Went up to the Gorge to fish and help a friend put up his fence..

Got up there at 9:30 and we were on the water by 10:30...
The Macks are spawning and we headed for linwood bay we found what we thought was stacks of Macks but when we dropped down we got Burbots...

We got a few small Macks and three burbots biggest at 30 1/4" the macks was all from 2 lb to 4 lb about, the macks and burbots was full of mack eggs from eating them..

I did take a few pictures but will post them when the battery gets a charge it went dead yesterday morning...

Burbots are not like what I had been told, first they do not have teeth but a mouth like a catfish or less ruff mouth....

And they do feed in the day time as well as night, over the spawning beds we and others got lots of them each day and from the guieds we talked to (they said that one third of the fish caught were burbots on the beds)....Yesterday Jerry and myself ran past hide out about one to one and a half miles to a canyon he new of and I got a burbot at 29" that far down lake in 20' of water, and we was told by some that the DWR pulled nets in hide out and got a few burbots there as well....

We got lots of lakers each day and a few burbots as well, the biggest laker was 19.10 lb and burbots up to 31"....

Glad to see you made it up there and it sounds like you done good, Them damn Burbots are taking hold very sad
thing to here that they are all the way up there !@#$%^&
But at lest you took a few home great job!!!!!!!!!
PS what about the fence?????? did it get put up
or did the fishing take up all your time: LOL!!!!!!

I got the pictures off...

In one picture my toe points to the fat they have in them, and another picture my toe points to the stomath and how full of eggs it is, its one that was 26", one other picture is one before to show how full they look...

We did get some bass, we only fished for about three hours in the morning and then got back on the water by 3:30 each day, and fished for bass for 1/2 hour on two days we got 5 bass for one hour fishing three one day and two the other my biggest was 16 1/2" and weight was 3lb fat as a toad all of them...

The fat from the burbots in the great lakes back in the 20's and till they were all but caught out was used for medicine and oil for lamps....

The biggest laker was got by the two boys, there dad told them if they got a fish over 20 lb he would have it mounted for them...My flash did not work...Oh the fish was 21.2.....

  Those burbot look like they are going to pop! I can't believe how fat they are. Nice job and great pics. I saw some burbot that were caught in Antelope Flats last year and I was hoping that they just got lost but it looks like they are continuing to spread. I wonder how long it will be until we see how much damage they are doing to the mack population.

It will be kinda tough to really tell the impact for a while John. The higher water levels this year Made the gorge a totally diffrent place. Fish were able to get into areas that they have not been into before. Fish were so spread out. We found Kokanee in places this year that were really surprising.

With the burbot piggin out on the cradads like they do, I think your gonna see the Bass affected big time up there,

In the Great Lakes they have not hurt any thing....

And at the Gorge the bass I have seen are fat and doing great, but time will tell...

There is 30" burbot past hide out now...I wonder just how long they have been in there, and how fast do they grow a year and how big can they grow????

I hope your right Cliff. The Crawdads are pretty thin up on the Wyoming side and thinning out towards Utah also. Its simply amazing how many groceries they can put away in a day. We can only hope that they balance out.

Yes in the day.. There was 4 other boats that got more burbots then we did, one boat alone had 30 burbot from 7 to 10:30 time frame..

We only got 22 in 3 days but we fished from 7 to 9:30 each morning and from 4 to 5:30 or so in the after noon...

You can't fish Lynwood bay at night when the spawn is on....

At least 9 boats that I talked with about burbots got them in the day none fished at night...

You said that some of the macks actually had small burbot in them? if that is true that is a first that i have heard of. nice pics by the way and good job on the catching. i know that the burbot are spreading so fast and growing at increadable rates. as of 4 yrs ago i never caught one. now i can catch 20 to 30 in a night. and also during the day like you had. as much as they do eat, there is no way that we wont see an impact on the other fish species that were already there. very sad

They are getting just as many in day light as at night now, but you may have to anchor...

have you fished them at night and not during the lake trout spawn? there is a lot of diffrence from catching 20 in 3 day's than 60+in a few hr after dark. i will disagree with u 110% that thay are catching as manyduring daylight hrs as dark it aint possible fish it once after dark then tell me the same thing. great to see you did get a few but ling are a lot more active after the sun goes down................

Good pics and glad you harvested some while you were here. The first picture is your toe pointing to the burbot's testes, which is a great example showing their high reproductive potential. The female ovaries are similar in size and they can produce up to a million eggs. Burbot actually carry their fat in their liver, which is the whiter organ barely showing behind the stomach. Burbot have been documented all the way down to Jarvies Canyon, near the dam. They grow extremely fast in the Gorge and a 28-30 inch burbot is about 6 years old. In Wyoming the state record is almost 20lbs, so they get big!

Your right I haven't fished them at night, but the guides an others I talked to said they get as many in the day time WHEN they fish for them...

I was told on this board that you can't catch them in day time only night so I was just letting people know that they can be caught in day light...

If you get more at night great, as for me 9:00 is late...
