And I thought that my #14 salmon egg hooks were small. How do you bait a little pup like that? Bit of worm?

I use them to tie teeny tiny flies

Been a bit more interest in the Small Cat part of the contest this year. I even had the "lead" smallest for a few days, then my wife did for a few days. Now the smallest cat is verified 4 inches.
The photo attached isn't from this year or even part of the contest when it was caught. But wish I could get one like it now Sly

That is a 3 inch rat-l-trap that it bit on one of the treble hooks. Lure looks bigger than the fish..............Wink Fish On

What is up with you guys up north? You come down and set a fire up Spanish Fork Canyon that funnels all the smoke to us so we don't dare go out and go fishing. Sheesh!

I think your smoke is up here as well, but only little fish are biting for me anyway. Been twice this week and not a fish over 20". Don't know where all the larger fish are. Later J

yes it has been smokey here. Makes it hard on breathing but sure makes for some awesome sunsets.

Still finding a few big fish down here Jeff. not as many as I was and not big enough. You do have to put up with a lot of little guys though.

Funny one day I was finding nice fish in a hole and ever since they are 12"ers. Guess I need to keep at it but kind of hard when ya have so many other requirements for your time. Wish I could fish more but it's just not going to happen this time of year anyway. Good luck. J

can't believe how many upper 20" cats (from 24-29) are coming out of the bear river this year. here are a few including my last 32"er. this was just the past week.

Nice fish!
There are alot of nice fish coming out of there this year, hopefully next year them 32" fish grow a few more inches. I still can't find any lunkers like you, they haven't moved into the holes I usually do good at.
Wonder if this weather will have them not biting for awhile or turn them on? Well, keep the big ones rolling in, don't want the South thinking they still have a chance! Haha.

John, you just keep rackin up those Cats. Keeps me hopeful I'll hook one or two before October.....Wink
Thanks for the bag of bait today. I soaked it in the chicken blood I had. Got lots of taps, and hits on the meat, but didn't stay long enough to see if a bigger cat would take the hook.

Well no skunk today, but not by much. I did catch 35 inches of Channel Cat..................

................if you put all 7 of the 5 inch Cats like this I caught under the bridge where we were before you left. Laugh
Thought maybe I had a winning "small cat" with this first one, but all 7 were right at 5 inches.
Think Jeff would notice if I had put them all on my bump board nose to tail ? Wink

Hey Forest you might try slipping that cat chain past me, it might work.... I've been stuck catching those little guys the last couple trips out... Looks good for the future, but it's sure hard to catch anything else lately... Wonder if these are natural spawn, or left over from the planting last summer??? Cool to see a good young crop on the way... Later J

7 fish yesterday ! You did better than me Forest . I only managed 2 that might make 14" each . Not sure if the sudden cool down has them turned off. Taking a day of rest. Just might check out the night bite again. Was enjoying finding a few fish during the day lest bugs to put up with.

Hey John,
I'll give it a try tonight and see if I can find something, got a night break between crops and the moon is looking fuller so I'm hoping tonight will reward me with a fish or two and hopefully one big enough to bump my score... If I caught the fish you do weekly I'd bump my score, but somehow my catches aren't cutting it... Hopefully I at least break 20" tonight, been a while since I even did that... Good luck my friend... Later Jeff

yes Jeff I think night time might be the right time for now. I went yesterday and got skunked. Went again last night and found a 29"er a 27.5 and two 27s

Nice job!!! We found a lot of small kitties but nothing close to your smallest. I just don't have this summer catting thing figured out. I did have one close to the smallest cat of the year but it was still 5" so didn't even qualify there. Nice job!!! J

Hey John, been an almost full moon last couple nites and tonite is Full Moon according to calendar. Wife and I went out to river at that same spot late this afternoon. Was mainly a test run on the new bank rod holders I finally got around to building. They hold the rods well, but will have to see how they hold up to a big cat or carp hit. At least I wont be relying on my tackle box to keep some big bull cat from dragging the rod in.

Rod holders look good Forest. I think they will hold up great on a big cat tug.

Those are some nice looking rod holders--simple, clean, and rugged (kinda like me). Let us know how they hold up. I like how you have one for the net--now you just need one with an umbrella in it!

I have the rebar to make 3 more. Just need to get another Berkeley 3 rod holder rack, and some more clamps. That will let the wife and I each have 2 for our poles, one for the net, and maybe like catchinon said, one for an umbrella. Something to check into.

I will let ya know for sure, if I can hook into something other than baby cats Unsure. The umbrella idea sounds good, will have to look into that. Sure the wife would like it.

Last week I posted that I went home early because I could feel heat stroke coming on. Some might think I was kidding but I had a bad case a few years back while digging irrigation ditches and I know what it feels like. Once bitten ... So an umbrella is just about an essential for me when I'm out in the hot sun now. Problem is that the banks I fish from are very rocky so the sucker rod looks tough enough to take some beating on. What diameter is it?

What are the black tube holders adapted from?

The tubes are cut down from a 3 tube rod rack. Cut the 2 cross pieces that hold them together, leave just enough of the edges sticking out from the tubes. Then take 2 each 3 inch band clamps around the re-bar and the tube, inside the rectangular spaces left on the tube. Tighten down the clamps until it is snug, careful not to go tight enough to crack the tube. Place the tube at whatever height on the re-bar you are comfortable with that allows sufficient length to hammer into the bank, or wedge down into the rocks. Leave enough re-bar at the top to hammer on without hitting the tube.
The re-bar I used is 1/2". I bought 2 each 10 ft. lengths, cut them into 40" pieces with my chop saw, then angled the re-bar and cut a wedge point on the bottom. Easier than grinding it to a point.

Well, you saw the rod holders close up today. And when I moved on down the river to that spot just east of the 2 boulder point, one holder got a good check out. Big carp hit it and stripped off some line. The holder swayed a little but the force was absorbed by the rod and the drag. Worked quite well. Lost the carp at the bank but wasn't a total lose today, landed one small Bull Head...........Laugh And got to watch some working Cowboys wrangling some cows.
