I am not a fan of Cabela's lines. That Sage looks great.
As far as up lining one, on a floating line. It is a bigger diameter which means more wind resistance. I over line my sinking lines because they are a thinner diameter to begin with.
You will feel the load up. But if you have a medium flex rod it will slow it down even more. Great if you have a super fast rod.

I like the GPX line because it is 1/2 line heavier.

Long story short...it couldn't hurtSmile

It looks like that one you posted from basspro is only available in a 5wt or an 8 wt. blarg. It looks like it might be down to this one. Unless I can find a rod to go with the intruder reel with line and backing to come up to the same price. It also looks as though I'll have to order online. One of my cards expires soon and I won't be able to get to the store before then.

then it's down to length

Where do you live? Are you thinking 6 weight?

Indiana. Fishing for smallies mostly.

I thought this one might look like a contender too.

I just noticed that that one doesn't have any backing or line or anything. Maybe I'll do that one anyway and get a nicer line like you suggested. It's only Feb so I won't be out fishing for at least another 6 months anyway.

Getting my wife involved in Flyfishing. So I took her to BassPro Shop. Bought her a White River Intruder 8wt 9' 4pc rod...Now some background info - I fish for Salmon, and large Pike/Musky on the fly. I was sceptical of the rod because it was $40. so the salesman took and set it up with some WF8F and we went to the pond outside the front door. The pond is 60' - so I started to cast - did a double haul and shot the line with precision to the rocks on the opposite side of the pond. Measured out it was 65'...Cool...So I bought 2 Plus a WR3 reel for my wife.

Spooled the reel with 150yds of Spiderwire braid, WF8F Scientific Angler, 5' Sinking Lead Core, 12' Leader/Tippet 8# floro

Took it out the other day and tied into a 43" musky. Est. weight of 25 pounds on the Susquehanna River near Wrightsville PA. using a 1/0 - 4 Salmon Slammer Optic - in Orange/Black.

The rod did a great job...My suggestion is to get one before they run out - its well worth the money. Rod blank is a Lamiglas and feels like a 45M Modulous.

Im going to take it Salmon Fishing in Michigan this fall, and look forward to its performance.

Good to hear, but how did you find out it is a Lamiglass blank?

Those are ok choices but the best go to for beginners where you arent going to run into having to immediatly upgrade if you enjoy it is the orvis clear water series. The are really great entry point http://www.theflystop.com/fly-fishing-rods/orvis They also sell a kit rod that includes reel and everything but its a bit dodgy
