Have any of you tried this.
I did some searches on Google yesterday on turning your sonar transducer to the side instead of straight down. I found some pretty good info about it. I been thinking of giving it a try in shallower water and aiming it toward the bank.

Just wondering if anyone on here has tried this and the results that they got.

I have tried it with several models...and know others who have too. Don't work. Anytime you do not have a straight shot against a reasonably level bottom the screen goes wacko. Sonar readings depend on signals being bounced back and measuring the time to record images. Can't do that on a slanted or sloping bottom when shot from the side. At least it has never worked for me or anyone else I know.

If you want side scanning, invest in a unit that provides it.

Thanks for the reply. Some of the info that I read yesterday said that when they placed the transduser on a 30 degree angle that it worked for them. And they also said that they had DI (down imaging). While others had said that it did not work for them. Years ago (my first sonar) was a 'Bottom Line Fishing Buddy II'. The side imaging was nice but when looking down the cone angle was so small that in water 20ft of water you were only seeing about a 3' circle of the bottom. The main reason I wanted to see to the side was trying to find Crappie schools. SI has it's advantages but don't know if the cost is worth it. I bought 2 new units last year, one for my Bass Tracker and one for my Sea Eagle. Both have DI but maybe I should have spent the extra fun tickets and got SI.

I have been using and observing others' sonar systems since the early days of the paper graphs. It has been amazing to see the advances in technology over the years. Some of the options today were completely beyond even our wildest imaginations a few years ago. But...like many of our new electronic gadgetry innovations...the latest wrinkles can be spendy. And as a general rule, you really do get what you pay for.

However, if budget is an issue...and if you have some good (gullible) fishing buddies...you might try this.

LOL, that's a good one. I could probably talk one of my grandkids into doing that....they are young enough to not tell me where to go.

Lucky you. Mine not only tell me where to go, but how to get there.
