Fishing

I grew up in Southern California but never fished from shore other than a few attempts at pier fishing. I'm gonna be heading home to visit for a few days and wanted to give it a try. Anyone have any suggestions on where to fish (relatively close to the Huntington/Newport area), and what to use?

I've been fishing like crazy up here in Idaho and have been loving it, but I thought it would be fun to try my luck at some saltwater species. I've been out in boats off-shore, and have caught perch, yellowtail, calico bass, guitarfish, and some kind of small shark. Just wondering what to do to have any luck fishing from shore.

Hey thanks for the info. I'll actually be back down in So Cal for a friend's wedding at the end of June. I'll stop by BFT in Seal Beach.

Definitely stop by big fish tackle, pick up some mussels and or ghost shrimp. All you need to fish off the beach is a 12-20lb rig and some 2-4oz sinkers. I prefer the pyramid sinkers. And bring another smaller 4-8lb rig and you can chuck smaller krocs/kast masters or lucky craft 110s into the surf for some surf perch, corbina or even halibut.

Just tie a regular carolina rig or something similar, you don't need anything fancy. Put on some bait mussels, ghost shrimp or squid and you're good to go. Squid and mussels work really well for me but a lot of people like ghost shrimp. I myself have never really had much success with them. Also if you find some sand crabs try pinning one or more of those on your hook depending on their size.
