Fishing

For the last three days I have been fishing at starvation getting blown off the water by about noon each time. I planned on launching a drift boat at knights hollow but diddnt want to be that idiot out there getting blown to the other side of the lake. I was by myself too so even more a reason to stay off the boat. So I resorted to fishing the diversion inlet hoping for some early walleye or a hungry trout. I only caught one fish and it was on Sun. This fish I caught was a heart stopper. I got to the water about 11 am and their was already about 4 guys fishing the inlet already. They said they hadnt caught a thing all day. Seeing that they were using spinners with no luck I decided to throw out some rapalas. I had already lost one of them the day before and only had 1 left it was a perch colored. I tossed it out with no luck then another cast cranked it down fast, let it float up for a second, then cranked it down deeper at a slow speed and WHACK!!!!..... fish on!!! my pole bent right over and I knew it was a biggun. You should have seen those guys faces while they were looken over at me in awe. I yell to them I think its a big walleye!.. right then I think to myself, "I just caught my goal of a 5+pound walleye this year on my first fish". Then I see the fish at the surface and it has a goldish pale green body with a white belly. I will remind you I was using a deep diving perch repala!!! I am convinced this fish is a walleye and started to feel myself shaking(dont know if I was cold or just plain walleye fever). SO I finally get the fish to shore and see it up close DANG!!!!!!!!!!!! it was a sucker. WHAT THE HELL IS A SUCKER DIONG HITTING MY CRANK. I was very shaken up. It took me about 5 min. to finally start laughing at myself because I got so worked up. It just goes to show that if in your mind it is a walleye even a trashy old carp or sucker can be really fun to hook into.

I will be fishing out there every day possible this spring. I am addicted

lol suckeye i like that!! .. that's better than a skunkeye i guess..

if I put the word EYE at the end of any fish spices I think it would be a lot more fun to catch. except for skunkeye of coarse. BUT I think a skunkeye is a whole lot better than a just a plain old skunk.

Funny I thought of you when I caught a suckeye on a RAPALA. I am not too currant on eyelattin.LOL!!
I forgot to mention how I got ridd of the skunks the dayS that I diddnt catch fish at Starvation. .

So it ended up being a long week. I fished starvation a few more times. I have not posted any pics because I dont have any way to do it until I got home. However I have still not caught any walleye yet out of starvation.(this year) I was able to launch a drift boat out of Knight Hollow. I only was able to fish for about 1 1/2 hours before getting blown off the water AGAIN!!!!!!. I let the wind drift me while I dropped out a Lindy rig with an artificial worm(no crawlers at any of the gas stations as of Sat. morning in Duchesne)had to try something though. I was surprised when I started getting bites. Cant say what was hitting but I could not hook any fish because it is a lot harder to hold a pole and set the hook while you are trying to keep a drift boat strait and holding ores at the same time. I would love to think they were walleyes though. I was fishing the murky water line following along the channel where the new water is coming into the res. I would say about 17 to 20 feet of water. The water is still very cold. I threw out the anchor and tried throwing plastic but that wind diddnt give me too much of a chance to get serious. I let the wind blow me to shore at the first sign of any kind of a descent gust. Glad I did because the lake was full of white caps in about 3 min of me getting to shore. On a good note I diddnt get skunked because I fished the river out of the damn. The fish are there but they are so spooky it is very hard to cast a fly without giving them lock jaw and then no looks or nothing till I went to the next hole. Still very hard fishing. The water is pretty low and very clear. I think that has a lot to do with the hard to catch fish. I did manage a nice brown and a bunch of smaller ones in the river though.


These pics are of the brown and a few of starvation days of getting blown off the water. Oh and the one of the dogs, it was their first time at sea.(funny how they were so observant on the whole idea of floating on the water.)(also could not stop watchin all the birds wondering why we are not floating over to them) . Last pic is a private pond steelhead. I also hooked into a 10lb brown but could not land it because 1st I had no landing net
2nd I was fishing a very small open water pocket and the fish kept running my fly line under the ice.
3rd it was a bruiser and make about 4 long runs before he finally got a good angle on me and popped it off. the last pic is a pic of the opening that I hooked him in.

we keep talking about hitting starvation, but really hate the wind so we keep putting it back. hope to get out there in the near future. great pictures. thanks for the report.

I dont think you have missed too much in the walleye category but i have heard its good for browns right now. If your willing to wait I think that mid May is the best time to catch a bunch. I am still going to go out and fish at night a bunch this spring. I will figure out them early Starvation walleye sooner or later....... Deer Creek as well.......... it is very hard to resist going out even though it is tough fishing and bad weather. I DREAM WALLEYE

Nice pictures, I noticed that you took pictures of your fish by yourself, nice job and the Brown really had some pretty colors.

I'd say the enemy has to be the wind.The wind has took its toll on a lot of fishing trips.I can remember a lot of trips watching the wind blow and wishing it would stop..............

Walleyes are in hibernate mode now.I've used that same excuse every time I go walleye fishing.Score,walleye 5,me zero.I've been after them fish more than once at starvation and have a goose egg in the net.Once we fished all night in july and froze my ass off.Oh yea it was a hot summer day and a cold night.A thin jacket was a bad idea...........................................................................................

I can help you crack that goose egg!!!! but you might have to help me crack my dinosaur egg with a laker!!

I have done an all nighter there before and we only caught 1 fish. They started biting good all the next day though. I thought it was a little confusing because of all the hype I hear about night fishing for walleye.

COLD?? REALLY? arent you the guy that was trolling around in his boat at the Gorge in the middle of Feb. I thought you had thicker skin!!..LOL

Thicker skin maybe.Thicker coat for sure...That was the last time I got cold fishing.I don't care what time of year it is the warm gear always goes now................................
