East Canyon 1/31
Hit East Canyon yesterday. Started out in 60' just off boat ramp, didn't mark anything. Headed towards south end of lake. Drilled a series of holes on the west side. Marked a few fish in 40 FOW so set up the shack and started fishing. We slayed them all day. Fished for about 10 hours and probably iced around 60-70 fish with some being in 20" range and one that looked very much like a lake trout. It was not a bow a cutt or a tiger. I know my trout and I would swear this was a lake trout. Did not get a pic though. Anyone else ever caught one out there?

Could it have been a Kokanee?

They planted splake in their according to the DWR stocking report. That is probably what you caught. They also planted cutthroats.

Most certainly not a koke or a cutt. Probably a splake if they were stocked as it had laker markings.

Nice report. Glad to hear they're finally biting. How's the ice thickness/edges?

The one I caught was roughly 12" long so I'm pretty certain it was a splake after reading the stocking reports. Ice was thin and broken near the ramp and around the edges near that are but nothing to worry about. The wheeler drive right through it and up on to the thick stuff. There were people out there without machines so getting on to the ice on foot is not a worry at all. 12-14" of ice everywhere we went. A little bit of slush at the end of the day but nothing to fret over. Plenty of thick, safe ice and the fish were HUNGRY! Mini mites tipped with wax and meal worms. I might sink a tip up with a big dead minnow on it out in deeper water trying for a pig next time, I know they're in there I've had a few toads on before. Wish I could find the crappies in there though. If anyone knows how to catch them feel free to send me a PM, I will completely finance a trip for anyone that is willing to help me with finding the crappies in EC and I have a security clearance so I know how to keep secrets!

I reply here because we might put together a team effort. I haven't fished for crappy yet, but do have a serious start into ice fishing. As a member of our crappy hunt team, I'll bring my Marcum LX-9 (great for locating and identifying structure) and my big new ice fishing tent and a positive attitude.

Let's go fishing! I prefer to fish with others. I'm well equipped with plenty to share and have a vehicle with amazing off road capabilities to get us to even hard to reach fishing destinations. Let's team up! Private Message me to suggest I come to where you're fishing or plan a trip with me!

Who here is a surf fisherman? That's my next big vacation. I've already purchased top equipment for surf fishing. I'm looking to hire a guide or go with someone experienced.

Date proposal to single young BFT fisherladies with courage enough to put a worm on a hook: Sunday August 18 at 8 A.M. fly the Air Chair (this is sorta like water skiing, but better -- see in my profile pictures) with me at Deer Creek. Movie on Tuesday, but it hasn't been picked yet.

Shhhhhh there's no crappie in East Canyon Wink The last time I caught crappie there was two years ago in the spring. With the water being so low they didn't have as much structure/bushes to stack up in, so I'm guessing the numbers just haven't come back. We'd catch them in the fingers and inlets, but now you're 50 feet below where we were catching them before. Just my two cents.

Where I fished there just two weeks ago, I did notice the water was much lower and the video of the bottom in the many holes in the area I fished showed just a sandy bottom with no branches or weeds or even rocks. But, we were fishing for rainbow trout.
