I've done many tests on Cutler reservoir, the Bear river, and the Snake river in many different places and in many different conditions fishing sucker side by side with carp, chubs, redside shiners, and worms. The most consistent cutbait I have found after many years of doing this is the sucker meat. All of the others catch channel cats too obviously, but for me the sucker does consistently better than the others most times. There are days when for some reason the carp or chubs works better, but not often. Actually, if I were to reverse the rankings and go least effective bait/cutbait for channel cats to most effective it would be....

Least to most effective

1-Red side shiners
2-worms (most effective for mudcats and carp!)
3- shrimp
4-carp
5-whole or cut chubs (good 2nd choice bait)
6- cut, fresh sucker....best in my opinion.

Any of these work well for channel cats, but I try to be most efficient with my fishing time. If I don't have sucker then I'm confident with the others to produce a fish or three.

I have tried dip baits, punch baits, stink baits, liver, etc. and it seems to be good for SMALL channel cats, but very ineffective for large channel cats. Large channel cats are top level predators and want fresh meat. I've caught them with big mice and baby ducks in their stomachs and once at Newton reservoir I found one that was 29" washed up on shore in the process of dying with a 9" crappie stuck in its throat! I have noticed my catch rates decrease when using funky cutbait.

Just remember that even a blind squirrel will occasionally find a nut, but I don't want to hamstring my fishing opportunities fishing with blind squirrels....if you get my drift, haha!

Mike

I know most of you that use suckers, probably get them from a lake or pond or other body of water somewhere. But is there any place that may sell them? In the Davis, Weber, Box Elder Counties ?

A couple years ago I bought sucker fillets at Angler's Den in Roy but haven't been in there since then.
Might check Smith and Edwards I have seen a big bait freezer but haven't taken the time to see what's in it.

Bear Lake has some that can be caught along the east side or off the marina at times... I seen some in Heber in a freezer at the gas station as I was heading to strawberry... Other than that I don't know what to tell you Forest... Sorry I'm not a very good help... J

I've heard rumors that they run up the Provo river around June. Maybe that's not a good place to get them thoughWink

I mention it because there are probably less "protected" waters where they congregate to spawn about the same time of year.

Hey ya'll, thanks for the replies. I stopped in Sportsman's on Riverdale today. They have Chub and Sucker meat vacuum packed in a freezer. I know it may not be as good as fresh caught, but it's where I can get it. If it works, it will be worth the price. If not, well then I don't have to buy anymore...Wink Fishin'

Awesome fish ! I think that will put you within a 1/2 point of Ahi1953. Looks like it's going to be a Bear River Cat Battle this year. Good bump for Team North...Wink
Wife and I will be up on BRBR tomorrow.

What is the best bait to use for suckers? When I fish the Snake here in Blackfoot, I catch suckers on worms when I'm trout fishing. But when I want a sucker I can't seem to catch them. Does anyone have a good sucker bait?

I've caught most of mine on worms. Although I size them down and only use half a night crawler or less. I catch them on a garden worms (so I call them, I think they are angle worms) dug out of the garden, smaller than night crawlers, and catch them more often than with crawlers. I also use a smaller hook. I've caught them nymphing on my fly rod, with grasshoppers in the summer, and when a stonefly hatch is on, I've put a live one on the hook and caught them as well. I've caught them on wooly buggers during their spawn up at bear lake when they come near the shore. They can be extremely picky and not even touch a bait nearly tight under their nose. The best time to get them is during the spawn around the first part of June.

Looks like I have hit that wall Ice sled was taking about in the other thread. When finding a bumper fish is impossible. caught a 30 inch today. Wish it was a 25 inch at least I could have kept that for the smoker.

I had a work meeting today in Salt Lake. I knew I would have a little time after the meeting. I threw in my stuff, took a packet of frozen carp out of the freezer. I looked up on Google earth to try to identify a spot to fish on the lower part of the Jordan river. Found one I thought might hold fish and got bit...

I don't remember seeing fish from the Jordan river entered into the contest. Sorry you southern boys, I poached a fish from your area to add to my contest total.BlushWink Thank You!

That's pretty cool that you could pick a spot off the satellite and go catch a 30.5" fish.... Nice job, you better teach me how to pick locations I could use it... Congrats Jeff

Hey Jeff, this may be a bit late with you getting ready for the Flotilla tomorrow, but I think I finally got a camera that will take good Cat Contest shots, get the whole board and fish in, and not blur when it is enlarged. Check out the 2 attached new photos.

One of my new (this year) bump board, and one of the plain 48 inch metal rule I carry on the boat cuz the board takes too much room.

Tried before work yesterday, hoping maybe fishing in the dark or early light might bring a bump fish. Fishing was good with some very nice fish caught, but as Ahi and Ice_Sled have said, it gets tough to get one to better the score. Got a 29", a 26", a 25" and a 24". The females are just swollen right now and the 26" fought harder than the 29" male.

Just a caution to those headed to the lower Bear, BRING THE BUG SPRAY!!! Holy smokes, the skeeters are out, swarming, and hungry!

Saw Ahi as I was leaving, how did you do John?

caught a 27,and a 26 no bumpers . was a very warm day had to take off my wool Greek fisherman's hat and put on the light floppy fishing hat.
been a little under the weather last couple of days. and loos like the weather is going to be crap next few days. So I'm going to just recoup.

I caught some fresh bait on my lunch break today. So I gave myself 1 hour after work to try and catch something before I had to head home. I wish I could have stayed longer. 1st fish went 30" and I thought great, a bumper fish. Big nasty-headed male cat. But just a little while later upriver from where I caught the 1st, I got a 30.5". This was a big beautiful lady cat, heavy and thick. I left just after catching her and spent a total of 50 minutes on the river.

So John, is that trunk sort of like superman changes in the phone booth, and super catman changes in a trunk to save the day or catch the next chart topper?

(I assume siri helped ya out and changed truck to trunk, but thought I'd have a little fun with it...) Hope you get back on the water soon... Good luck.. J

Hey John, hope you get feeling better. Wife asked me Sunday if I had seen you last weekend. I told her I thought maybe I saw you parked back up that narrow gravel road on the north side of the road one day last weekend, but not sure.
Yea, I finally got up out of the Catfish basement, and the wife doubled her score with one Sunday.

I got a 4 day weekend coming this Friday, going back to the river. I'll sit in the truck if the weather is still wet and windy, but I did pretty good like that last weekend.
And I met jig-fisher while we were sitting in the truck at the boat ramp.
I see he just shaded up past you by a point. Gonna get tougher to get bump size Cats, but maybe I can get up close to you 2 guys score. I'm at the highest score I've had in 5 years of fishing this contest.

Hope to see ya out at the Bear this weekend.

Craig, you are only 2 points off my score. This is the best total Cat score I've had. But about now is where it starts getting more difficult to bump my score. I still have some upward mobility possible, but seems like that 85 to 90 point ceiling gets tougher every day. I would be happy to make it to the 90 point mark, and be up in that rarified air of the 2 leaders, but I think I would have to swipe one or two of John's or Paul's 32 inchers when they weren't looking.....
