Saw ice in areas of the Weber River on our way home today. Our pond has frozen over but with night temps here (near Mtn Green) the last two nights between 0-3 degrees it's no wonder. If this keeps up, we'll be ice fishing Pineview before you know it....

Howz your area doing for ice out there? Seeing Mantua with icebergs floating tonight makes me think the ice up may be near. Snow really melted off today but the ice seems to be building. 3 degrees colder tonight when I got home verses last night. Well good luck. J

Thanks Jill, that's a big deal if rivers are icing. Won't be long. Thanks for the report. J

So far we’ve been mostly ice free out to the GSL. Just a little here and there.

Seeing the first forms of ice on Mantua is a beautiful sight. Thanks for sharing.

hey Skunked where is home? You seem to be right in the same areas as I am. I live just south of Smith and Edwards.

I live up in Benson, which is west of Logan. But I work at Hill so I'm down past you each work day. My commute puts me past Willard and Mantua each day and Hyrum isn't far to the side as well. Amazing I make it to work some days. Later J

We’re getting ice, but the wind helps in breaking it up. I’m sure today will be different because there isn’t much wind. Yesterday we had six hunters and six limits.

I've never been to Mantua . I read that it has bluegills. I would love to come up and go after them. Is the lake really big? Is it obvious where to drill holes?

Mantua is a fair sized lake but not big by any means... It's usually the first to freeze so everyone hits it for first ice.. I will put a disclaimer here because I know first ice is in the Uinta's, but this is the first pond the general population is able to hit so it draws a crowd... You can tell where to fish by the follow the crowd principal, or the south east corner of the pond is more shallow and has good gills, bass and trout in that area... Some perch too... Mantua is one spot it's tough to get away from the crowd, but if you can get a little space you usually do a little better... There are fish in most spots on the lake, but you have to avoid setting up in too many weeds so the fish can find your offering... if they aren't biting after half hour move a little ways and try again... Let me know when you're going and if I'm going to be there, you're more than welcome to join me... Later J

One thing to be aware of at Mantua are the warm springs. Be careful around areas where the snow is more melted on top of the ice.

From the Hyrum cams, it appears that the inlet is frozen as of a couple hours ago.

Wow I wouldn't expect that one to start this soon, but that's great news... Thanks for the update we'll watch the cams... I'm working from home today so I won't go by mantua today and it was floating ice bergs yesterday when I went by at the end of day.. Did anyone see if it tacked over the whole pond today? Later J

From what I saw this morning driving past it was all but capped with a couple open spots here and there.

Back to ice fishing! Just drove past mantua ice covered Except for one spot still holding 50 ducks. Clear and thin. On my way to spend the night on Cisco back. Fish tonight and early morning. For white fish, no snow light wind . no one else is here.

Great news, we may just get ice to fish, no real storms to break it up or warm it up so it might happen... I may see you at cisco in the morning... Hope to head that way in the AM... Let us know how you do.. Later J

Thanks for that update I like what you're telling me. Think it's freezing a little slower this year so may take longer to get thick enough but should be good ice when we get there. Thanks J

Do you know if the white fish come in shore in the evening like they do in the morning

If someone hunted those ducks they would probably leave and the open spot could freeze. Just say'n.

Mike or Scott would be best to answer that question I think they are usually best in the morning but I have caught them into the afternoon. I usually get froze out or have to be home before the late afternoon shot so I don't know what to tell you. Sorry J
