The Ice is just around the corner
Wink

The Ice is just around the Corner. I was wondering if anyone was going to put together a early list of Utah, Idaho, and or Wyoming Ice fishing Derby dates with contacts?? Devil's creek etc. I'm an early planner ....

Welcome back Wingnut. I haven't heard anything about the Devils Creek Derby yet. I would love to fish that one again if it fits in my schedule. I am one of the crazy guys who is already going through my ice fishing stuff and making a list of all that I need to do before the first major lake freezes. I predict it will happen withing the next 14 days.

Within the next 14 days??? Oh man, you getting my heart going... I just started ice fishing last year and i had so much fun i could not believe how fast it ended..... I was wanting to know about Ririe. When does that place usually start to freeze? I done very well with the kokanee there. what are some tips to use for the cutthroat on the ice??? Could you or anyone else help me out????

Plan on Ririe mid to late January (depending on the winter of course). As for cuts I've only found them in close to shore. Usually within 20 -30 feet from the bank, w/ one exception but it was still a shallow area I was in so that my be why.

When I say 14 days I am referring to some of the smaller high mountain lakes, and shallow ponds in the area. Henrys may cap within that time period also.

I also want to put a disclaimer on that statement because there may be people out there who will venture onto the early ice without taking the necessary precautions.

#1. There is no such thing as totally safe ice so we always need to be careful.

#2. I wear a life jacket on the early season ice as it tends to be thinner and more dangerous.

#3. I carry a throw rope on the early season ice in case I or anybody else needs help.

#4. I don't stand next to anyone in the early season especially anyone as big as I am.

#5. I love ice fishing but it is not worth dyeing over so take the necessary precautions and when in doubt wait.

As for the trout in Ririe I find that they are extremely easy to catch. I fish early mornings off of rocky points in 10-25ft of water with white, chartreuse, and pink paddle bugs tipped with mealworms. I usually just set up the poles for trout to keep my kids busy while I am looking for perch or kokanee.

Please let me know if you hear anything about this one. My son won this one last year. It was the first derby I ever brought him to. He is hooked now like the old man. And yes, I am checking over all my gear in excitement already !!!

Noticed your in Logan now. We will have to keep in touch and hit a few iced ponds together this winter. Devil's for sure. We purchased the huge 6 man igloo with some of the winning$$ last year. Hope the big blue one freezes up.

Henrys had no ice on it today. Not even in the mouth of the outlet.

I was out to mud lake today, the whole west end was froze over. I don't really fish there but the rest of the ice is soon to come!

I was sitting in my gun room last night and my ice poles just started twitching in the bucket...... Can't wait for something to freeze over. These cold temps we're having now can't hurt. It'll be a while before I can do this though.

A friend of mine caught a bunch from the north boat ramp this summer but they were all small, in the 3"-6" range. So I don't know if it is any different in other parts of the lake.
