Fishing

Years ago I started running a couple feet of lighter furocarbon line on a swivel below my heavier main line. That sort piece of lighter line breaks off on a snag and leaves that expensive p line in my reel. It also keeps me from losing a bunch of line that as we all know gets caught up in all sorts of fish and game. Its a small hassle but worth it. Some thing to consider. Dan

Thanks Kent, I might just take you up on that offer. I'm not sure when I will go again because of these high gas prices but now that I know you and Joe are using Dacron, maybe there is some hope for me getting one of those big boys up to the boat. What kind of knot do you use for tying your line?

Not a bad idea; however, no one on my boat has snagged up while fishing for sturgeon the last two trips. I have found if I check the bottom out with my fish finder, or go to previous GPS waypoints I can avoid that nasty volcanic rock up there. If I am fishing a snaggy area I will do as you suggested; however, I continue using my heavier leaders and the lighter line is only attached to the weight from the sinker slider that I always use on my sturgeon rods.

That is the knot. I use 5 or 6 wraps. I use that knot more than any other. I also use the double uni-knot to tie two lines together.

Sportman's Warehouse has braided dacron in bulk spools, and they sell it to me by the foot. The Twin Falls store has it if you need some, it's a 30 minute stop on your way up. I bet the site's sponsors have it too.
Dan is a great guy isn't he? We've known each other for over 20 years. Next time you guys head up, holler. I'll show you a trick (or spot) or two...

Thanks Joe, I met Dan a year ago at work and after I found out he was a fisherman we started hitting the lakes in this area on a regular basis, even ice fishing during the winter. I thought I was a talker until I met Dan, LOL. Yea, he's a good guy all right. Dan wants to get up there again this fall but we will have to wait and see what the gas prices do, we will let you know for sure. I tried getting dacron at the local Sportsman's Warehouse before I came up last week and they had nothing over 25 pounds. I'll get some before our next trip up there, even if I have to order it. What kind of knot do you use to tie your leader and how much line do you usually have on your reel? I put 150 yds of 65 lb braided line on my reel but wasn't sure if that was enough. I was using 50 lb braided line for leader. When I lost the only big fish I had on, it felt like the knot came undone, if it broke, it must have happened at or near the hook. I had the fish on for a few minutes and it made a few runs before it got off, so I don't think the drag was set too high.

Curt, I am obviously not Joe, but I would fill the reel up with line. It is a long trip up there to have a large sturgeon spool you before being able to get the boat ready to follow the fish. The largest I have landed is 90 inches and it was really close being able to get the boat going before I was spooled.

That was what I was thinking, not that I would need it for every fish but I would be sad indeed if that fish of a life time came a calling and I wasn't ready.

I wish I would of had Kents 80# and 80# setup on my pole saturday I would probably have a photo of my biggest sturgeon. As it was he snapped my 50# leader.

Was your leader mono or braided line?

My leader was mono. Main line power pro braid. Like the power pro because of its small diameter.

I use an egg loop to tie my hook on. Sometimes the loop can be handy in holding on the bait. For the leader to swivel knot I use a trilene knot.


I have never had either of these knots fail on fish up to 9+ feet. The biggest issue I have faced is the main line rubbing on rocks. To remedy this, as soon as a fish is hooked, we cut the baot loose. THEN, and noly then, we start clearing lines. Closest to the fish first, then in order moving the direction the fish is. With 4 or 5 lines out, you have to be quick about it. Once the lines are all cleared the "Peanut Gallery" is free to resume the beer drinking and heckling the guy fighting the fish.

Thanks for all your help Joe, it sure must be nice to live so close to such a great fishery. I hope the day comes that I get a chance to catch a 9' sturgeon, must be a blast.

You guys and your 80# leaders and main line -- if you're in a boat you should be able to land any fish in CJ strike with 80# -- and then tow your boat up on the trailer with it.

Here's a tip for Curt -- take one of your 150 pound kids and tie your sturgeon line to their belt with your "knot" and let them run like 6 footer and reel them in. This should test out your setup and maybe generate some revenue from the people in the neighborhood you charge to watch you reel them in...

LOL, that gave me a good laugh, my youngest is 25 years and around 200 lbs so that would be quite a hand full to reel in. Now my oldest she is around 150 lbs but at 35 she might not like being reeled in but her son might fit the bill. I'll ask him on his next trip down here, sounds like a good idea. I'm a little concerned about the knots I've been using, that sure would be a good idea for testing them out.
