Worst day ever at Strawberry
Fished the Strawberry side yesterday for Kokanee
I post the good days so may as well post the bad ones

I don't even remember getting a bite

three of us had 6 lines out 4 down riggers one planer board and one leaded line
on the east side so much moss could not keep it off your lures, not a lot of moss on the west side but still could not get any bites.

did not see a lot of Kokanee on the fish finder but Enough that would fully meet are demands.

got tired of changing lures and moving downriggers up and down.

did not want to go home with out catching a fish so put a rapala on the leadline and pulled a dink cut in.

I had real good company and flat water so the day was not a wast

Thanks for taking me out, Robert; I learned a lot about how to fish for them. In all fairness nobody else we talked to got any either. At first I thought I must be the jinx, but it was just one of those days. Ah well, just have to go again when conditions are better.

Wow, that is really strange. Sorry you had such a tough day. Seems to always happen to me when I have newbies (to the fish species we are chasing) with me that I want to get into fish.

I too went up yesterday to take my dog for a ride and try out a few new dodgers and squids I made following Roberts winter videos. I fished with planner boards, etc and fished from 5’ deep down to 45’ with my downriggers. Never had a bite. I saw Robert out nearby and wondered why I never saw him circle around or do any figure 8’s. I guess it makes sense now. No caught fish caught to circle over.

Just one of those days. Surface temps were around 47 and most of the water column around 40. Nice day on the water with not many boats. That will soon change tho!

Many post saw they see kokes here and there on their screens. My question is how certain is it you are seeing kokes. Ok when there is a thermocline and 52 degrees is at 25’ and one sees a lot of fish at 25’ its a good guess. I hear people talk a lot (and I have read) about a kokes air bladder being different, but I dont know? I have caught kokes when there was nothing on my screen, tons of fish on my screen and a few fish.

I have a Humminbird 959. I turn the gain up very high. At times there were fish all over. 5’, 25’, bottom. I guess at what I think are kokes, but isnt that what everyone is doing? Maybe its easier to guess when they are on the bottom vs. 25’, or when there is a single arch compared to a group?

But how do you know there isnt a school of cuts, chubs, rainbows, or the one you think is a single cut is really a koke? Arches do appear differently on ones screen depending on where the fish is in the cone??

Or does it make us feel better to say to ourselves that we see kokes in the screen?

I dont know?

I have a hunch that sometimes folks are chasing schools of chubs, thinking they are kokes. Those chub schools can be massive.

Robert, I didn't know you had worst days. I watched all day for Catchinon to post how well you guys did playing kokanee because I knew he was going with the best. Never figured on a bust.

I have been working for a few (2&6 koke days) over on the Soldier Creek side waiting for Strawberry to clear. Fishing SC has been pretty mossy, thought it seemed to me we found kokes under and near the moss. How about the water on Strawberry, was it still stained from the runoff? Looks like my next shot will be Monday - hope for decent weather.

Did they still have the pay stations covered? I called Utah Recreation Co yesterday and they said the camp hosts would be there Friday so I expect we will be paying to launch from then on.

I am sure yesterday was just a one of those days that reminds us why we call it fishing and not catching. Good days are to come. See you on the water this summer.

first off what kentofnsl just posted is right on

Just4fun has a lot of good question

(question is how certain is it you are seeing kokes)
it is a guess but having a $3000 fishfinder helps some and fishing for Kokanee a lot helps.

another one

(But how do you know there isnt a school of cuts, chubs, rainbows, or the one you think is a single cut is really a koke? Arches do appear differently on ones screen depending on where the fish is in the cone?? )

a few years ago some were posting they were seeing schools of kokes but could not catch them
I found out where they were fishing went and put my cameras down
and found thousand of Chubs

also like this
(Or does it make us feel better to say to ourselves that we see kokes in the screen? )

I read this one time. If you want to know what a fish looks like on your finder, tie a line on it turn him loose and watch the fishfinder. don't no if this is right I have never done it are not sure I want to

You just gave me a Idea
put the cameras down turn recording on. on my fishfiender, with time stamps on the cameras compare

will need to do this when I have 20' set backs so now is not a good time

I did make a 2 hr recording yesterday

I would stay on the SC side I know where the kokes are and you do to

it may of been a day when they were asleep

I did not ever look at the pay stations to see if it was covered

I don't see how they can charge till they get all the boat docks out of the parking lot

I just put my last year pass out

looks like a camp hosts trailer was there
I use to buy my pass on the SC side they were the first one there

Sorry about that, John, but I told the other guys I wouldn't post a report. I didn't know what to say. I learned a lot about rods and reels, dodgers, lures, bait and scents. I don't know the terminology well enough to report what all we used but it was practically everything Robert had and he has enough to stock a small fishing shop. Now I know how to use a downrigger and set up the rods, and a lot of other things specific to kokanee fishing so I won't be a raw beginner next time I go out.

I was up there yesterday also with my daughter hoping to get her her first kokanee we started out on the soldier creek side at about 645 in the morning and managed 1 rainbow then like everyone else motored over to the strawberry side and got 2 14" cutts in front of haws point was off the water at about 1 when the clouds turned grayish and looked like rain hopefully next Friday will be good weather so I can try again might of even talked to a few of you guys at the ramp as I was leaving

Wow - I am now fishing at the same level as you, Robert! We fished the Strawberry side on Monday for about 1.5 hrs. Noticed the water was murky and too much grass & weeds floating in the water - very difficult to fish. Caught no fish & didn't even have a strike that I know of.

We motored over to the SC side and caught 2 small cutts - 10 inchers. The water on that side is also stained; however, not as bad as the Strawberry side. We fished for about 3.5 hrs and called it a "busted day". Sure different than the previous Friday!

Im going to give it a week to 10 days for the water to clear up. I wished it would stay warm so the mid level snow would run off. The koke fishing is already a month off.

Hey Craig, don't be sorry for not posting, I understand. I had not even considered that you guys wouldn't be rocking the kokes. That was just an off day. It sounds like nobody found them. Even sounds as if SC didn't produce yesterday. As the water warms, it will get better.

Robert you can add me to the Kokanee skunked list. Trolled all day yesterday (wed) and only one Koke that decided to part company at the side of the boat. Tried all colors, speeds, depths, etc. can’t remember another time when zero kokes in boat. Some high wind so headed to narrows where we hooked several small cuts, one bow and one 19 1/2” cut. Interesting that water temp was only 41 @ SB, 51 @ places in narrows and 43 @ SC. Came off water @ 7:00pm with just the one bow. Looking forward to some warmer water soon. Hope to bump into you again soon. Trueblue2

Sounds like we have the same disorder! It can get expensive at times!

From my experience over the years it seems like the fishing at Strawberry is pretty hot for trout when the ice starts pulling away from the shore. But after the lake is completely free of ice the fishing totally turns off for a good month to 6 weeks. I don't totally fish for kokes so I can't give my 2 cents about them but maybe it holds true for them too. I also wonder if the approaching storms had an effect on the fishing. But most times the best fishing occurs just before a storm arrives and the barometer drops. Who knows it a craps shoot sometimes..

Sorry about the downer day. Happens to all of us. My ego-saving philosophy is "Ya gotta taste the bitter to appreciate the sweet". Or...to put it another way...it is good to have a bad day once in a while just to keep you humble. And it really does make you properly grateful for the really good days.

Saw this picture and just had to share it with you.
