week's 20-pound rainbow is a preview
of what's coming to SARL!

A huge 20-pound, one-ounce rainbow trout was caught by Joe Nguyen of
Montclair on a Kastmaster at Santa Ana River Lakes this week, but lake
operators Bill Andrews and Doug Elliott say even bigger fish are on the

"We've got at least a couple of fish coming that we feel will break our
lake record of 23.2 pounds and set a new state record," said Doug Elliott.

The current state record for inland rainbow trout is listed as 23 pounds
caught in Lake Natoma in January. Prior to January this year, the
California Department of Fish and Game did not recognize the distinction
between steelhead and inland, landlocked rainbow trout, so the previous
SARL lake record of 23.2 pounds was never certified for state record
status. That is all likely to change, perhaps as early as next week.

"We've made arrangements with Mt. Lassen Trout Farm to search their ponds
and find us some fish that can break and create a new state record. Mt.
Lassen says they think they can do it, and they will do everything
possible to locate and ship the largest fish they have," said Elliott.

The plant of huge rainbows, and thousands of pounds of other fish, will be
made the afternoon of Dec. 24, after the lake closes for the holiday at 2
p.m. Since the lake will be closed Christmas day, anglers will not have a
shot at the monstrous rainbows until Tuesday, Dec. 26, when the lake

"The kids will be out of school, it's a holiday week, so don't miss the
opportunity to catch the trophy trout of a lifetime," said Elliott. "Maybe
your son or daughter will be the lucky one to own the new state record."

don't have to wait until next week to catch a nice stringer of trout,
a trophy fish, or a tagged trout worth cash or prizes. The ongoing
Christmas Tagged Fish Extravaganza features cash and prizes, and the
parade of trophy trout and nice limits has been impressive.

In the past week, there have been 32 trout topping the 10-pound mark, and
besides Nguyen's 20-pounder, there were three other rainbows in the
18-pound class landed. Two were nearly identical 18-pound, two-ounce fish
caught by Palmer Wright, Los Angeles, and Johnny Perez, Montclair. Both
were taken on small jigs. Dennis Uselton, Westminster, landed an 18-pound
even rainbow fishing Power Bait.

big fish include a 16-pound, five-ounce rainbow caught by Larry
Lirette, Fullerton, who also had an 8-4 rainbow, and a 16-pound even trout
landed by Geoffrey Gieseman, Fontana. Dave Nelson, Calabasas, landed a
15-13 rainbow, while Danny Aguirre, Los Angeles, caught a 15-2.

The six trout in the 14-pound class were caught by Reuben Miller, Pomona,
with a 14-8, David Burrows, Placentia, with a 14.3, Andy Dulusa, Yorba
Linda, with a 14-2, and trout that went 14-pounds even by Al Mangano,
Glendora, Amber Goodwin, Orange, and John Martinez, Fontana.

The Christmas Tagged Fish Extravaganza continues through Dec. 24. There is
no entry fee for this event, other than paid entrance into the lake, but
anglers must have a free Turner's Outdoorsman validation, available at any
Turner's store in Southern California.

As a reminder, Santa Ana River Lakes will be closed from 2 p.m., Sunday,
Dec. 24 through Christmas day. It will reopen for regular hours on
Tuesday, Dec. 26. For more information, call the lake's information line
at (714) 632-7830.
