bear river
tryed the bear river last night I had several crawdad bite, Bonert hooked a nice trout for about a minit, fishing is slowing down. I think the water has got colder due to the snow melt. hopefully it will improve with warmer weather. The narrows is just about ice free.

I guess I will add to my own post .Went down on the bear again with my young freind Marty, he could not keep them off his lure, Was good to watch a young man have fun listening to his drag squeel.
Wet ryed the lake first, and only caught moss . Went down on the river and he did really well.
I think he is well on his way to be as good as me, after several more years of my tuterage.
Some of the fish pictures are posted on marty cooks face book page.

I guess I will just have to respond to my own posts. but it dont matter to me.
Went back down on the bear acouple times this past week, fished pounced all over rapelas and brass spoons. some were over 5 pounds, no camera. Then last trip not a bite. but it was hours ealer than the first trip. If you go leave early or way late in afternoon and plan on staying after dark.

Sounds like you are doing good. Are you fishing the Narrows only or are you fishing some other areas too?

How is access?

Right now just been down on the narrows, access is good no mud and roads are drivable. If you go like I said early or way late is the best . I think the game aqnd fish department needs to plant some rainbows in there. 10 years ago my friend said that was one grait bow fishery and Ive not caught a bow down there yet. Joe

What have you been catching? Cutts? Browns?

been all cuts,
I called and talked to the man in charge of the narrows fishery and he did not give me any hope that they are going to do much more with the narrows res, said it is not A thats a shame it could be a grait fishery, if just managed the right way. but I dont think its in the cards for that lake. He did tell me that here is a growing presnce of yellow perch showing up in the lake . Three age classes most are 12 through 8 inches and expects in the next few years it should produes some good perch fishing, but the trout fishing will decline. if not seece to exsist. Also asked if they were ever planning on ever putting rainbows in the lake and said definatly no.
I was also planning a trip up to soda lake by Pinedale, (I think thats why I called him) and he said theres not enough fish there to hardly count,so I will probably go to catch some catfish on the blacksmith fork, that dumps into Flameing gorge .He said in april and May thats a good place to chase Big kitty fish.Joe

mostly the river, thats were most of the action has been. Caught mostly cut throats, with an ocasional brown.I have not caught any smaller fish, all been healthy fat 16 inch pluss fish. you would think smaller ones would be in the river, and lake, but I have not seen any, Last fall I spent over a week camped by the boat dock , deer hunting. And at dusk I saw tons of big fish jumping so I know there in there, just hard to get them to bite on what Ive tryed ,and Ive tryed lots of diferant lures. Guess its time to put on some old fasion worms. Next time I fish the lak, im going to take the boat with the motor and my best fish finder and see if I can see some fish. then try for them, with bait. I have not tryed that yet.( just been throwing lures) and see if I can find the trout and perch.
I asked about the tiger musky, and they were put in there over 25 years ago, and they said there all gone down streem or died. If they are not going to manage it for trout might as well plant some warm water fish. cats, bass, walleye.. there allready in the bear river down streem.

I have not heard of anyone catching perch out there. Maybe no one fishes for them. A 12 inch perch is a nice fish. It would be nice to know how many are in there. That is good walleye food. I heard the F&G is only planting native species and rainbow aint on that list. I am sure by now some walleye have migrated down there from sulfer. It sure used to be some kind of fishery out there all through the 80`s and 90`s. Did fish and game give a reason for giving up on planting it and managing the narrows as a fishery? Fishon

I would bet that since it gets drained down so much every year by the farmers that it would just be a waste to keep stocking it, especially in low water years, I would bet they have a major die off so they probably just said screw it, whatever can survive in there we will just let em.

Thats what I think too and why I dont bother fishing out there anymore unless it is for some fresh sucker meat. I might have to investigate the perch population though. Have you caught any out there? Fishon

Re: [JLW] bear river In reply to
The anser I got about not wanting to manage it was, not money wise.
I also asked about makeing a deal with the water users to keep enough water to keep healthy fish populations and he said its not going to happen.
Acording to him the perch are there, and i am going to try and find them. they are about as good eating as you can find. a 12 inch perch is a big perch. He also said in the next 2 to 3 years it should be a good perch fishery. And like you I think the walleye and the smallmouth bass that are in sulpher creek hould allready be there. I\last year I did better for them 2 species on SC than for trout.
Yesterday I talked to a friend about Fauntanel sid a fellow he works wih went and caught some browns, good size ling and some rainbows that are starting to spawn, should have went there today but he dont like to fish in the snow, But he is off for the next 4 days so I hope he still wants to go when the weather gets better. 4 years ago we hit it in the middle of the bow spawn and I was blown away by the size of the bows we were catching just 10feet off shore. I got to get me one of those new cameras that fit in my pocket, I miss way to many photo chances. the phone camera I got SUCKS.

Well good luck fishing if you go. There are some scrapping rainbows and cuts to be caught in Fontenelle. It sure is low right now is the only thing that sucks. I do not now why they took it down so far. It cant be good for those fish either. Take pictures.....Fishon

Have never fished in the reservoir, wife's family is from Woodruff so I do alot of fishing around there when we go up, have fished the Bear below the reservoir on some family land but the cow's have torn it all up, need to head up higher by the dam and give it a shot. Usually fish Birch Creek or Woodruff Creek Res. when I go up there.

Hey remo, I dont know if you fished it or not but we used to walk around woodruff creek res. and fish the upper end and the river coming into it this time of year when the cutts are spawning and really do good. It is a pretty good hike but worth it. FYI Fishon
