South Marina Meetup 7-13-17
FatBiker couldn't make this morning's high level meeting at Willard's south marina. Neither could Donald Trump or any of the Russians. But SkunkedAgain actually showed up before me. Although when I saw a real live skunk beside the road going in I wondered if it was an omen. Nope.

Nice morning. Air 68 and water 78 at launch. Lots of fish on sonar in the channel but most had their little mouths closed. Saw a big bait ball (see sonar pic) with some bigger fish hanging around it. Jeff scored the first fish...a nice 20 inch kitty...while still inside the channel. No skunk for him.

Took me a while to find some love. Only got a few light bites on plastics. Guessing they were either young wipers or small smallies. Couldn't prove it either way. Then the kitties came out to play. Got several on a slip bobber rig with a minnow...rigged for wipers but accepted by kittykind. Got several more on small white tube jigs tipped with worm. And got a couple on a dropshot rigged minnow with some bling beads...silver and blue.

Had one big fish tear off about 50 yards of line before coming unbuttoned. Guessing I had foul hooked a carp. But since this is BFT and all members allow others to claim anything they want on large fish lost (as in BLK's 36 inch cats) I'm saying it was a new state record wipper (yeah, I know).

Jeff had more bites than he scored fish, but he got some kitty action too. But then he got battery problems and started heading back in by 10ish. I folded up and followed him back down the dike in case he might need a tow in the building bouncy wavelets. But he made it under his own power.

Saw a couple of mini boils right inside the mouth of the channel on the way back in. No action on any of the offerings I threw at them. Also none at the brief top water flurry in front of the brushy point by the ramps. But a guy and his wife anchored and soaking mussels (not muscles) had a couple of smallish wipers and caught one while I watched. That made it 3 to 1 for the ladies side of the boat.

Nice day, with some good kitties for the fryer.

Hey Pat, was a fun morning... Much better than going to work... even though I ended up there after.... Decided it's been too long since I've been fishing, that first cat about pulled me in, thought I'd have a scorer for the contest, but couldn't stretch it past 24", but it sure fought well.. Thanks for the invite and the filleting... It was fun to get on the water again, enjoyed the company and tips too... Thanks... Later J

Always good to share some water with ya Jeff.

You are saddled with a mean schedule...family, farm and a real job. You need to MAKE more time for yourself...not just find time. Hard to do and keep both a marriage and a job together.

Several years ago I was doing some original research on stress management...for a company that employed me to do so. One of the things I picked up from my readings was a quote from a (name forgotten) medical school that vacations (downtime) were a necessity...not a luxury.

Glad you enjoyed my "weight loss" program on the kitties (filleting).

Pat, sounds like you guys did well. Wish I could have made it. Tough passing on a outing with two of my favorite fishermen. Trying to get out in the morning.

LOL, depends. If vacations mean getting with wife's family, again, and again, then the stress levels are less at work.

Guess it depends on what downtime means. Pirate

Right ye be. My philosophy is that any vacation that requires "recovery time" is not a good vacation.

I also believe that a vacation is not measured by time, but by the benefits. Thus, a simple morning getaway fishing trip can often be a great stress reliever with lasting feel-goods. My term for these quick but lovely trips is "brain-broom".

You were missed...and fondly remembered by both of us. Even said some good things about you.

But neither of us feel sorry for you...living as close to Willard as you do and all the trips you get in that we don't. So there.

Hey Pat that was the start of great weekend for me... I enjoyed our cat venture on Willard and the next day went up to Oneida reservoir with our young men group to take them fishing... Loved that assignment.... Kind of nice not being the one in charge this time, so after the boys were done fishing and headed to run the river, I got some me fish time in.... It was slow but great fun.... Got quite a batch of mixed fish over those two days from cats to smallies to walleye to trout to perch and green sunfish... One smallie was pretty nice for me, it was a 16.5" (2 and half pounder), so one of my better ones... wish those fish would have been in Utah so I could enter them in the contest... would have helped my stalled score out a little... But most of all it helped renew my spirits and addiction... I sure love to fish... Larry sorry we missed you, I brought my flyrod to Willard so you could tutor me on that method your perfecting... Maybe next time... I went empty on my fly flinging attempt there... Later J

Sounds like a good multi-species weekend. That is a big motivator for me...going somewhere I can hope to catch more than one species. Willard has rewarded me with some 4 and 5 species days. But when the kitties are all that want to play I don't complain.

It is fun not knowing what will come in next. Here's a photo of the spoils on the way to the fillet table. Forgot to post it before. Later J

Hey Jeff, were those all caught at Oneida on the reservoir or the river? I am heading there either tomorrow or Wednesday for a day of fishing and am curious as to how the fishing is and if they are deep yet or not? That's a great haul and nice eating!

Hey Mike all were caught on the reservoir, we were fishing from Maple grove camp ground... Fish the edges first thing before the sun hits the water, then they move deep quickly... Big one came out of 20 FOW bottom bouncing... walleye was nearly the same spot...in fact the trout was right there too... Camp host was telling of a 30" walleye that came out of the middle, (old river channel) in the last few weeks... said they were finding lots of the bigger smallies there as well... (this was after I was pulling the boat out, so I didn't go looking for the spot) Fish along the edges were mostly the smaller fish now that I think of it... Let most of them go... Did find a big school of perch off the point just out from launch, but couldn't make them bite... Put the Marcum camera down and watched them, but they didn't want worms, niblets or jigs or anything that I tried... Youngmen loved watching the fish even if they wouldn't bite.. May have been a time of day thing, why they didn't bite.... Anyway I sure hope you have a good trip and get a fun day in.. Later J

Watch out for the crazy drivers on that road. I nearly got ran over by that Clift next to the road. Camper came around that little curve at 30-40 and didn't see me till I was sure puckering up, glad I was in my truck. Week day should be a lot less popular. Have fun. J
