 fish scored and their average is that same number.

Monday morning update.... Sorry I didn't have my file to update over the weekend... But we had some movement over the weekend... We have a new biggest fish in the contest at 32" for Mr. Jigfisher... who is also putting a little pressure on Ahi at a half inch behind.... Ben rolled in another 30" fish to put him very close behind the leaders... Sharksugar is right in the hunt as well... Little NASCAR jockeying for the lead going on right now... Funnest part of the season to me, when so much can change so fast and fish are starting to bite...

North is still in the lead on all factors at this point, but the south is very close and we have a great contest going on this year... Good luck all.... J

Okay Jeff, the North leads in everything posted on the board, but there are other calculations where the South leads. First, the South only has 18 fish in the Top 20 category. If you average for each team by their actual number the South leads 27.17 to 26.95. I'll admit that that is a virtual tie, but the South does edge out the North. Second, if you average the North's 23 fish in the Total Length category you get 25.02 while the South still maintains the 27.17 average giving the South more than a two-inch average advantage over the North. This all seems to indicate that the South is a little slow getting untracked this year, but when we do catch our traction, watch out! Some of big dogs haven't even gotten off the porch yet, either. And if we look at the Top Ten score the South is only .85" per fish behind. That doesn't look so much when you think of it that way. As you said, it's very close this year and I wanted both teams to see that we are strongly in it still. SmileFish On

Well if you want to try to manipulate the data I'm sure we can find some way to make team south lead one category or another, but truth is the north is doing better so far this year... Only thing the south leads in, is it's not posting any of the smaller fish to the contest... so yes team north has the smallest fish on the board, oh but that is leading another category too, so maybe we shouldn't look at that either...

Won't be long and things will change again and I won't doubt that the south will take the lead again, but the important thing is lets hope everyone is having a fun time on the pond ... This is the exciting part of the contest where leads can change daily and everyone is an important part of the contest... Towards the end of the year then our individual efforts aren't as noticeable but right now, everyone makes a big difference... Got to give you the raspberries while I can, because I know you'll probably be ahead next time... Later J

I hope nobody took me too seriously. I just didn't want the South to get too down the mouth (like a carp or a sucker). You certainly have us good right now, especially with Ahi hitting 90.

I don't think many of us have not posted smaller fish. If you check you'll see that many of us have posted smaller fish and replaced them as we caught bigger. Things have just been slow down here and a lot of our team members don't get after them until it warms up more. It seems that the hard-core cat chasers are in a slugfest right now but, as you have pointed out, the bench is going be a big factor. It's all fun, anyway Smile.

To tell you the truth, the contest hasn't even hardly started yet... So no one should be feeling like it is over by any means... Most catter's in the contest don't start fishing until May anyway, and that's when the big numbers of fish will start to hit the charts.... Although some will already have pretty high marks to over come, it is possible for sure, but it won't be easy to beat them... Typically we get three or four scores over ninety points per year... John has topped that mountain, but there are several others close enough to do it as well this year... And some don't start fishing until August and can top 90 in one night... So it's not over till it's over... Who knows now, but this might be the year of the 36" fish that will turn the tables on the champions... It could happen... right Lynn... I know I'm looking for that one too... Good luck everyone... Later Jeff

Yup Jeff, I'm still after that 36 incher... have been for ten years now. I remain undaunted, someday soon I will converge with that big one but in the meantime I, like all of us, simply enjoy the pursuit. That's what it is all about anyway.

I still say we will see a 35 incher hit the boards this year. The way John is playing around with his 30+ers while he is waiting for the "big ones" to come out later in the year, would lead me to believe that he will be posting that 35+ cat. But, it won't be without a lot of competition. My money is on Ben for the south but lots of good catters down this way, too.

Great fun and always good to see the pics of big cats caught by all.

