Fly fishing on the American Fork River
Fishin'
Wanted a little more fly fishing before the winter sets in and then it's ice fishing.
The Provo is an hour away and I didn't have the time to head up there so I hit the American Fork river along the camp grounds. I had a ball. At first I started with a parachute Adams. I was fishing in the shaded areas, which is most of the river now. Nothing so I put a bead head prince, I think that is what they are called, as a dropper and started catching browns right off. I'd prefer to fish on top but I'll take any fish with a fly and enjoy the catch, any size also. When I moved into a little section of sun on the riffles I noticed fish rising. Back with the Adams and I was catching on top. I had a blast. I caught till I left. There is no size to them, 9 or 10 inches is big. Some were only 3 inches. I also left my share of flies in the trees above and behind me. I'm sure it's the same on Diamond Fork and Thistle creek which I also like to fish. I think the sun on the water got some kind of hatch going, although I didn't see any bugs. I think the fish in the smaller streams aren't so picky. They just want to feed up for the winter.

Thanks for posting your report FF2. When you don't have much time, small fish are better than not fishingWink. Sounds like a fun time on the creek.

Thanks for the report.

Years ago I used to fish that creek more than any other place. I'd go up there every day after work in the summertime and just slay the browns and even a few nice rainbows. I'd use a little mepps or panther martin and knock them dead, it didn't really matter what color of spinner....and of course I released every trout I caught.

You're right, most of them are not very big, but there were a few rainbows in there that pushed 15" or so.

I imagine now that place gets more pressure than ever. But I'm glad you got into 'em.
