Nice Cat, again John. For lack of anything better to do Friday morning, I put the boat on the river. Went up river a ways past the Hunt Club. Caught 1 small kitty that saved me from a skunk. But the Deer Flies ate me alive !!!!!Mad Then when I get home the wife tells me, hey did you know Deer Flies go after "moving targets" ?
So, was I supposed to just sit still and let them chew on me...........? Unsure
Still treating a couple big bites under my left arm with Benedryl gel.

Dang deer flies.those man eater don't care if your moving or as still as stone. they are so stealthy that you don't know they are on you until the bite. like a b-2 .then they keep sucking your blood til you swat them and the tough little beast just flop around on the ground for a second and fly off.
As for the fishing day trips have been really bad. the night bite not much but once in a while you can get something to bite. No deer flies but the midges and other night bugs are out in swarms. as soon as you turn on the light they are on you flying up your noise in your ears and eyes.

Had some deer flies on me today, no bites and I killed one. Ever had a chunk taken out of you by a horse fly? Now there's a bite that really gets your attention. Lucky we don't usually take our horses along fishing.

Oh snap! Just when I thought that the south was going to pull ahead in comes bottomwatcher, a player that rivals Ahi and ice_sled. We really have our work cut out now. Go, South team, go!

Glad you mentioned that. Bottomwatcher took the whole shebang that year with 94.5 points, just ahead of a guy named Ahi and another that goes by ice_sled. Here's why I'm not too worried: more than a few guys have caught cats from 30"+ for the south and are still hitting it hard. They could and should be adding to the south score soon. (Info back to 2015.)

Here they are:

BLK: won in 2015 with 31,31,30
Catcarsen: 30 (tied Bottomwatcher in 2015 for overall score)
Pisco: 32
Catnipper: 30
ice_sled: 32.5
MSM1970: 30,30

There are also several others who should still add to the points according to past performance:

TubeDude: 29.5, 29, 29
BLK: 29.5,29,29,28.5,28.5
ice_sled: 29.5,29
Catslayer: 28.5
Pisco: 29

Others who have shot to the top recently:
Paddlingkittys: 32
Puddyyak: 31

(Hope I haven't missed anyone.)
Woops, I did miss someone. MSM1970 posted two 30"ers in 2016; added above.

We also have a large number of players who could get "lucky" and add a superfish at any time now. Oh, and the South has twice as many people on the leader board as the North has.

[Some of you may wonder, "Who is this guy, anyway?" Well, I'm a third-string JV wannabe who may surprise you yet, with a little help from my friends.Ever since I was Sports Information Director for my college I have been fascinated with what statistics can tell us. Hope I didn't ruffle any feathers with this.]

I was just reviewing Cat Chat to see what I might have missed along the way. Back at the end of March Kfisher asked, "What does a 30" channel cat typically weigh? I haven't had a scale so I have no idea what any of the fish i have caught weighed." You may recall that I had worked out a scale to answer that sort of question. Then I came to realize that hardly anyone wanted that much detail. Later I realized that it was really simple:

Take the cat's length in inches
Subtract 20
Add one

Example:
26"
Subtract 20 = 6
Add one =7 pound fish

When you are bragging to other people the inches thing may not register but the weight often does.

This trick works for catfish between 24 and 30 inches, more or less. You have to add a pound and a half to two pounds for the bigger fish instead of one.

That will definitely get you in the ballpark. My first 28.5" cat weighed just over 8lbs. I think it might be closer without adding after subtracting 20.

I'm sure it will vary depending on the time of year, etc. Like so many things in life there is a big ID factor involved: It Depends. I'm sure that they are lighter after the spawn versus when they are fat and sassy other times of the year.

yes the ID factor dose come in to play. your scale is close.

29" caught March 12

And a 29.5 caught March 31

I'm just thrilled to have caught two 30"ers this year...after having never caught one! Previous high was 29.5 at cache junction in 2017. These 30"ers were near the Benson Marina area.
Now, having fished Utah Lake as a kid, i can attest for the giants that come out of there. Whats the biggest from there this year- anyone know offhand?

As you probably know the biggest entered in the contest is 32.5 but I believe I heard of a 33 by somebody outside.

For historical perspective I think I read from TD that years ago he caught one that extended some inches beyond the end of a yardstick. And, of course the state record is nearly 40 inches.

Wow you guys have been busy in my absence. Hey everyone I'll try and get things updated as soon as I can. Been in the Winds last week so I'm catching up for that now. Get the leader board as soon as I can. Be fun to see the changes. Later J

While you were gone there was a big flurry of activity and now that you are back we seem to be in a lull, so maybe you can relax a little. Oh well, you might have just a little bit of farming to do to keep you busy. Hope you can get after the cats again soon, too.

Hey Thanks and you are correct, been up since 2:30 baling before my day job kicked in around 6:00 this morning. I'm thinking I'm going to crash soon. But I'm just about done baling, only one small field left. Now if I can get it sold or hauled I might get a chance to fish. Thanks for the well wish. Later Jeff
