Quick Oneida/Condie run
Set out to try and pick up some straggler walleye before they were back to the norm at Oneida this morning. Got the first cast off at about 6:30 and started hooking up with smallies that were all about the one pound mark. Though I know most of you have been jazzed about getting the smallies I keep getting bummed that I am not catching any walleye yet this year. I ended up catching 7 small mouth, 2 trout and 1 sucker that was about 6 pounds. When I had that sucker I thought for sure I had a nice female walleye on but luck of the draw handed me a large turd.

Since I seemed to be able to pick up the bass, I figured I would stop by Condie since nobody has had much luck there and just see if things had picked up. With only one boat making its way around the far shore I figured I would hug the first arm of the lake and try my luck. Nothing seemed to work out of my arsenal except for a chartuese spinner bait in the shallows. All though I never got into a big hog like I had hoped, the little 8 inchers were slamming that bait and getting acrobatic after being hooked. After about 2 hours I was able to pick up 10 that were all about the same 8 in size. Could see alot of cloudy dirt marks around the edges but couldnt see any fish actually sitting in them so it at least looks as though things should be picking up. Felt good to actually be out in some decent weather and catch a few fish.

Sounds like fun, and seems you got the bass dialed in pretty good. Been wondering how things are doing up that way. Thanks for the report.

Too bad the walleye weren't coming out to play, but it sounds like the bass were being eager little pigs. Fun stuff!

Hello,

Thanks for the news on Oneida. Altough you were hoping for walleye it sounds like you had some fun fighting fish at least! What were you fishing with to get the bass, trout and sucker to bite? I have not fished for walleye in Idaho as of yet, but have had tremendous success back home in S.Dak tossing Northland Whistler jigs tipped with worms, leaches or minnows, chucking Shad Raps at wind blown points and of course drifting with a spinner/bait rig if they were deep enough.

One more question for you... What did you mean by getting straggler walleyes before they were back to the norm? Is post spawn and summer walleye fishing bad on Oneida?

Thanks!

I was getting all the small mouth on jigs tipped with worm or a spinner bait. The large mouth I could only get with the spinner bait. As far as getting the stragglers, its just easy this time of year to target where they try to spawn. Which is funny to say now since I didnt get a single hook up on a walleye for this years spawn. The fishing is great during the summer but your odds of hooking up with a large female are much better during the spawn around here.

Right on...what are the water conditions lie on the lake?

There any other species worth fishing for on Oneida like perch, bluegill or crappie? I live in Idaho falls and would really like to get a mixed bag if I make the journey down there.

Thanks again for the info!

As far as the lake goes the walleye are what I target most but the perch were getting to be really nice size last year. There are usually alot of perch but last year we were catching quite a few over a pound. The river below has some pretty good trout fishing and if you down stream a little further you can get into some pretty good cats. For that matter if you go up to Alexander which is in that neck of the woods there are good cats there as well. Kind of a mixed bag for the types of fish you can catch down in that part of the state.

Cats in Alexander are way small. My best is maybe 2 lbs. U do any good on size for cats in Alexander? ?

Last year all I was able to get out of there were small cats but the couple years before that we would catch 4-6 pounders but that only seemed to be at night. Also on that note my buddy from work claims to have some new cat fish solution he found that uses Koolaid that he claims he was slaying some nice ones on out of there a couple years back. I keep forgetting to ask him what the mix is but sounds off the wall to me.

was that you in that first cove. I saw a truck parked over there and me and my buddy were fishing out of his boat from about 6:30 in the morning till about 12:00 p.m. We also caught a lot of the smaller ones but also a couple nice ones.
