Jordan River 3-19-12
decided to hit a spot on the jordan where i have had good success for differnt species. started of fishing a small chartruese tubie tipped with a nightcrawler and did well catching dink mudcats and a few 12 inch channel cats. moved down to a new spot and it was on. i fished for 2 hours and ended up catchin 5 Wb, 4 bluegill and 1 small LMB. we also caught some big carp to that looked alittle differennet than common carp. are they grass carp or what? going to hit it again this weekend for some bigger kitties as it warms. sorry no pics but will post some this weekend when i go since i dont have a camera on my phone. thanks

I've pulled a few carp out of Utah Lake/Jordan River that look a little different than common carp. I realized later that one I caught was actually a sucker (good thing I released him!). I've caught some carp that look almost like a mirror carp. Their scales aren't nice and even like on a common carp. Don't know if that is just the result of genetics or if someone was kind enough to dump yet another species in there. Pics would help Wink

There are definitely mirror carp in the system. They're just a genetic variation of the common carp. Up here in The Bear River system, I would say that they're actually predominant over the standard carp.

Makes me think that I need to hit that river again soon. Just thought about it the other day when the news mentioned the dead body of a girl was found in the draper section of the river under a bridge. Sad stuff.

Why? There are no special regulations on the Jordan River. You can't keep June Suckers from anywhere, and you can't keep any suckers from Utah Lake and it's TRIBUTARIES. The Jordan River is NOT a tributary of Utah Lake. You can keep common suckers from the Jordan River. Just be sure you know the difference between June Suckers and common suckers.

Sorry I should have clarified. I caught the sucker near where the Jordan dumps into Utah Lake so technically it was Utah Lake. This was back when I was a newbie Utah fisherman. I knew it was some sort of bottom feeder and suckers (and the like) where I grew up turned into cut bait or went back into the water with extra ventilation. I looked at it, said to myself "gross. I wish this was a catfish", and tossed him back in the water. Smile

I challenge anyone to tell the difference between a Mt. Sucker and a June Sucker !!!

Even most of the experts have a great deal of difficulty telling the difference!!

I know I would not be able to.

Ain't what I've heard. The Junies have a mouth that points forward. The Utah Sucker has a mouth that points downward. Seems like it would be fairly easy to tell the difference.

i wish i had pics of all the grass carp I pulled out of jordan river about 8800 s. They hit the grub hard and fight a little different than the common carp. I let them go. cool fish, all silver, a little more stocky than common carp.

Were you above the dam?
"The Jordan dumps into Utah Lake" doesn't happen. The Jordan River dumps out of Utah Lake. So if you were fishing the Jordan River, you weren't fishing in Utah Lake.

Right. My bad. For some reason I still think that river should flow the other way. Wink
