Yes, Ben told me last year that getting to 80 was good but that it gets really hard as you try to get up to 90. My goal this year is 88, which is above last year's 86.5. I owe most of last year's success to our trimvirate--ice_sled, BLK, and Pisco--for taking me out fishing with them.

Better save some powder and dig in. North has some new recruits that are starting to get traction. Plenty of battle still to come

You southern boys have had it tough with the weather. Made it hard for you to get out on the water. The river up here really isn't affected and we can access even during the storms. Looking forward to see the southern charge.

The bite was really good this morning up North on the river.. Was able to steal away to fish for a little over an hour. Caught a 29.5" and then a great chunk at 31".

Hey Craig, we are now tied for 9th place Sly. If I had let Jeff give me that extra 1/2 point, I could have finally got ahead of ya.
I know, those score won't stay there for long. One of us will hook up a good bump size Cat. Good luck to ya.

And we've really got to keep an eye on Violet. She keeps bumping up ahead of us and if we don't watch out she'll get out of reach. Then there are several just below who could do big bumps at any time. We got to keep on keeping on because it ain't over till it's over or something like that. Good luck to you, too. You're having a very good year.

This comment thread has been pretty quiet last week or so. I hope it's because the southern team has been doing as poorly as I have...............Mad.

Seems like the Cat bite at the river got switched off. Have caught a few more carp, and saw a boat with 2 guys in it last Sunday on the Bear that had boated a nice walleye. I think they may have caught another one while we were anchored about 40 yards away at one of the irrigation gates.
I know John hasn't been on the river as often as normal. He's had his truck in the shop.

I have been to Willard 5 times this year, and skunked 5 times. I think I am gonna try to make it an even half dozen and get up there again Saturday. Unsure

I'm pretty sure the kitties have love on their mind right now on the river and aren't hanging in the usual spots. I tried yesterday late afternoon and only caught 2, a 24" and a 23". While there I had cats break the surface twice in water that is about 15 ft deep chasing each other around. Lots of structure in that area that spawning cats would be attracted to. One big dark male came clear out of the water like a porpoise. I did manage a 29.5 the end of last week in the same spot as the 2 I caught yesterday that went 10 lb 11 oz. I finally bought a digital scale. In another thread Catchinon posted a scale of length and approximate weights of cats. That chart was almost dead on showing that a 29.5 inch fish should weight 10.5 lbs.

In a couple of weeks I think the cats will start moving back into their former haunts and should be hungry.

Oh man sounds like I'm out of luck for this year if the spawn is underway now... Seems like after the spawn I can't find the big ones for the rest of season... Dang farming always shuts down my cat contest hopes and dreams... Oh well it was fun while it lasted anyway... Don't have time to fish now anyway... Maybe get a day in around the end of the month I hope... Later J

Hey Jeff, don't go out of your way, but if you think of it would you let me know when the dock is out at Benson?
Wife and I will be off last 2 weeks of June and would like to make a trip or 2 up there before it starts getting too shallow.

Much appreciated.

Forest I sent you a text last week showing the docks are in place. If you didn’t get that, then yes they are in the water and ready to use. Good luck. Jeff

Truck is back. Still not running 100% but good enough to get me to the river. Only Thing is the fish have slowed way down. Lots of little bait stealing babies. with an occasional 20+ incher.

Hey, John, it's good to see you are back in business again. I know what you mean about the fishing, though. Jig-fisher was gracious enough to take me along last week so I could see what you guys were talking about on the Bear. I caught nothing but had a bunch of nibbles on one big piece of fish meat. My rod tip kept jiggling and I would get excited, but nothing latched on. When I pulled the bait in it looked like a bunch of mini sharks had been chewing it up.

John, nice to know you are back. I am now on my 3 weeks of vacation, but prior engagements today and tomorrow. We went up to Benson yesterday, didn't snag up your pole Crazy . I think we will be getting out on Willard, Wednesday morning. Maybe back to the river Thursday.

Craig, thats' the difference between fishing the river and Utah Lake. River flow and growth on the bottom will many times cause the fishing pole to act differently.
You can get your line set just so with bait where you want it, and the rod tip will almost constantly jiggle, and tap, and even bend a little. That can be water flow bouncing it on the bottom in vegetation, or small fish pulling at the edges of the bait.

Most of us that fish the river regularly for Cats, use large hooks, with big chunks of bait. The small fish nibble and tug at it, but when a Cat of more size takes it, the rod bends over and the drag screams. And then sometimes it turns out to be just a log floating down river...............Wink

I'm glad you're back. It was like you just disappeared for a while. Fishing has definitely been tough for fish of any size. The river is still really high. Been thinking of getting my boat on it to see if I can drum up something away from the heavily fished areas. Good luck and go team north!

OK Jeff, read your post on the current standings. Here are a few good reasons, maybe, that south team is so far ahead of north in total fish.

More of the south members are Retired and can get out during the week when the other traffic on the water is lighter. Wink

The larger body of water of Utah Lake provides multiple areas to find Cats, and provides a good cut bait source (White Bass). Can't legally use cut WB on any other body of water.

The most productive northern body of water seems to be Bear River, from Cuttler to the Bird Refuge. Lots of water there, but not as accessible to many of the northern team. Lots of Private land along those banks, lots of Posted NO TRESPASSING, or not accessible Federal Wildlife land.

And yet, I believe the state record Catfish is from the north area, and the contest winners for several of the last few years have been northern team members.

No matter. We on both teams will do the best we can in the waters we have available. And enjoy the back and forth good natured trash talking Sly.

That said, the wife and I are planning a weekend trip to UL this Fri-Sun with every intent of poaching the biggest cats we can find. She needs a 3rd for her post, and I need a good bump. Wink