I totally know what you mean about it going down to the wire. Last year I was languishing in the middle of the pack with three 26.5s and then at the end of September I caught a 29, a 28, and a 29.5 to boost me way up in the standings. It will be a long haul again this year and so much fun watching the fish roll in for everyone. I still think John might hit 100 points. That would just take two 33s and a 34!

That is the hard part of this contest, you never know which day will be your big day when the big one will bite. So its too tempting to want to fish as many as possible. Thats what gets me in trouble with my wife I get too obsessed. Probably try to not go over the top so much this year and hope when I do get out, it will be a good day. I really had fun last Friday so Id like to get more days like that minus the sunburn.

I agree I think 100 points is possible, but I expect it will be hit when someone pulls in a 37 fish plus two others just over 30. The likelihood of three over 33 isnt very good. We have only had one fish in six years that was bigger than 32.5. So shoot for the new catch and release record and you may break 100. As for me that 90 point level is my hope and goal. Later J

I had a few goals this year. 1st was to beat last year's total, which happened pretty fast. 2nd was to beat my personal best cat, which was 27". I have beat that mark 4 times this year. 3rd was to finish in the top 10 of the contest , which remains to be seen. I never imagined I would be sitting so close to 90 pts at any point during the contest.

Now I will just enjoy the ride. I can only get out maybe once a week for a few hours so I try to make the best of it. I have so many other obligations that it is hard to spend much time pursuing my passion for fishing. I have sure enjoyed the ride so far. Good luck to everyone!

Man that is pretty crazy to hit one of the elite fish of the contest on a time constrained fishing budget... Congratulations to you... If you look back over our six years of the contests, we have only had 9 fish that have been 32" or better and that is with a lot of hours dedicated towards catching big fish.. I'd put that as a pretty great accomplishment... especially for a sophomore with limited time to fish.... also I would say your top ten finishers is a lock, typically a score of 89 will put you in the top five for the year, but I can't guarantee it, every season is different, but your well on your way to the varsity club and a letter's man jacket... We have a big clump of higher than usual scores for this point of the contest, so we may get more 90's this year, but even so I think you're well on the way to a great ending.. Great job and good luck at finding at least one more inch to get a 90 and who knows maybe even challenging the champ for the title... Good luck.. J

Wow big flux of fish yesterday and they were good fish too.... So for Craig we now have a tie for the top 20 fish and the south has filled the 20 too, so this is a dead heat race.... North still holds on to the top 10 lead, but only by a full inch a fish at this point... Too many individuals making big moves, but check the top five positions there were a lot of fish added also keep an eye on Mrs J, she's making an impressive Freshman year run towards the top... Well think I need to go fish so here's your scores...

Wild weekend of scores.... Love this time of the season with tons of new big fish coming in... So when the dust settled after the weekend this is what I have for results... North still in the lead on the big board top ten, Ahi still on top individually, but the south has gained some ground and now leads the top 20 and overall length categories... I'm sure Craig will like that... Here's the scores for you to check and see if I made any mistakes or missed anything that should be there... Let me know if I did... Thanks all... J

Better Check Out this one.... Ahi was just tied by jigfisher..... yup it's really true... Few other fish found their way onto the charts and the south increased it's lead for the top 20 fish... North maintained a lock on the top 10 fish and it's looking like a great contest... Here's the updates... J

Wow team south really poured on the coals this weekend... Look at the total length category... Ben just broke 90 points with a real hog... Team north only holds the lead in the top ten and top scores, but all the big number categories are being dominated by team south... Team north needs to motivate a few more team members to get out and catch some fish for the scoreboard... If I missed anything let me know.?? Later J

We have a few new fish on the board today, helped team north catch up a little with the south on the top 20 and total overall length... Was nice to see these guys get some fish on the board even if they were poached from the south... Nice job Josh and Forest...

