Night Pike under a Full Moon
Yuba - So I tricked FlyFishingLover to hit Yuba and after work on saturday we drove down there. I launched my pontoon by 6:45pm and trolled for pike. Sure enough on my 1st pass by the bank I ran into a fellow BFT'er and just chatted till dark. He said something that caught my attention.......wonder what the full moon at night will do for night pike fishing?
So I spent $20 and paid for a site at Oasis. I tied all my usual bags of tricks with no love. Meanwhile FFL (the EuroPEEan) started catching carp (CRAP) and stuck to that.
I even got the courage to motor far away in the dark not knowing what the wind might do. Wind is the worst 4 letter word after carp at yuba in case you didn't know that already. Well I lost 1 pike and got a few bites out there but after an hour I returned to the ramp. So I decided to get radical and try some gear I bought a long time ago that had never worked. Suddenly at 1am I had my 1st ever pike during night trolling in the full moon. It was an 18.5 incher.
Yep I made the goal of doing that under those conditions and made it happen. By 2am I was done and decided to just tie my toon to the dock and sleep right there on the dock in just a light sleeping bag, jacket, and snowpants. WORST IDEA EVER!!!!!!!!!!
I got 2 hours of sleep collectively. I was forced to run up and down the ramp, the parking lot, and do jumping jacks to stay warm. By 7 am I was begging for the sun to give me warmth.
So all moring I could only produce bites here and there. Noticed the water clarity changed again and there was moss growth attached to my lures. Hmmmm? Game changer again! So I came into the marina to eat lunch and the BFT'er was there trying for pike. Sure enough his wife hooked up with a beast but it wasn't to be. His kids got into a mess of perch and bluegill though! Then a mexican came by and got one on the 1st cast. It was 28inches and 5lbs 3ozs. With the feed bag on I headed out like a bat out of hell and within 1 min of trolling I got this puppy. A 23.25 inch pike!
So with that I trolled around and lost on more pike and got a few solid bites. Then I made the long trek to the other beaches with just a bite here and there to show for it. FFL and I ate dinner, changed my battery, and went back for more! We attemped to get the perch and bluegills but they were done bitting a long time ago. Well the battery lasted 10 mins and sure enough I had a beast on the line.
This guy was fighting like a frieght train! With 60lb test and a reel to match this guy was not coming in. Dragging my toon to the right severly even! Lucky him because he got off the hook. My toon was now motorless and the wind was horrific so I just tried aimlessly casting to see if I could not get some love. NOPE the last hour was a waste. Had the thought of getting a 3rd battery for my collection but then I realized all I missed was a 45 mins session.
Spoke to the guys at the Saqouia store earilier in the day and they informed me they are done for the year I was the last customer. This trip I made to the goal of not getting a carp. Acomplished that too!
