Dang Pat, not what I wanted to hear.
I was planning a trip there this fri/sat and this is about the 3rd report like this from'accomplished' Starvy anglers such as yourself.
I think I may seriously consider heading somewhere else.

Wish I could give you more reason to be optimistic. But I have had a few "unofficial" reports from other seasoned Starvyites who are also dismayed at the poor fishing this year.

Earlier in the year...April into May...there were a lot more fish being caught. Mostly rainbows but a few walleyes too. And normally you can find quantities of active fish if you move around the lake checking out the traditional spots. But for some reason the fish seem to be fewer and tougher this year.

Entirely possible that they will show up and start biting somewhere. Last year they concentrated a lot up in the Strawberry River inlet arm for a while.

I'll wait for more favorable reports before I go back over.

I wish I'd spent a few minutes during my three days of trip prepping to check the BFT posts and saved myself some grief before near duplicating your day of misery for two straight days.

No blown tires, but we had the front anchor pull loose during Friday's storm when it was almost dark. Not fun trying to save the out-drive from the rocks for what seemed like an hour long micro burst wind episode. Luckily, my anchor had a ton of weeds stuck to it preventing a major butt whupping.

We too found the same issues all around the lake in the usually good spots for perch/walleye. All our favorite areas where we are typically able to coax up huge schools of newborn perch, none were to be found. We've always been able to find large quantities of crayfish at night too willing to play with the chicken legs or hot dogs, nothing this year. Something major has changed for sure.

If this is the bust cycle, it's certainly full on now. Should be some good walleye fishing later this year if there isn't the usual forage though. Sure miss those fat perch of days past.

I think the forage in the lake has crashed , not seeing chub or crayfish anymore it's a shame

You and I are among legions of former Starvy fans who are dismally disappointed in the current state of fishing affairs. I had to go back and reread my fishing logs of trips going back a few years. Until about 2 years ago (perch die-off) Starvation was the place to go if you wanted to catch lots of fish...with plenty of bigger fish in the bunch. But the last two years have been a struggle on every trip...just to catch a few fish.

There was a brief window earlier this spring when anglers were catching good numbers of rainbows and a few walleyes. But during the last month I have not had even one good report...and two poor ones from my visits.

Seems like all Utah waters go through cycles. The good times at Starvy were memorable. I guess we just have to wait for better times in the future. But some of us may not be able to wait it out. Ain't getting any younger ya know.

The chubs have been gone for some time. A few big ones survived for a few years after the population explosion of walleye and smallies. But the predators ate up the young as fast as they could be spawned. The big chubs finally reached the end of their life cycle and I haven't seen one for over 2 years.

And yes, the crawdad population has dropped way off too. The hordes of smallies are the main reason but trout and even walleyes eat them too. There were lots of baby crawdads showing up in all species early in the year but there was nothing in the bellies of the two walleyes I kept last week.

Perch are the main forage base in the lake right now. When the perch had that big die off two springs ago it put a dent in the food chain. Fewer perch meant fewer baby perch for all the predators. The surviving perch spawn okay but their newly hatched fry get slurped up before they can get any size. That means they will end up like chubs...only a few big ones that will die out if they are not able to create enough babies to feed the hungry masses.

The trout still do fine on the zooplankton and other invertebrates. But they also dine on crawdads and baby perch...when available.

Don't know what the answer is. Heck, I barely know any good questions.

I hope that the perch rebounds soon, but from the sounds of things it will be a while yet.Unsure

CoolHi Pat. Yeah, I kinda miss those kitties at Lincoln too. I've fished at Henry's Lake last weekend and the fishing was a little slow but I did land a 16 inch brookie (my largest brook to date)with the fairy wand, and a couple standard cuts, but no big ones, so that was fun, but I've gotta get after those Utah Lake cats. I think I'll go out in a week or two, but I need to get a new tube, so I'll be bank tanglin' on my next trip.

Let me know when you can get free and we can meetup. I can put you in an extra tube. Bait too. As long as I don't have to get you untangled from another kitty that hogties your legs together.

CoolPat, thanks a ton, sir! That would be most excellent. I might have to use a vacation day soon to go hit the cats with you on a weekday then when the power squadron are all mostly at work. I think I still have your digits, or I'll shoot you a p.m. here sometime soon.

I plan to get a new Fat cat tube later this fall or next spring.
