I know of at least four guys who haven't posted good fish because they forgot their placards. So far I have avoided that because I keep mine with my camera. But I think that ice_sled has the best idea. He has shrunk his down to wallet size and laminated it so it's always with him. Sure makes the fish look huge beside it, though he doesn't need help that way.

Too bad they didn’t post anyway, I’ve been known to give mulligan’s. Hey thanks for covering for me I’m working on that water line and 16 hour days on a backhoe don’t leave much time to check in here. But I’m getting close to having that big job behind me.

Oh I do like the wallet cards too. My other one gets forgotten as well. Later J

Did you all read that? I think he means that you should, in an emergency, take a picture without the placard and submit it for judging.

We reduced our placards to about 8x5 and laminated them. Made 2 copies of each. Put a copy in Cat fishing Tackle bag and a copy in the boat tackle box.
Never thought about reducing to wallet size. May have to try that and see how it comes out.

The river is at mid-summer level now. Barely moving in the lower reaches and the lower canals are shut off. But the good news is that the nicer ones have started feeding again. I caught a 23" and a 26" after work for a stint. They were very shallow but at least willing to play. The 26" was a spawned out female and very healthy. I was good to have some decent sized fish pulling the line again.

There were quite a few fish that were active Saturday and Sunday. Then Monday everything shut down. Gave Tuesday a break. Going to give it a try this morning as soon as I finish my coffee.

Just got home from the river. Saw John, don't think he had caught anything as of the last time I saw him. I broke my skunk, finally Unsure

Got 2 small cats at the duck ramp with a worm under a bobber. Was hoping for a carp, running low on bait. But carp still seem to be more interested in spawning than eating. The big rocky spawn bed at the bottom gate now has more water coming thru the gate and the carp have spread out.
Tried to snag one just before I left, but the wasp swam chased me off Mad.

I'm still getting my bait out of the Malad river. Usually pretty quick and easy to pick up a fish or two for bait. Although with the water dropping so much, this last time I went the suckers weren't there. So carp it is for now for fresh bait.

Hoping to get a big one tonight and maybe some good eating size for a fish fry.

Turned out to be a pretty good outing. The cloud cover had them feeding early and the first fish was a 29", 10lb 9 oz beauty. Unfortunately I hooked her too deep and she was bleeding out the gills when I got her in. So she came home with me. A couple of fish later I got a big, beat up, hog head of a male that went just over 30". He had a huge gash in his abdomen that was pretty nasty, plus two wounds on his back, he was pretty thin, but his head was 7" across. I could have stuck my fist in his mouth. The last fish of the night went just over 28" and pulled like a 30+. Ended up landing 10 cats and took home a limit. We are going to have family over for a fish fry and will have enough left over to do a batch in the smoker as well.

When I was loading the truck just after 11 pm a young conservation officer pulled up behind me to check the fish and license. He was extremely nice. He mentioned that it was the first full limit of cats he had ever checked on the river in the 2 years he has been working out there. I mentioned BFT and he said he sees you out there all the time and just waves at you and doesn't bother checking your license.

Great night for ya Paul. Was that officer a state DNR ranger or a Federal Wildlife officer ? I have met a couple of both, and now they just drive past, honk and wave when I'm out there. I think once they get to know you and your vehicle, and know you are a BFT member, they know you are doing things right and legal. That's good publicity for BFT. Now if they stop where I'm at, they just ask how I'm doing, shoot the breeze awhile and move on.

That big black male cat you caught really looks like he's been thru a rough spawn season.

He was the federal officer. I followed him out and he pulled in the refuge headquarters up close to I-15.

That 30 incher is one skinny cat. Sure would like to see a few of the long ones down in Utah Lake (tomorrow would be soon enough).Smile

I keep thinking that the South is going to post some 30+ any day. I wish you luck tomorrow!

That cat was very skinny. The big gash in the abdomen went all the way into the stomach cavity. I was surprised it was still alive. But he swam away strong.

Hey Paul, glad to see you and John are catching some cats... was getting worried that only the south was catching anything lately.. Rumor has it my pipe line is in, so I might be able to get back out after a kitty some day soon... Man it's been since early May since I've been out, so I doubt I'll be able to catch anything, but sure want to try again.. Hope I can figure out how to tie into something.. Thanks for the updates so now I'm excited to go try it again... Later J

John, did you ever make it out to the river on a night trip? I'm thinking about heading up there today after work since I'm off tomorrow. Maybe stay until just about dark or a little after cuz the next several days are going to be HOT.

Sorry for the late reply Forest.
I've made a few night runs. Slow out there day or night. At the ramp Thursday night only one 28 inch after midnight. nothing the rest of the morning stayed until 2 am. lots of bugs.

Last night at the whistlers bend only one hard bite lots of little taps. Water there is very low. call it a skunk at 1 am. had a little wind kept the bugs down.
thinking of trying the ramp again tonight.

Hey John, no problem. River has pretty much shut down for me. Went up late morning Friday, took home a big skunk. Stayed home Saturday due to the unsettled weather report, bout 4 p.m. I was glad I did. Thunder, lightning, wind, and rain.......you would have thought that Clearfield was having it's very own TS Barry.......Unsure
Wife and I took the boat out to Willard north yesterday. Weather was nice, she caught 1 small Perch and 1 cookie cutter Cat. Kept the Cat and took home for dinner. I took home another skunk........Mad That was my 8th trip to Willard this year, with a perfect 8 big ZEROS.

Hard to believe it has been 10 days since the last Cat Contest Standings update. Guess the recent heat is driving the bigger cats into whatever deeper pools they can find.
Gonna try the river again this weekend, early, like just at daybreak. If I can get up that early.....Unimpressed

I agree with you Forest. Never seen such a slow time for the contest since I have been involved. I have been catching some cats when the wind is behaving. But I can't catch a bump up fish to save my life. I have not had a fish to enter in the contest since May 25th. I seem to be caught in the 27" range. Just like previous years I have hit the wall again. Maybe things will get better. I just want to see anybody; North or South post some nice kitties.
