A so-so weekend
I took Thursday off work and spent the day at Willard south getting the season opener maintenance done on the boat. My little TinCan will be 11 years old this July and has blessed me with many, many enjoyable hours on some of the various northern waters of this stateWink. And given me a few seconds once or twice of flat out shear heart stopping terror! Pirate. Thursday I got the oil and filter and lower end lube changed. I replaced 2 corroded out side guide lights (have to do that almost every season, but the whole assemblies are cheaper than a pack of 2 new bulbs Unsure) Also replaced the carpet on the bunks and repaired some on the side guides.
Had a pleasant conversation with a DNR Ranger (he was in his truck and I was sitting behind my motor lower end, so didn't see his name)
Just as I was finishing getting road ready to leave, a BFT'er I've seen on the forum several times but never met walked up and started a conversation. Was good to put another face with a name. Didn't get any lines wet Thursday, but confirmed the boat still has a sound hull and floats, and all the doo-dads in it still work.

Friday was my normal off day - pay day so decided to see if I could sneak up on Ahi at BRBR. Well I got there, but turns out he was having some work done on his truck, and I was the only person I saw anywhere on the river that was fishing (NOT catchin, just fishin)

Spent Saturday doing some home chores, and some additional tinkering on the boat.

The weather guessers said that is was gonna be about 50-50-50 today in the Utah Lake area. 50 % clouds, 50 % sun, & 50 degrees. I figured that was kinda in my tolerance range and headed out what I thought was early this morning. (Forgot Daylight Saving Time started last night) They been "saving daylight" for as long as I can remember. I sure hope we are gonna get some of it back someday. Sly
Anyway, I got all my clocks "sprung forward" an hour. Or I though I did until I turned on my sonar at Lincoln Beach. It was only off by an hour..................Unsure

LB Marina is averaging 3 to 3.5 fow, and a pretty steady 3.5 fow down the middle of the channel to the mouth where it opens up to 4.5 fow, and quickly drops off to
6 - 7 fow around to left heading towards the first spring.
I never got even that far. Just outside the channel I saw lots of stuff in the water that was making a good impression of fish, so I anchored out and dropped in a couple lines. OK, no details, just call this skunk # 1 for me at LB and # 2 for t he season so far.Mad
The wind was a bit more than I wanted to deal with , the fish were not cooperating, and again, I was the only crazy out there. Called it and early day and beat the traffic back to Ogden.

Thatís about what I got was 3.5 around dock and channel. I to got skunked but I didnít even find any fish on the sonar so you got that on me. Sounds like you at least got out and got to enjoy the boat and go]t the cob webs cleared so itís ready for the season.

Hey Forest, sounds like you're already to go... Best of luck to you... I've had so many wasted cat trips this time of year that I don't even bother yet... Especially while there's still ice to fish and trout that actually want to play... Couple weeks when I get my taxes done and out of the way I'll start to get ready for the summer season... Hope you get a few monsters and make me eat my words, before then... Later J

Yea, I wasn't really holding my breath expecting to hook up a big cat, or even any cat. Was kinda hoping for some white bass though Sly

I thought that photo looked like it was taken in the dark. It was nice to see as much water in the LB channel this early in the year. Just hope it gets better or at least no less than it is now.

I did a drive thru in a Tan Dodge Nitro and noticed a fellow working on his trailer bunks that day.

Don't remember if I saw you, but if it was an old fat guy laying under a Yacht Club trailer with a cordless drill, then it was me............Unsure

Sounds like me and you need to work on our fishing zen. I've noticed as long as I'm positive and think I'm going to catch fish, then I do. But as soon as I start to doubt I'll get any more it shuts off and I'm done for the day. Hate it when my confidence starts to wobble because it's hard to recover on that trip. Have you ever noticed this or am I crazy? Later J

Or after shaking up the confidence level, you go thru your arsenal and find a lure that finally produced with a catch a small catch but not a skunk only to notice that the one lure catch died off furthering the confidence drain. This makes for a long day after being there for what seemed like a short time as it was with another 4-5hrs looming trying. Especially after a long drive one way to your destination. Misery loves company-thats me. [bobbeaten]

Yep, we are both a bit crazy. But I always start the season with lots of confidence. Haven't really got this season started yet. My 2 trip to the water to get a line wet were more river recon and boat check out.

Sounds like I'm not the only one. Why is it big trips are the easiest to get psyched out on? Later J

Forest don't let the early season set any tone for the year. Come April and May that's when it starts to get good up north. You'll gettem this year. Do you have a goal you're shooting at? I hit 82 last year so I'm hoping for at least 86 this year. Don't think I've got a champion season in me but hoping to be a stronger contender this year. I just don't have the time it takes to pull off an effort like our champs put in. I'd like to find a couple near 30" this year though. Good luck to you and the Mrs. Later J

Don't remember my total last year. 60 something I think. I'm not worried about getting any record breakers. Just want to get at least 3 respectable Cats on the board, and NOT get skunked 18 times in a row at Willard this year.Unsure Last year was the worst season I've had at WB since I bought my first boat in 2004. But I'm gonna keep at it as much as I can.

Willard was rough last year I only fished a couple times and never did have a great day. We avoided the skunk but not by much. Let's hope for a better year. Later J

I've slowed down quite a bit. Willard didn't treat me well either except for the bugs. I'm going to invest a little more time at Strawberry this summer with the usual trip over to the Gorge. I do have one 3day trip to Fish L in the plans. Fish On

Sounds like fun plans you have there... I guess Willard spoiled me the two years before when I could catch eyes and wiper every trip not to mention the cats, crappie and smallies... but I usually give up down there after the power squadron shows up in force anyway.... wish I had enough free time to follow you around it sounds like fun... Hope it goes well for you... Later J

Your welcome to jump in my boat for a day adventure, Bear L is in my driving distance along with Strawberry. I stay away from the local lakes during summer months when the lice starts getting heavy. I even stretch driving time to the Gorge. Fish L is just too far from Ogden. Awaiting the weather to settle some to find a day to venture out, retirement means there is no set day for me. Everyday is the same, I don't have a watch but only keep my sites on big red to tell me when the end of the day is coming. I'm flexible if you can only do a certain day of the week/end.

Willard was both good and bad to me last year. 5 trips out of a total of 12 produced near 70 wipers total, while the rest of the trips gave up only 0-2 each trip. Mostly 0s. The best trip of the outings, gave up near 40 nice wipers in late April fishing with a blue over silver rapala and blue over silver rattletrap.

Wow that one trip was incredible... You had to have tired arms after that trip...I've had a 12 wiper/walleye day once and been tired from pulling them in, that had to be a real memory making day... Usually a couple wiper makes my day... I hope one day to hit it right and have that kind of fun.... I probably don't fish it enough to hit one of those really great days though... Nice to hear that they do happen even on slow years like last year... Wish I knew what the formula was to make great days so I could be there on all of them... If you figure that out let me know... Thanks for adding a little encouraging news from last year, I needed some motivation to get excited about going back to the bay... Guess the flotilla isn't too far off now... That should be fun again... Later J

It was a once in a lifetime trip most likely. It was truly incredible. I started counting casts instead of fish and I couldn't cast more than 5 times without landing a fish and missing several others. I dream about a repeat some day.

Jeff, i have fished Willard every year since 2004. I've had good days, and great days, and terrible days. There are 2 main reasons I keep going back .......1) It's close to where I live Wink 2) It changes EVERY TIME I'm on the water, so always a challenge.
