F.G. Relay Burbot Derby Ice conditions
Just wanted to touch base with everyone before the "Reeling for Relay" Burbot Ice Fishing Derby this weekend.
Here is the latest (as of today) report from the Game and Fish on the ice conditions at Flaming Gorge. This cold weather we've been having has made an improvement.
Just got off the ice. From Confluence area to mid way down Currant Creek cliffs there is about 6-7 inches of ice. From mid Currant Creek cliffs downstream for about 1/4 miles we were on about 3 inches of clear strong ice. There was several more parties another 1/2 mile down reservoir fishing. I am assuming they were also on 3 inches of ice. Big Bend is frozen but I have no idea how much ice. I am guessing it is similar to the ice we were on but nobody should venture out onto that ice without inspecting it thoroughly.

Conditions can change quick, but that is what we say. I would discourage anyone from taking 4-wheeler, etc on the ice south of the confluence. For that matter I would discourage people from taking four wheelers out period, but definitely south of the confluence.

It's not to late to sign up if you haven't already. We will be at Buckboard tomorrow, Feb 10, from 9 AM to 9 PM taking registrations. The Bass Association is going to be there Sat and Sun scanning the fish to look for internal tags. They have put up a bounty for any lucky person that catches a tagged burbot. Also on Sunday a local non profit group will be selling navajo tacos, fry bread, chili, coffee,
hot chocolate,.....etc at a tent just outside the headquarters

First----$1000-------------6th-----$100
2nd-----$500-------------- 10th---$1000
3rd------$200-------------- 11th----$100
4th------$100-------------- 15th---$1000
5th------$1000

Lots of shore prizes
"Biggest" and "Littlest" Burbot
"Biggest" and "littlest" 12 and under

I like your payouts Kip, you don't have to first to get top prize, it looks like every 5th person wins $1,000, is that correct?

That is correct. 1st, 5th, 10th, and 15th all win a $1000. We don't all have the opportunity to fish the gorge everyday so this gives everyone a chance 2 b a winner. We think it also helps to stop pooling of fish to get the big money. If you would like more info message me your E address and I'll send it to you

Last year the 1st place team caught 378 lbs of burbot and recieved a $1000 and "Ling King" coats. 15th place with 46 lbs also recieved a $1000. It's not to hard for a 3 person team to get 46 lbs of burbot in two nights fishing.

I was up last weekend and I would not worry if you have a four wheeler up the blacks fork arm I was maybe 1 mile up from the confluence and the ice was 15 inches thick.
