I caught this fish today in Oak Orchard Creek today at Point Breeze... right next to lake Ontario....

Any ideas? I have had some opinions, but want to hear yours!

To me it looks like a planter 'bow that was duped by a krokadile that is almost as big as it.

It looks like a rainbow trout except for the tail. hmmmm I'll get back on this one.

thinks it is a newly stocked Coho salmon.

so... whatcha think.

Looks like a trout species to me. What I find even more interesting is that the prey is half the size of the predator.

A local bait shop owner has pretty much confirmed it was a coho...
along with other local fishermen to the area. And they do not think it was a snag. They said these little fish are aggressive feeders!

now what's lonehunter's favorite type of fall, winter and spring fishing ?
that's right , steelhead !
more than likely it's a plant or a small guy that chose to stay in the river rather than hit the big water . the last one i saw cought was at tippy dam on michigans west side of the lower penisula , 22pounds , 6 oz. .
most steelhead we get are in the 12 lb. range today , but in years past it wasen't uncommon to get them in the 17 lb. range . shows you what kind of fishing pressure these fish are up against .

looks like a salmbow to me but i would need to have the fish to know for sure

Looks like a goldeye to me. We have tons of them up here in our rivers and creeks.

Hey fishermom i would say it is a small coho salmon

I found out that it IS a baby COHO salmon!

The mystery was solved a few days
after I posted this by a local guy.
he said they had just stocked some cohos this size

I would have to agree with ya now, I looked at some goldeyes again and realized that they have standout scales, the fish you have has smooth skin.

Y'know, after taking a closer look, I'd say it's probably a Coho Salmon.

LOL....

Yes that is a Shad. Never caught one on a pole before but that is what it is. I use them to catch White cat on the Osage River at Truman Lake in the coming season. I have snagged one on a treble hook like you did when fishing for game fish though.
