I hate to cry foul but I think that might be a big Almaco Jack. We get both here in my area and the Ambers don't get the long points on the dorsal and anal fins. If thats an Almaco that is a heck of a fish.

To be honest, I wasn't sure one way or the other, however, after reading all about both fish (almacos and greater amberjacks) I figured it was an aj, if for no other reason than the size. You could be right though. I have some other pictures of it that I could post, perhaps you could help me figure it out once and for all. Let me know.

I studied your picture a lot and I'm not sure one way or the other. I have landed at least 1000 AJ's of all sizes and never saw one with the defined point like yours. I have also caught several hundred Almaco's and none that big. Also the Almaco Jack usually has a more football like shape with a much bigger hump in the back at the dorsal. Your fish may be either one, and it could very well be a sub-species of the Greater Amberjack. I'll tell you it has peaked my interest to the point I would love to get there some time and land one for scientific study.

I'm going to take this conversation to the saltwater fishing section under a new post "Amberjack or Almacojack".

Those extra pics really helped, I know for sure that is an Almaco Jack. It is one heck of a catch to boot, be sure to post it under the correct species, I have a feeling it will be at the top of the list for a long time. Great Job.

This is DEFINITELY not an amberjack. Looks like a Crevalle Jack. This is what an AJ looks like:
