Arizona ice fishing
The high country lakes are finally frozen enough for ice fishing. I was able to get up to there and make the first trails into the lake this weekend. The ice on sunrise lake was 5 to 10 inches thick depending on the spot and A1 was 5 to 8 inches of good clear ice. A friend and I caught 30 fish in the two days we went. The bite wasn't as good as we had hoped but it was still a solid couple of days. I hope to see more people out there soon.

Thanks for the report. I'm bringing family up this week to stay at a lodge in Show Low; any rumors on conditions of the lakes that haven't iced over?

A friend of mine fished show low lake a few days ago and didnt have much luck. He did catch fish but the bite was very slow. The lake was ice free that day but the cold weather has ice over about half of it. Possibly more now. Nelson resovoir was only half iced over on Sunday but the bite is very slow on power bait. If you're looking to have a decent day of fishing I recommend hitting the ice on the reservation. A1 and sunrise lake are good. Horseshoe is extremely slow and the ice isn't very thick.

Hey let me know if you did any fishing while you were in show low and if you caught anything. I was hoping to get out this weekend too but I had to help family move so I'm reading about fishing since i can't go fishing.

Sorry for such a late follow up. Fished only open water on Fool Hollow Jan 3/4th. Got the super skunk. Tried throwing some spinners, drowned some worms, and floated power bait between the 4 of us late in the afternoon both days. Zero. Not one bite from anyone. Iced over areas were not safe to walk on. Looked to be 2" max. Stopped by Show Low Lake both days and there was not any fishable open water present. Stopped by lower Verde on the way home and snagged a couple planter bows on a Blue Fox #3. Nothing special unfortunately.

Well darn sorry to hear that. Fools hollow is a tough lake for trout. The only luck I've had there was trolling in a boat. The only thing I really target in fools are channel cats. I did catch 87 crappie in an our there one day but that doesn't happen very often.

A friend and I took another ice fishing trip on Sunday. We started at sunrise lake where it was -19 degrees and we only caught one small rainbow. We went to horseshoe lake the second half of the day and caught 1 more little one. Not the best trip. If you ever want to get up here on the ice this winter let me know. We can head out to A1 lake. We've never caught anything huge there but we usually catch a lot.

Appreciate the offer to tag along and ice fish, but unfortunately I got rid of all my ice fishing gear when we moved from Utah. All I have now is fly and spin reel gear.

On a side note I'm heading to Prescott area Monday morning to try the early bite at Lynx then as the day warms a bit I'm going to fish down the Verde a bit. I'll put in a report after I get back.

Well that's a bummer about your ice gear. Me and 3 other guys went up today and caught 47 by 2:00. I've never fished lynx or the verde but I have a good friend that lives over that way so if you give me a positive fishing report perhaps ill pay him a visit and try some fishing. Good luck Monday. I'm looking forward to reading your report.
