Flaming gorge/greens lake help?
Hi all, I am camping at greens lake for the next week and have never been to the gorge area before. Hoping to find a few spots to get my boy on some fish, but we’re probably not going to have a boat. Haven’t decided whether we’re renting one or not.

He’s new to fishing(he’s only 3) but I got him a rod for the trip and he’s super excited. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. We’re going to be chucking bait, then I plan on trying my luck at greens lake with my fly rod in the evenings. Leaving Wednesday morning, will post a follow up when we get back

We did well in the spring just few hundred yards north of the sheep cheek boat launch. Used worms for rainbows. Also caught some off spinners on the anvil boat launch.

Thanks! We’ll try those areas for sure. Any thoughts on bass up there?

To catch bass, go down to cedar springs marina (ten minutes from greens lake). There is a nice cove behind the fish cleaning station. You can park and walk down to it. Lots of bass in there. You can also catch rainbows.

While up there I recommend eating at the red canyon lodge, and driving up the road to the visitor center.

There is also a new fishing pier over by the dam. When you are at Red Canyon Lodge, there is a little kids free fishing pond 20ft away from the restaurant patio. In the gift shop they sell bags of fish pellets for 25-cents each. My son loved throwing them in and watching the fish go into a feeding frenzy. The gift shop also sells a fly that is shaped like a fish pellet with a orange indicator on top. If you aren't catching fish on the gorge, I guarantee your kid will catch a fish in that little kids pond, if he uses that fly after he had thrown in the real pellets. .

Moose Pond is also a good place to take kids. When you head out of Red Canyon, just take a right going towards Manila and it's only a few minutes down the road on the left. It's planted with rainbow trout and even has tagged fish in it for Fishing with the Fox, and summer long tag fish contest. Bait, spinners, and spoons have been working well there.

On the Gorge near the dam, smallmouth bass have been very active and can be easily caught from shore. Someone mentioned Cedar Springs and the fishing pier at Dam Point, but also try Mustang Ridge and Sunny Cove just north of Dutch John. Ned rigs have been working really well, but you could also put a small jig under a bobber for you son and keep him entertained.

Good luck!

Thanks to all for the info! Had a few weather issues so the little man wasn’t really interested, but he at least got excited when I would bring one in. Only one pic. Just a little rainbow
