Getting ready for the Ice Fishing
It's that time of year again as the cold sets in and the ice begins to form to start thinking about fishing. I sold my Quick Flip III and bought a Quick Fish III. What have those of you who have one done to keep them from flying across the ice on a windy day? Is it real necessary to tie them down using the ropes at each side or just to screw in an anchor at the bottom? Wind was not a concern with the Quick Flip.

On windy days, you will want to tie to the center of the hubs with rope at least on the windward side and anchor it out about ten feet. It's not likely to blow away if the bottom is anchored down but I have had strong winds pop the hubs back in on the windward side. I set mine up with the door away from the wind and then tie a rope to the hub on the windward side and anchor it to the ice.

I'll second what hoongrinin just said. Anchor the bottom and the wind side. The anchors it comes with are easy to use and work great.

Thanks, guys. I suspected that I would need to tie things down. I have a popup hunting blind that I used for loper hunting this fall and I had to tie it down. It is a lot lighter than the ice tent. What type of chairs are you all using? I have used the fold up chairs that cost about $10 each that are found in nearly every grocery store. They are very comfortable to sit in, but a bit of a pain to get up out of. When I get too comfy, I tend to fall asleep, especially when I turn up the 14,000 btu heater. My quick flip had a bench.

I know what you mean about getting out of the folding chairs. I have trouble getting up quick to fight a fish. I used a 7 gallon bucket for a while, but buckets don't offer back support.

I found a great chair last year. I got it at our local Ace hardware for $25. It's a directors kind, though not as tall. It has a rigid frame and fabric seat and back and a handy little table with a cup holder on the right that flips up next to the right arm. The arm rests are rigid. It only collapses in half (with the arm rests coming together) so it's a bit more bulky to pack around, but it's worth the trouble. It's very easy to get up out of and very comfortable. Sorry, I don't know who makes it, but I've seen similar ones so there has to be more around. Keep an eye out for one, it's worth the extra money.

After the experience I had last year where I talked about my experience "ice parasailing," ( comments in the a post below), and if the wind is really gusting - a rope anchored pointing into the wind would be a must on a very windy day. Sometimes, I think one can't put out enough anchors!

I tried the quickflip tents, and I got rid of it because I found that by the time I am hauling chairs and other stuff, it was no lighter that might shack, I also had 2 different tents have poles break in the wind. the hastle of securing it down, it all takes so long to set up, for me I love the clam style, just flip the tent over and fish, no setting up chairs, no securing the tent. If the fishing sucks I move quickly. Just my 2 cents

Google tripod stool Ive used them for years some better than others there light weight and fairly comfortable. Ive found the nylon ones are light but not as comfortablable as some of the padded seat ones

CoolI kind of like these chairs: http://redrockstore.com/...p;action=show_detail

I think I'm going to order three of them - one for each kid and me. They look like they have great back support, but yet, because they have 3 legs they don't take up a ton of room in an ice shantee or your sled and should be light as well..

Just Jim,

I know the chair. I have one. It was given to me a couple of years ago for a birthday present. I keep it in my tent trailer. I thought about it, maybe I'll have to dig it out and give it a whirl.

I'm almost in the same boat as you, except I sold my QuickFlip2 and replaced it with a quickFish6. I found the QuickFish6's on sale from the MFG for under $200 this past spring. They were returns but who cares. Mine was "grade A" which meant perfect in every way except for some minor dirt on the bottom edging. I got it out just this past Saturday and set it up, and tied ropes on it to get it ready. Holy smokes its big! Nearly 7x14' INSIDE rofl! We outgrew the last shack, this baby will be nice and roomy inside :)

We usually take sleds or ATVs out onto the ice, and you are right that the quickFlips never needed tying down. I figure running a rope from the windward side of the shelter to a parked sled, then using anchors for the rest will be fine in wind. Google up the quickfish's and you will find people that say they hold up to the wind pretty good.

One suggestion I read I'm concidering is to cut a notch in a old socket so it will fit over the ice screws and use a cordless power drill to quickly set the ice screws.

I'm excited to give it a try this winter. I joked with the wife (who also loves to fish) we could bring along the generator and LCD/DVD player and watch movies while we fish.

Dude no offense, but if you've got time to watch a movie out on the ice then you're in a horrible spot for fishing.

I think you'll like it a bunch better than the collapsable kind. Mine has a fabric panel on the left, opposite the table, that has a bunch of pockets on it. Very handy.

I have the Eastman IceCube. It came with two tripod style chairs with a back on them. These are the best chairs ever. They give you back support and are very easy to get out of. They are the most comfortable chair I have ever sat in ice fishing. They don't take up very much room in the hut either.

The quick flips do have trouble in the wind if it is strong enough. Last winter at the gorge I saw several quick flips doing 10 to 20 across the ice, including my uncles. We had to use some of the ice screws from my quick fish to ancor it down. They were sitting in it fishing when it blew off the first time. It broke three of their ice fishing poles in half. Of coarse the gorge, and wyoming in general has a whole different kind of wind than we do. One time at the gorge while setting up my quickfish I went parasailing. I now tie it to the wind side ancor rope before I pop any of the sides out.
I use a big mans cabelas chair. I have broken a record 13 camp chairs in my day. The cabelas big man that I bought six months ago is still going strong. Will see if it can last a whole ice fishing season. It sucked to spend fifty bucks on a chair, but the grocery store ten dollar chairs usually don't even last me one trip.

I also use the flaps at the bottom of my quick fish 3, and if there is enough snow, I'll pack it on top of the flaps to hold it down in a mild wind. I have been in some windy situations, and never had trouble when the anchors are in. I attached a hex bit to a 2" peice of galvanized pipe with metal epoxy and then cut a groove in the other end to receive the ice anchors. They zip into the ice pretty quick with a cordless drill. I have also seen guys with manual cranks they jimmy rigged out of wood or pvc or metal.
