Re: [jigs] Wolves In reply to
Just read online that there is now 15 down and 1 of those was taken illegally. Something about shooting from the road and then calling the hotline and reporting it being taken in an entirely different area. Apparently somebody was watching.

Yes it was just a young one and a guy shot it in a NO HUNTING zone from the back of his truck and said he shot it over 2miles away in a hunting zone or somthing like that..

Re: [AverysAdventure] Wolves In reply to
My brother and I went wolf hunting on Friday evening and Saturday. Wolf hunting was great! We were in wolf central station. I called in some wolves within the first hour, but we couldn't see them (only hearing). Another hunter that was nearby heard the comotion and came our way. He scared the wolves off by missing his shot from over 400 yards away. Turns out the wolf he shot at was less than 200 yards from me.

The wolves kept us awake howling a good portion of the night and we had to put my brothers horses in the trailer about 11PM for fear the wolves would come after them. First thing in the morning we moved in on the howling wolves. We got within about 600 yards and I started howling. Within about 5 minutes we had a small one in our sights (187yards to be exact). I had a slightly obstructed shot, so I told my brother to take it. He pulled the trigger and his bullet misfired! (Pretty sure he needs to thoroughly clean his bolt.) When his gun misfired, I opted to take the shot and missed. My brother ending up killing it. I'll post pictures here as soon as he gets them sent to me. It may take him a few days, since he doesn't have very good internet at home.

Not my wolf, so I can't make the decision, but I know it will go to the tannery. I think it would make a cool hat.

My bro and I called some in again on Saturday from over 1000 yards away. Had them at around 300 or less, but never saw one. I am going to keep after them. I'll get one yet.

How do you guys know your calling them in if you never see them? Are they being that vocal? I'm just trying to get an idea because I'll be up at the cabin looking for one this month. thx

Here's how we know. Once we found tracks as we were leaving that weren't there when we came in. The tracks indicated that wolves we had been hearing out in front of us had circled and came in behind us.

All the other times, yes, they were being that vocal. the last time we called them in they were over 1000 yards away to start, but the las howl was down in the canyon below us. From where I was sitting to the top of the adjacent ridge was 387 yds (per range finder) and the wolf was between the top of the ridge and where we were, somewhere.

If you are not inclined to believe, thats okay too. I might be skeptical if I hadn't been there. The times we have called them in they have been extremely vocal.

Where is your cabin? Approximately?

Thanks for info and to let you know I totally believe you. I'm just trying to educate myself in a new sport and get as much info from as many people as possible. Another ? if you don't mind - what calls you using, and how aggressive are you calling? My cabin is above the Lowman Fishing Ponds, 10 mile creek area. My elk hunt opens tomorrow up there so I'll be leaving this afternoon. Can only hunt for a few days this week but then I will be up there 15th-25th.. Last year there where packs on both sides of the river, another on top banner ridge, another at Grandjean, and another working Lick Ck over to Kelly Ck.. Biggest pack seemed to be the one below my cabin at 10-14 animals we guessed. Guess what happened last year - no elk for me. First time that had happened in 7 years. So I hope this year I can get some meat for the freezer and a rug for the wall. If you have any suggestions or want to join me for a hunt send me a pm. thx

For calls we have used a lot of different predator calls, but what seems to work best as far as I can tell is:

Deer in distress (blown type, blown aggressively)
Elk in distress (blown type, blown aggressively)
Wolf howls using my voice. (I just try to mimic the sounds I hear them make)

There are a lot of wolves in the areas around your cabin. Good luck. I hope you kill at least one.

My son has a cow tag in unit 32 right now. As soon as we are done with that, I'll be back up in the STZ after wolves every chance I get.
