What's the first spring fish you'll be targeting?
Although there is still some good ice fishing left for many, some of us are looking forward to spring fishing.

This brings up a couple of questions:

Where are you?

What is the first spring fish you'll be targeting?

What type of gear set up will you be using?

I myself plan to target multiple species here in Northern Utah.
I plan on going after Wipers, Tiger musky, and Lake Trout.
Wiper fishing will be some trolling and casting. Musky mostly trolling , and Lake Trout will be trolling and jigging .
Hoping to get some real size this year.

As you know in SoCal, Spring officially begins on March 1st when Rockfish Season opens.Smile

I will continue to target LMB in the local lakes and maybe some cats too.

As far as Saltwater goes, Rockfish, Sheepshead, Calico Bass, Sand Bass, Spotted Bay Bass, WSB, YT, Blue Shark, Hammerhead Shark as well as many more of the freaky species that I enjoy catching.

The gear will vary from 12lb set ups to to 40lb set ups.Cool

Well, asside from my more prefered target of saltwater species, my primary freshwater target are Large Flathead Catfish. I'm in South Carolina, close to the Murrells Inlet area. Spring is good because that's when the Bream and other flatfish start moving back towards the shallows, the water is warming up, and the flathead's appitite begins to grow. I especially love it when the catapillars start comming around, that particular time of year just seems to be the best for both huge bream and monster flatheads.

My rig of preference is a simple Carolina rig which consist of an Egg sinker, a swivel to keep the weight off of the leader, a 24 inch leader and a 7/0 circle hook with a titty bream on the other end. I prefer my Abu Garcia 6500's for the brutes, spooled with only 20 pound test. Alot of anglers use 40 pound line, to me, that's just a little too much. If you're a skilled enough angler, and don't use cheap equipment, 20 or 25 pound line is plenty.

Here in southwest Kansas I will be going after largemouth but will settle for crappie, walleye, channel, flathead bluegill or whatever will bite. As for gear I use what ever my boys are catching all the fish with.

I haven't made up my mind yet, but I think that I will probably go for trout, but I may try to get some bass or walleye.

In a couple of weeks I'll be chaseing some stripers with plastics and maybe a couple tubenworms. Thames River seems to fill up with them. With the water so cold it's about the only game in town till it warms up a bit. Then its the lgmouth with some trolling for trout mixed in this year.

Well, here in Utah I will be targeting the walleyes with different colored plastics. Depending on which lake I venture to, I have the opportunity to also pick up some wipers and white bass.

i don't really know.the pic dosn't really show the true size of these lures

if you made a smaller version,it might work.the stripers and bluefish go crazy over these bait out in long island sound

I wouldn't see why a guy couldn't downsize it to suit a specific need. I have some colored gas line for my mowers, I may have to make one and try it when the water warms up a bit. Do you fish them like they are or do you add bait on the end?

We fish them with a sandworm or plastic eel on the bottom. Trolling about 2mph and letting it just touch the bottom. Let us know if it works for any sweet water fish. You may be on to something.

Brown trout, chinook, and coho are my targets as soon as the ice is off the launch on Lake Ontario. I just started fishing for these species last year and I"m hooked. I usually fish out of Oswego, NY. I also fish for tiger musky, bass, walleye, and northern pike on the various lakes in the area once the season opens up on them. I just enjoy getting out on the water. Come on Spring!!!Wink

After a few weeks of bunny hunting, it ends at the start of April here in wyoming, I'm going to go after kokanee and rainbows on the flaming gorge. I will be long lining dodger and worm harnesses, as the kokenee will be right up near the surface. If they aren't hitting I'll go deep for smallmouth bass with some soft plastic grubs that I pour myself, rigged on a 3/8 jig head. LBD
