What would you consider to be the best tasting fish? Fresh or saltwater.


To me, it's a tie. Wahoo, Shark, and Cobia. Wahoo makes the best Sashimi and is just amazing baked in the oven. Shark is the king of the grill with boneless white meat fillets. And Cobia is good anyway you cook it; grilled, baked, or fried.

Personally, I think salmon tastes the best. We just started buying wild salmon after seeing this whole documentary that was basically about how nasty farm raised fish are. Wild salmon tastes noticeably different and very good.

I personally love salmon but my personal favorite is Yellowtail. Yellowtail is great for sushi, sashimi and you can even cook it if you have too.

Sorry guys the best eating fish has to be walleye. My wife hates fish and sea food, but you put unfrozen walleye in front of her and she loves it. I have to admit she hasn't had to much salt water fish but if it taste like fish at all she wont eat it. :)

I don't eat fish so I couldn't tell you. But I have a friend that will eat Northern Pike before they eat anything else.

My favorite has to be steelhead, rubbed with a light layer of mayo and lemon pepper, then cooked over a fire. Don’t get me wrong, the grill is ok but over a fire it is twice as good. It almost tastes smoked. It is so good that way you can put it in the refrigerator and eat it days later cold.

Haddock for me. Can't get enough of it.

Having never tried fresh salt water fish, i will have to say theat my current personal favorite is walleye.

Our limit is 25 per person per day. With no more than 2 limits in posession at any time.

Some people stock their freezers full of them. I would rather eat them fresh.

I agree. I won't buy fish from the super market, and I don't like frozen fish, unless it's only a couple of weeks old. Personally, I'm not a blue gill fan. I prefer the beautiful boneless, skinless fillets of saltwater species. I hate bones. I like to be able to plant my fork in and chew, not be cautious. I use blue gill for catfish bait.

I too would rather have a big saltwater, bonless fillet on my plate. I just had some nice red snapper and salmon grouper for dinner last night. yummmmmmmmy.

25 per day my way with a two day possion limit.

and my gills are both skinless and boneless....

proper preperation I can store gills in the freezer up to two years and you cant tell the differance from frozen to todays catch.

I am not a real big fan of salt water fish, I do like a few species but to eat more than onece a year other than tuna and cod I prefer gills crappie perch then walleye in that order.....

no secreates here,

use a stainless steel or glass bowl, plastic if you havent the other, mason jar or crock pot works well too.

1. place 1/8 teaspoon of salt in a bowl and half fill with cold water.
2. fill with fillets
3. soak at least one hour, over night best.
4. rinse fish out with fresh cold water, you will know when you have rinced enuff because the slimy fealing will be just about all gone.
5. in ziper lock bags (size depends on the amount you want for dinner plans) half fill with fillets. (freezer bags work best but zip lock sandwich bags will do just fine.
6. fill the rest of the bag with water
7. when closing the bag be sure to do it over the sink and make sure you have all the air out of the bag when it is sealed.
8. lay flat on your freezer shelf.

not only will they last longer when frozen in water they stack up pretty good.

Note if you ever poke a hole in the plastic by droping the bag, well, it is fish for dinner soon....

the plastic will protect it from frezer burn just so long as the ice gets no air.....

when you take your fish out again repeat the salt rinse process and you will have fresh fish once again.... no one in your house will not know the differance... In addition I am a clean food freek, if some one touches my plate let alone put some thing in my plate from thier plate I have a fit and wont eat any thing. so give them fish a bath... bathe them before you freeze them and bathe them before you cook them....

you can do this with any fresh water fish... I havent tryed it on salt water fish.

I don't mean to interrupt, but the way I was taught to freeze fish is to fully submerge them in water while freezing.

I have had frozen fish in the past although it is not my favorite when I can bring home enough fresh for the week in a days trip.

1. Save a 1/2 gal milk carton or use a large ziplock bag.

2. Add fish to desired level.

3. Fill the rest with water until there is no more air in the container. (You may need to squeeze the ziplock while closing the zipper seal)

4. Place bags or containers in the freezer.

5. Remove at a later date, defrost and cook according to your favorite recipe or try one of thousands from the Recipe Board

Thanks for all the tips on freezing fish. They'll certainly come in handy the next time I decide to chill a fishy or two. I don't freeze many fish myself, as I prefer fresh as many of you do.

Since I don't eat salt-water fish on a regular basis, my comments are limited to freshwater fish. The other day my sons and I caught a 26" walleye out of Utah Lake, took it home, and ate it the same evening. That was one of the best fish I've ever eaten.

As others have stated here, I believe bluegill are quite tasty, too. I'd say that just about any popular freshwater game fish (i.e., walleye, bluegill, bass, trout, etc.) can be made into a very tasty dinner if it's prepared and cooked well soon after it's caught.

There's something very satisfying to me to dine on something I've caught, prepared, and cooked myself.
