Thanks. Sounds like I'm on the right track then. I picked up an Ugly Stick Catfish at $10 off yesterday and have a GX2 7' medium. I'm leaning heavily toward a Quantum Optix 60. Is that a good size? I don't want to be ridiculously over-geared but I don't want to be the guy who loses a big one due to inadequate tackle, either.

I'm not that familiar with that reel, but I agree completely with the comment about don't over gear. I have one rig that is a tank (large reel and heavy rod) and it's no fun to catch fish on. Get A good quality medium size reel. I really like my Okuma Avenger B it's the bait feeder version of the reel and I love that one. But wait for them to go on sale don't pay $60 for it. I got mine for around $40. You have the right ideas just find the one that will work for you. Have fun. J

Sorry catchinon I didn't get to your post, I haven't checked Cat Chat for a while.
Looks like Jeff and forest answered . my set up: 8' ugly stick, an inexpensive Abu Garcia spinning reel loaded with 40# power pro, like Jeff I use a 14# mono leader,3/0 to a 5/0 hook. Good Luck

Thanks for getting back to me. Your advice is very helpful. Do you recommend the Croch hooks? I don't have it all figured out yet, but I'm catchinon.

P.S. What really ticks me off though is that I have to buy new fishing tackle ;o).

brand of hook really don't matter. as long as they are nice and sharp. catfish lips are pretty thick. I like the octopus circle myself but a bait holder or straight worm hook would work . I've even have used Kahle hooks.

Finally got out to Lincoln Beach to try for catfish last night. Was using what tackle I already have until I can get new reels ordered. Fished a worm on a large Eagle Claw baitholder under a bobber at various depths. Nothing. On the other I snelled an Eagle Claw circle hook baited with a big cross section of a white bass about an inch thick, everything included. I ran the 2/0 hook through the meat of the "loin" and out through the skin of the back, leaving what I thought was plenty of hook exposed. I was heeding Ahi's and others' advice to go big bait for big fish ( I would need a 28"er to really help my team). I had it about 6' under a bobber which put it near or on the bottom. I looked away at my other bobber and when I looked back the bobber was headed toward the boat ramp! By the time I picked up my rod and reeled in the slack the bobber had gone under. I just reeled like they say to do with circle hooks. The fish felt heavy and was pulling line against drag quite easily. Then nothing, fish off. What I think happened is he had grabbed the bait by the belly section and never had the hook in his mouth. What do you think? What can I do better next time? I cut off the skirts below the ribs and tried again, but got rained out before I could get anything else on.

It happens, I'd suggest using bigger hooks 5/0 or 6/0 and keep the tips open so the bait doesn't shield the hook from being able to engage with the fish when you set it... Time will help you learn the best sizes and shapes of bait to work better, but I still have the same problem often, so figure you win some, you'll lose some... These days I skin my bait and thread it on like a worm. I don't use too big of bait either (1.5 to 2" in both directions), but I do cover the hook pretty full except around the point... I think the fish carry that in their mouth and we tend to pull it out unless the tip of the hook catches hold...Just my thoughts as to how it's working... Better luck next time... J

Thank you. So a 2" strip fillet from the back of a white bass or chub (what I have right now) should work?

I strongly agree with SA that you want to leave the point of the hook exposed.

One other thing you have to be careful of, if you are using WB that is not skinned, is the scales. I have used whites both skinned and not skinned and I prefer the skin on so the smaller fish can't steal it completely.

Almost every time I put a hook through a chunk of WB, I end up with a scale impaled on the point of the hook. They are tough scales, so you just back them off the point.

If you don't remove the scale you almost never get enough penetration to land the fish.

Thanks for the info. What sort of hook do you use?

For standard size baits (1 to 2" Chunks) I often use a 1/0 baitholder style without the turned down eye.

If I'm fishing larger baits, a 3/0 octopus style usually gets the nod.

I have only tried circle hooks a time or two for larger baits and I had lots of fish carry the bait around and not get hooked. Probobly user error though because I know good fishermen who won't us anything else.

I think leaving the point well exposed and sharp is more critical than the exact style.

I have used circle hooks the last few years, and like them, but there are times when I just want to set the hook. I have some Tru-turn catfish hooks I got on clearance at walmart last year, and I like them, but today I was using a simple #2 baitholder. I caught several nice cats on a smaller piece of carp meat (half the size of my little finger) but each time I was surprised to have successfully landed them, with the hook just caught in the lip. A larger bait had only one hit. All three of my fish were on the small bait either suspended or on the bottom.

If you do use circle hooks, try hooking them through the corner of the bait, at an angle so the bait can't turn over and block the hook gap. Don't worry about burying the hook point in the bait or hiding the hook. In my experience, a hungry cat won't hesitate to take up the hook as well as bait.

Take a look at how freely the bait is hooked in this image. I have to use a link as I'm not sure how to insert the image directly.

Nice looking bump board. Simple, but highly visible with that metal yard stick. I just might make one like that.

Very lite weight. Made out of a cedar fence plank. I overbuilt my other board. It was to heavy to carry when I go bank tangling.

Yep, me too. Over built my bump board a few years ago too. Works ok on the boat, don't have to worry about it blowing out. But like you, too heavy to take to the river.

I know Jeff is going to say that I say this every time.
But it really has been tough down on the lower part of the Bear River. Water was way down , they have just closed all the gates so the main river is starting to rise a little. all the channels after the gates are extremely low and stagnate. Most of my days have ranged from little fish in the 16-22 inch class. Every now and then I manage to find a 27"er but nothing more.

Have also tried it at night. Some times until 2:30 am. Same results. with all little guys and the occasional big fish but nothing over 27 .

That wasn't the encouragement I was looking for. I'm a day out from being able to fish again so don't tell me its terrible. I don't think I can handle that at this point of needing a fix. But that's usually how it goes, by the time the lull between crops hits the cats are moved from where they were a month ago. I've never cracked the summer code, so I was hoping to still find some chasing carp spawns. Old icesled really bumped me out of second so I need to try finding my 30's. If you aren't finding them then I'm in trouble. Later J

Might be better up your way Jeff. tried this evening but wind just kept blowing my rod all over the place couldn't see if they were biting or not gave up at 10:30.
There is still plenty of time. I looked at last years scores and I didn't start finding really big fish until the end of July and into August.
