Electronic Fishing Journal
I am interested in keeping a fishing log or journal. I have looked on the web at a few different programs and was wondering if anyone out there has any insight? It doesn't have to be specifically for fishing as long as I can tailor it to work that way.

Any help would be appreciated. TIA

I built an Excel Spreadsheet. I have a page for each year. I track date, place fished, species, numbers caught, weather/water conditions, a comments block, and a special indicator * or ** for whether I should go back again. Works great, and just to sooth my ego, I auto sum the numbers caught column so I always know how many fish I have caught that year.

That sounds just like what I am looking for. The only problem is I don't have the expertise to build one. If you are interested in sending help my way send me a PM with a page out of your journal so I can pirate the program. If we can't do it through BFT I can send you my email here at work.

Thanks Smile

I do the same thing as Mojo1. I've used an Excel spreadsheet for 3 years now. I create a new column for every "trip" I go on, and in that column every species known to Utah has already got a row, so that I can enter my fishcount caught per species. It totals the total fishcount at the bottom, and then over on the right it adds up the total for each trip. For each species, I have a column for "Big fish caught of that species, which I enter the date and length. For details, I add a "comment" to each fishing trip location cell.

It sure helps as a "De-Liar" at the end of the year. Case in point: I kept track of not only my fish count, but my cousins fish count also the last couple of years. At the end of the year, I threw out the question, "So how many fish do you think you caught last year?". His reply was "At least 1000". He was shocked when I produced the fishing log which showed just about 350 total!

Great information. It sounds like a few of you out there do keep records.

I have found that just keeping the basics, my primitive way has put me on more fish the last few years than trying to draw on my memory from past trips. Especially when it comes to baits and locations.

I agree, it is hard to remember so many fishing trips much less how many fish are caught. Other details are are easy to forget, that is why I keep a journal. Chuck(Utwalleye) got me started years ago and I'm glad I did.
Anyone want to share how many times they went out fishing last year? I only got out 49 times last yearUnsure. WH2

I also keep track of my fishing trips. I built an access database about 5 years ago and have entered every trip since then. Sometimes it takes me a half hour to enter a report because I have about 100(??) different "fields" to enter information into. It is nice to be able to look up the details on old trips. When entering information it gives me a chance to reflect on why something worked well that day and what I could have done differently. Without a doubt it has made me a better fishermen.
