My how times have changed - Electric Lake
Fished Electric Lake yesterday with a fellow BFTer. When I was a youngster (been a few years), I camped and fished many of the reservoirs up Fairview canyon with my parents. Because my dad worked shift work, at Geneva, his days off varied every week. Back in those days, we could camp and fish up there, during the week, and maybe see one or two other anglers during the day. That time has come and long passed. I noted yesterday numerous folks camping at Electric Lake, three other boats, some fishing from kayaks and a couple tubers.

When we arrived, I immediately, threw out my minnow traps near the boat ramp (one was a little too close). One other boat launched while we were prepping. I never load passengers next to the ramp there, because the water is on the shallow side, so I was concerned when I saw the boat pull in right on top of one of my minnow traps. When we went down to launch I pulled in one trap and had about 15 minnows and then I noticed the other trap was in two pieces (it does break apart) and it was partially smashed. It is easily repairable but of course the minnows escaped.

Fishing report. We landed 11 tigers and cutts (mostly tigers) lost a few others and I missed way more bites than I typically do. Caught fish vertically jigging, casting and bouncing tube jigs back to the boat and drop shotting, with a whole minnow or a whole night crawler. The water is dropping quickly and it won't be very long before one will not be able to launch using the ramp.

I made one pass down by the dam looking for kokes on my sonar and didn't see any schools, so bagged that and moved on after the cutts and tigers.

Yep, I wouldn't bother fishing up there if the tigers weren't there. Those yellowstone cutts don't come close to fighting as hard as the bear lake cutts do (which also aren't known as hard fighters). I remember when they had a slot on the cutts there, which was much more restrictive than the slot at Strawberry.

Dont blame you, going for those tigers is alot more fun, I dont remember my brother ever saying there where schools, I think it was more just a few at a time, he's alot better at kokes than me. I thinking for all those misses, I wonder if putting a stinger on would help get those short hits.

I go there as mush for the scenery and lac of people as compared to other places, wind dont get out of hand, can find somewhere to hide,
so dont tell anyone how nice it is there.Wink

We fished there earlier in the year for Kokes. We did OK but mostly small. One Koke was a little bigger, maybe 14 inches.
Has anyone seen any larger kokes at Electric? Koke size sure seems to vary from lake to lake a lot. I am still not sure what size is "normal" for Electric

I have to agree Kent. I fished the stream in that canyon (before electric lake was there) as well as all the lakes there, With my grandfather who raised me. In those days there was no paved roads and the biggest worry during the week was if you broke down you might be there a while before you see anyone (days)
Had 1 trip when 3 of my cousins and I (we were about 10) Went for a 2 day camping trip to millers flat. It turned into 8 days due to heavy rains. We lived on fish and lamb chops ( the sheep herder saw we needed food and slaughtered a sheep and gave us a hind quarter.
As a kid we thought that trip was the greatest trip ever. But then , we didn't know my grandmother had everyone but the national guard on horseback looking for us. Good memories

Okay, let me set the record straight. I am the fellow BFTer that went along for the ride. I think Kent may not have wanted to out me for a near skunk. He tried everything to help me catch something. And I did. I caught one or two--I don't know exactly, I lost count after awhile. And I believe that Kent caught a lot more than he is letting on, or probably he lost count too. At least I caught a tiger which adds to my species count for this year. I'm up to nine and ice season is still a long way off.

It is one of the loveliest days I've ever spent fishing. Huge fluffy white clouds dotted the sky over the aspen- and fir-covered hills. The trout were beautiful flashes and slashes of green and orange. And man do those tigers fight; reminded me why they are just about my favorite fish.

Thanks for a good day Kent.
