So what you are saying is that if I have the fillets equivalent to 20 crappie at home in the freezer then I can only keep 30 on my next outing?

FYI, I release 90 percent of what I catch. I came here from Oklahoma and we had a daily bag limit of 74 crappie. I thought that 50 crappie was specified as a take home limit and not the aggregate except for at Willard Bay and Pineview. I am not a complete fish hog and I try top obey the rules. There isn't even a limit on crappie in some places because they are such prolific breeders and can quickly over-populate a place. I donated some fillets to some of my poor neighbors and I'm sorry for the misunderstanding.

Dont sweat it man. Some folks just want to stir up $h-t. Some folks think they are so high and mighty that they can do no wrong. Some folks are just dumb as a stump. Most of us really dont care how many fish you have in the freezer, but, can I go Crappie fishin with ya some time?

CoolHey Bro, we weren't really trying to give you a hard time. But I know you came here from another state that has more liberal regulations on crappies and other species. Heck, almost any state is more liberal on crappies.

My only suggestion is to be a bit more careful about what you post...especially if it can be interpreted as being afoul of regulations. In Utah there are different bag and possession limits for almost all waters that have crappies in them. And the law is open to the interpretation of the DWR officers. If one of them was to find you with 100 fillets...from a water where the statewide limit of 50 applies...he could arbitrarily assume that you caught them in Willard or Powell...where the limit is only 10.

We have some quirky laws in Utah...especially on trout. For example if you catch and keep a couple of tiger trout under 22 inches in Huntington, and then go fish in Scofield, a CO might check your fish from the other lake and give you a ticket for being in possession of slot limit fish at Scofield.

It pays to know the regulations and to not leave yourself open to being considered a violator. We know you know how to catch the crappies at Utah Lake. And there are plenty of them in there. But not many folks look kindly on somebody who harvests for the freezer and then boasts about having more than the bag and possession limit.

I'm sorry.Unsure I read the guide book and it said that possession was in the aggregate between actual physical possession and what is at home. I didn't know. I came here from Oklahoma and the daily limit there was 74 per person. I try to obey all the rules and I don't poach and hoard. I usually take what I would like to have available for a pleasant dinner or entertaining guests on occasion and once I feel that what I have is more than sufficient I don't keep any more. I release most of the fish I catch and I believe in conservation. Crappie are an extremely prolific species with a tendency to over-populate and there are places I have fished that don't even have a limit. It was my mistake and I feel bad.Frown

Damn TD... I feel like such an ignorant fool. I should have known, but I missed it all in in the interpretation of one tiny paragraph. I guess I'll have to start having fish fries more often. Anything that is good frozen is better fresh anyway.

The crappie are just as tasty as the eyes, if not more, but there is more work involved for the amount of filleting. I read my profile again just to be sure that there was no tracking me down for a witch hunt and my address is "Wherever the fish are" in Magna, UT. All I have to hope for is some respect from the anglers that I have shared some of my best memories with and I have gotten nothing but pure respect. I misinterpreted the law but I do not ravage fisheries and I release at least nine times out of ten. I don't like having to defend my good name to people for a small infraction that can be misconstrued and used against me.... especially from jealous sharks looking for some chum because they don't catch as many fish in a year as I do in single outings at times.

I don't think it really has anything to do with jealousy. You made a mistake, but it doesn't make it less illegal.
But what done is done, hope for the best and now you know.

I am just a little surprised that in the past three days, I have read post about "MISTAKES".
I have to say it again, no excuse for ignorance (not knowing) to break the law. This is a good thing and probably more enforced now due to some NON ENGLISH speaking people trying the old "I didn't know" story.

1. What is good in one state, may not be good in all states.
2. With the 365 day license, first of every month check yours to see when it is expired, or before you hop in the car and head out.Wink

Be safe this year,

FG

I can vouch about his releasing fish. I met him at Jordanelle last summer and all the fish I saw him catch went right back into the lake.

It will be a pleasant change from the 300 or so crappie fillets in the freezer.

CoolMaybe it was an exaggeration kinda like "I have a million fillets in the freezer". I always say I have a freezer full of fish to emphasize that I caught a bunch of fish but really I only ever freeze a couple fillets at a time.

Thanks for noticing Albino. The weird thing with this whole ordeal is that I could fry 50 crappie up every day or 100 between my roommate and I and give what we didn't eat to the neighbors and that kind of resource hogging would be justification to go take another limit. I don't condone that kind of behavior and I think it is more dangerous to a fishery then people who take more than their limit on the rare occasion that they get into a lot of them. I say "rare occasion" because, let's face it, people who feel compelled to take everything have, for the most part, extremely limited success on most outings because of their limited fishing knowledge. I made a mistake but people are still chiming in with their holier than thou spankings and I consider that to be character assassination. I have even been reminded to "check my license for an expiration date." I bet these people have tongues that are just as sharp as their wit and my guess is that they slice and dice everyone around them.

Guru,

I say you handled this well, you made a mistake and broke the fish laws. You now understand them & can move forward. I commend you for being honest & admitting to it, thats more than alot of folks could do.

I say past that everyone should chill & put this thing to rest. I dont know you, but from other posts it sounds like your a stand up fisherman. Peace and good fishing !

Thank you for your kind words. If there is one thing more important than what I've learned about the limit law in this whole ordeal, it's that I have more friends than I knew on this site.

I GUESS IN OKLAHOMA THEY CALL THEM 300 CRAPPIE FILLETS, BUT IN UTAH WE CALL THEM POTATO CHIPS.

Then maybe you need to learn how to fillet if that's all you can get.

my filleting skill is fine , i am referring to the size of the fish that you catch. It must get tiring catching a years worth of fish for your average guy in 1 in 1 day, and then having to swim from sharks.

I catch a lot of larger fish too. If the rules are in place then I will try to abide by them. But sometimes the rules aren't thought out very well.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what would be the law's view if you caught a bunch of crappie in Idaho and had them in your freezer in Utah? Would they count in your possession for Utah?