Check this out, Ahi is in second place.... Jigfisher moved into first by a half inch... North has tied for the top 20, but the south is miles ahead in total inches of fish entered... Brookie made a hop into the top ten in one day... it was an eventful entry day... And I didn't even mention the two 29.5" fish entered... FishguyBri nailed one to put the norths top 10 fish score to be over 300 points... Check out the details below... Later Jeff

Yup. I looked back at last year and we are waaay ahead of where we were then. It took until 7/7/18 for the North to pass 300 points last year. That's 67 days sooner this year. I didn't know anything last year and got a late start and a learning curve working against me. I didn't reach my current score until August 29, 116 days later than this year. It seems that the intensity has just been dialed up several degrees by everyone and we haven't even hit the main body of the season yet. We all have a long time to push the scores far past 300. It's already getting to the point that you have to post close to a 30" fish to be included in the Top 10. Good luck to everyone.

There will be a lot of big fish yet to come this year, however, for some the contest will be close to over... It's really hard to beat 32" fish and bump your score much, but you don't know unless you keep trying... However, everyone needs to keep in mind bottomwatchers one or two night tally a couple years ago where he went from zero to winning the contest in a very short time... Not all can do that, but it has happened even late in the season... For me I find the bigger fish before the spawn, so my season is running out soon, but a lot of that has to do with farming habits too that take up most of my time... I really wish I had time to get out more now, but I'm already feeling the change of the seasons and my time will be much more limited from here on out... I really want to find a couple more better fish, but not sure when I'll get out to try them... Later J

No its a long ways from over, but I usually always find my biggest fish this time of year. Then they move and I havent found where they go so its really hard for me to get bigger fish later in the year. Plus I dont get out much after the farming gets going. Too much to do and too little time to get it all done. Wanted to go this weekend but Ive got a weeks worth of work to get done in two days. Luckily I have tomorrow off, because theres no way Id get it done in one day. Especially if I keep breaking stuff like I did tonight. Later J

Hey all, looks like a busy weekend with lots of entries and lots of bouncing around the charts... Lots of great moves within the ranks with very solid ranking jumps for several... Congrats to all those that caught so many great fish this weekend. Quick recap of competition rankings, John pulled his Jordon move and tied things up at 92... Team north still in the lead on the top 10 and 20 but overall the south leads total inches of fish caught this year at least those on the chart... We started culling 30" fish today for team north... hard to drop them off the charts, but Ahi didn't need it anymore...
Well won't waste too much of your time, so here's the results... J

Busy time of year with lots of cats coming in daily now... Nice job everyone that got out and caught some more big fish... I won't waste too much of your time, I'll just let you check out the changes as folks climb up the charts... Getting to be a lot of nice scores... South broke 1100" of fish on the chart... North still leads all the prize categories.. I think I like the top 20 deal this year, it kind of blends in the full team scores a little better.. The top ten does the best of both teams but doesn't let as many folks take part... What do you guys think? Later J

The North team has just 4 people with fish in the Top 10, but 11 in the Top 20.

The South team has 6 people with fish in the Top 10 vs. 13 in the Top 20.

We can't all expect to get 30" fish or score as high as Ben or John, but we can all hope to get a 25-27"er to get into the Top 20 and get some recognition. Makes the scoring more like in basketball than soccer or hockey. So far I like the Top 20.

Jeff, maybe you have answered this before, I don't remember. Do the various fill colors in the standings boxes have a specific meaning?
Report Post | Register to Reply
Re: [TinCansMate] Standings 2019 Cat Contest In reply to
Good question, the yellow is for team south, blue is team north. In the fish length boxes the blue is for the top ten north fish. The green is number 11 to 20 fish for team north. The red shade is top ten south and orange is 11-20 for team south. Red numbers represent fish from opposite waters of your team. Hope that covered everything okay. Later J

Apologies to Eball for missing a prior post, but nothing like bouncing to top ten in a single bound... Team north needs to pay attention the south is steadily gaining on the North's lead... Both margins are getting slimmer... However, where is the rest of the northerners.... when it comes to overall fish scored... nearly 700 inches behind...
