Burbot Area's?
Are burbot being caught all over Flaming Gorge? The reason I ask is I may head up this weekend and a bubby has a cabin in Manila we were going to stay in, what is possibly the most bang for our buck? Talking action vs distance. Are the burbot more concentrated up near Buckboard or even more north, or can you catch them all over? Thanks for the info.

There have been burbot found all over the lake.

If you are staying in Manila, you will have to drive at least a few miles to find stable ice to even fish on. There is a possibility of finding safe ice at Anvil, but I wouldn't try it yet.

In my opinion, Lost Dog, Firehole and the Confluence area has had substantial pressure from anglers that has both distrubred the patterns of the burbot and the numbers, which is a good thing.

Burbot are verocious eaters, but they love these:

Crawdads live in the rocks. Find the 'dads and you will get into the burbot.

As it has been mentioned before, the key to icing lots of bots is finding a rocky hillside that jets into the water or even a shallow shale bed that extends into the lake. Flaming Gorge is littered with this terrain. The second key is to drill holes outside of the "freeway". I fished an area around Buckboard a few days ago that looked like a peice of swiss cheese. There were more than 50 holes within a 100' radius. These holes were drilled at different times, so it is likely that someone "set up camp" because it looked like a well used spot.

It is very important that you stay near your poles to maximize your catch rate. Many of the burbs bit light enough that my bells were not rattlling. Shallow, light tugs are common. If you are not holding your rod, or watching them close, you will miss the catch.

The best spots to find the burbot or ling is to find any rocky point that drops off into deeper water and there should be fish there. You can also find them along rocky shore lines but the points are the best.
The ling tend to be in deeper water during the day and move into shallow water as the day turns into night. They will feed during the day but most folks catch the larger numbers after dark. The best baits and lures to use are sucker or chub sucker and minnows. the best lures are glow jigs, I use these three brand names, Radical Glow, Maniac lure and Freshwater Basics.
After seeing what noise does to the ling, I would reconmend getting away from other groups and try not to make a lot of noise while fishing once you get set up. I have caught them as shallow as 3 feet and as deep as 30 ft with the best depth for me being 12 to 15ft. When I fish for them, I like to drill several holes, starting shallow and moving out into the deeper water and then get set up before dark. Remember everyone needs to have address labels on their fishing poles and your allowed up to 6 poles. I fish with 4 poles and spread them out from deep to shallow and once I catch the first ling I move the other poles to the same area and set up my tent over two of the holes.
I hope that helps. WH2

You are allowed six rods total and you can fish all six rods for trout if you want to.

If you have over 2 rods they all need to be labeled, no matter what you're fishing for.

If you only fish with 1 or 2 poles, you do not need to label them. If you have 3 or more poles in the water, they all have to be labeled. You may fish with up to 6 poles, and be able to fish for any kind of fish you want. Check your regs for limits, no limit on the slimers, and you CANNOT release them, kill and grill all of them.
