Google Maps - A cool way to add more dynamic functionality to your site
Has anyone tried using the Google Maps API to write some active content for their site?

I am actually in the process of creating a Google Map page that marks fishing destinations in Utah with a marker, and when you click on it you will see info about that lake/river, and then you can click a link to go to the page about that water.

It is still under developement right now, but I will post a link to it when I am finished.

Anyone else done anything like this? Have any ideas/tips for cool uses for google maps?

Ok, so I have made a lot of progress on the google maps page I have been making.

Here is the link:

I have made three different colors of "pushpins", each for a different type of water (lake, river, and urban pond). I also have made it so if you click on a pushpin, a window pops up so that you can see a small photo and a short description of that water.

This can be very useful for all sorts of things. You could make a map of your advertisers' businesses, so people can click and find them, where they are located, and more information about them.

You could make a map where you mark different spots on a lake that are good bass fishing holes, etc. There are endless possibilities, and it is very easy to use and create your own map.

Go to www.google.com/apis/maps to find out more and sign up. I'm really glad I did.

I'll be adding even more stuff to my map in the future, and I'll keep you posted. If anyone wants to see the source code for my map, just reply here and I will post it or pm it to you.

Kevin

I tried:

I get the map OK, but don't see any markers. I moved the locator box around your fine state, and still no markers.

Hmmmm?

Hmmm... I just tried it with both Firefox and Internet Explorer, and it works fine for me.

Do you have javascript disabled?

There is another map I have been developing as well:

http://www.utahfishinginfo.com/maps/utahlakemap.php

It will have directions to different marinas on the lake, as well as fishing spots and boat ramps marked when it is done.

Nope. JS fully enabled.

I get this map OK, too. I do see some "extras" wich are red lines which I take to be roads/paths showing access points, but I don't see any "markers".

It's quite odd. On the "karppy" little 6 year old D3LL laptop it comes up fine, but on my "powerhouse", it's still an essentially dead map. I don't see anything in my logs in any of my browsers (FF1.5.07, Ov9, IE6), on either machine that suggest where the "problem" might be. The only significant difference that pops to mind is that my "powerhouse" is fully Service Packed from Microsoft, and the laptop (which is working fine) has no patches. I have had experiences with MS patches before that killed various types of "content" in the name of "security", but these issues were usually confined to Infernal Exploder, er, Internet Explorer. (No, I was right the first time.)

Agreed on the Internet Exploder thing. lol

My machines are powerhouses as well, and always kept fully patched with the latest patches, so it must be something else.

Well, I think I'll have to throw up my hands on that one! I haven't been working much on my site for awhile, been too busy with other things, but I should be getting back into it now.

Thanks again for checking.
