Beavers at Lake Mead
I spotted a big shiny spot off the river between Lake Las Vegas and Lake Mead on google maps near where the lake body opens up. So I made a trip down there and did some hiking. After some searching and map poking, I did indeed find a big shallow pond that's now covered with reeds except for some open channels and little pools. I made my way to the water line and was really excited to see how bassy the area was, and a little mound of mud to stand on that extended into the water told me that people have already fished this place even though it seemed so remote. Well, after some time there I saw only 1 baby bass, and caught a carp on some corn. I started tossing little plastics at a big bullfrog that was trying to eat my topwater lizards, when right beside me a giant shadow swam past. I thought it was the biggest leatherback turtle I'd ever seen. It swam under some tree's beside me and I started tossing corn at it to try and pull it in. WELL, 10 minutes go by and it swims back out from the tree's and pops it's head out of the water...it's a huge beaver, and it's swimming straight toward me. Well as he gets closer I start wondering if he's feeling territorial, and I pick up a big stick beside me and hit the water lol....well, he ends up swimming along the piece of land I'm standing on, and goes right underneath it, then I hear a big 'bloooop' under my feet like a big pocket of air in one of those 5 gallon water dispensers. So it was then that I realized I'm standing on this guys dam, and decided to ead out so my legs don't gets gnawed off at the bone like a couple hairy tree stumps. But wtf??? I've heard of beavers once being at lake mead, but never knew they were still part of the ecology. Anyone else ever had a beaver encounter at the lake? Like, a rodent beaver Wink

My daughter and I watched one in December or January messing around in the river up off Las Vegas wash. We were in their netting shad and see him going in and out of the cattails. Maybe 500-800 yards up into the river from the wash.

Might be the same one... Same area per se.

23 years on Mead, I've never seen one. That's pretty cool.

I think it's funny that when you were getting charged by a beaver, your innate response was to grab your stick and wave it around..... LaughLaughLaugh

I do the same exact thing!

Funny that you bring this up! I was fishing years ago somewhere in between Boulder Harbor and 33 hole and I saw a Beaver swimming across the cove. I remember seeing his face looking at me and I could see his tail. I could not tell what he was thinking at the time that Beavers are not out here.

CoolI have seen a muskrat also south of 33 hole. Saw where he had built up a home in a big crack in the rock.
