Following in the Footsteps of Others....
With all this "artic" success from my friends and family lately I knew that I had to get a piece of the pie before the spawn ended. So I enlisted BFT's FlyFishing Lover (aka AM1 ) to come along for the hike. We started early...ok well not so early since he lives so far away. Driving up the dirt road we almost got a free 100lbs bumper sticker....luckily the deer jumped left, not right. At the trailhead we suited up the goodies and got to the pain part.

FFL was off like a ghazel being chased by a lion! Me I was more like a turtle looking for a place to bed down. We met back up at the 1st brookie pond. Tried a few casts....just a bite on the spinner. So we crossed the river and made haste for the lake!

Once at the lake the wind was NUKING...but that ment the bugs were kept at bay. Sure enough I fly casted the "zebra midge" and BAM....caught my 1st Artic Grayling.
Then for the next couple of hours it was one after another
.

Then the wind stopped...and the bitting bugs came out in full force! With my jacket on me already, I had some body armor...but my legs were getting assaulted. So I got some mud and spread it over my legs. Hey it worked! You know women pay good money for those kind of "mud treatments" Laugh . I started to get into some cutthroats at the end of the day. Both of which were released

At 6pm we called it quits and started back to the car. On the way down we encountered some deer, but no moose...maybe that moose wants nothing to do with spikey haired fisherman anymore after its last encounter. Kept the bear spray out and in hand the whole way down. Ended up catching 20 Artic Grayling and 2 Cutthroat Trout. FFL got 15 Artic Grayling and 3 Cutts.

ADDITIONAL............
Ugh....I go out to tackle a bucket list/get even with TDT, and TDT adds another one (Walleye) to the list!

+1 to that JLG78. Finally did a whole day of just fly fishing.....only a few casts with the spincaster on that brookie pond. Next time I am not even gonna bother taking the spincaster. I would have got way more fish but like a dumba$$ I used 8lbs mono as tippet....whoooops...should have brought the 5x tippet. Just learning the ropes still I guess. Still a great time. For once I did not bust, break or loose a fly! Simply amazing. Great scenery, good company, and decent fishing.....it certainly beat working for sure!

My phone was in the car, no reception at that area so it was turned off. Stayed up till 2am cleaning those fish. For the record you looked more like the turtle on the way back down. Seriously you should have that knee checked out. You can blow out your ACL and then be able to walk again in a week or two. However your body does not repair it all that well....and shifting of the knee cap is a BIG sign that you have done some SERIOUS damage in there. For gods sakes buddy...you are young...get that stuff checked out...I need my hiking buddy in tip top shape!

Thanks for coming along on the adventure. That is the best I have ever done on a fly rod! Considerng I have only fly fished a handful of times in my life...that was fun. Tugs are Tugs...but on the fly rod it is way more rewarding, fun and not as boring! Do yourself a favor and get some Zebra Midges. BTW the name of that fly I let you use was a blue nymphacator tung....told ya it had a funny name.
P.S. If your parents are looking for another kid to take care of I would gladly fill the slot. I can't tell if I was really hungery from hiking all day or those were just the best tacos I have ever had! It was priceless (ok it did come with a price) when your dad dropped all those plates....pretty funny!
Had a great time buddy!

ya i might get it checked out this week. IF I HAVE A CAR GRRRRRRRRRR!
Ya i know i was a turtle down hill because i was eatting, drinking and making sure i dont blow my knee cap out.
Ya i need to get some flies at those stores lol. For me the fish they were pulling good going from one side to the other they didnt want to be in my cage of heaven . It sucks the good cutty that i had on got unhooked. that why you heard me go all ballistic lol.
If you pay for rental maybe we would let you stay at the house lol. Ya you were hungry after looking at the food and then it was gone.

I know right where you fella's were and I've been itching to get back up there again. There isn't much size in those fish, but man, are they beautiful. I am curious how well you liked eating the AG's though, because I kept one the last time I was there and it tasted like the ass end of a dead rhino. I also don't know how you guys managed all of that in a single day -- for an old fat guy, that hike is brutal, and if I'm going to do it, I'm packing up gear to spend at least one night.

Anyhow, congrats on the AG's, I'm jealous.

TBD

p.s. How was the trail? Last year around this time it was completely blown out and I walked maybe 80% of the time in mud or several inches of water. The streams that you had to cross were full on over-the-knee raging, which made things interesting...

Ya the trail wasn't as bad at all of what you are saying but it was a challenge because how many rocks your gota skip around or walk through some mud. Plus spawning is ending soon so its not really worth going up there any more.

Good job crossing that one off. Those aren't small either, for grayling.

Hell, yes. A shifting knee cap is a BAD sign. And if you really broke your ACL, or PCL, that's the beginning of the END of your knee. Seriously, you'll end up with an artificial or a fusion in 20 years.

GET IT LOOKED AT!
