Pretty much the whole state is in those perfect conditions for someone to get too brave and fall in sometime in the next couple weeks. Even Huntington and Scofield are just getting down to 20 degrees or so at night and going above freezing for a few hours a day.

Have you been to these bodies of water or just from reports? i was there on sunday and it was - 7 at 7 am and when we left at 3 pm it was only 18 out......

Changed my post here. When I looked at the weather on Monday, it showed the temps being just above freezing at Mantua for +12 plus hours a day into almost the whole 10 day forecast. The ice being 3" or less most places makes that somewhat of a unpredictable situation. Glad things are actually better than I was thinking there though!

There were people on Mantua when I drove by this afternoon. Truck said it was 37 out. Not sure how accurate my truck temp is. Lots of open water. Not sure it's ready for me. They can have the first bite.

It looks like someone has plowed snow and built a berm on both of the roads that lead to the north east parking lot. I know they have done this in years past but its been a few years since they have done so. Does anyone know if either road is considered a public road? Im wondering the legality of doing this. Its clearly intentional.

I haven't launched from the NE corner in several years, but do remember the berm being there several times I looked. I use a snowmobile or walk on from the boat ramp or south shore so don't have an interest in running it down. If you truely want the factual answer, I would suggest starting with the Box Elder Road Department and work through the bureaucracy until you find who actually does the plowing for Mantua. Face book posts last night reported ice thickening at Mantua. The post had contrasting opinions on depth and stability, but sounds like people were on it fishing. They reported both trout and perch pickups. I am still fine waiting for Jeff's prediction of weather this next week to add some stability to the situation

Hey I've been seeing folks fishing the west side all week and keep thinking about trying it, but I know next week will put some good safe stuff in place so by the 20th to 21st I'm sure it will be game on... I think if you're off mid week that Tuesday or Wednesday should be where I'd consider it safe especially since they are already on it fishing... But I haven't had time to try it anyway so I've been okay staying away till it's 4"... I'll probably miss the good bite on there this year, but it happens...

Wpahole, I don't know who does the plowing either and years past we didn't have as much snow and I busted through the berm and drove up there, but I honestly didn't like fishing out of that spot anyway and so I try the south road myself, and it's not too terrible far if you want to walk over to that NE bay.... I found it (NE bay)so shallow before that I didn't do great (mostly perch and bluegill and small LMB in the spot I fished), I mean I got fish, but nothing too exciting over there... I like to fish the 11' deep area and I think that NE area was only 5-6' deep where I was fishing and the weeds were so thick, it was hard to find an area where the fish were moving through.. I'm sure others are glad I pointed you away from their favorite area, but I didn't really like it the times I've fished that side... (One exception is when the south and west get too packed with people, then it's a good spot to escape the crowds and the fishing should treat you better then.) Good luck... J

I bet it'll be cold enough next week for me to just drive over it. :)

(The berm, I mean.)

I think they taper off but still going a little I expect. Mike or Scott can probably tell you better than I can though. If they are done the trout will still be around. Good luck. Jeff

I am one of those guys that posted to facebook on the Utah local Anglers page. The ice is really varied in thickness. A spud bar is a good way to make your way across the ice to make sure you step doesnt send you into those frigid waters. Sometimes the bar went through with just two strikes, other times it took six to seven strikes. Mantua can be scary even when its considered safe. I posted the pic with the perch. Always check the ice, especially on Mantua.'
