I'm privey to what's going on up here and I agree that its starting to go too far

. Where the only public access points to the lake are controlled by state parks, there needs to be some give and take in order to allow access to the water regardless of their intent to make money. Bear lake fishing charters is licensed to guide on bear lake, but if he is locked out because the only public access is controlled by a concessionaire that thinks he has exclusive rights to public access points then there needs to be something done. There should be at least one of the state ramps that can be used for this purpose. The money is not changing hands in the state park, so why would it be required of BLF charters to pay a portion of it to the new concessionaire? Any one else could come up and guide on the sly, but they know and are watching BLF charters now and its going to shut his guide business down if he can't gain access to the lake. He has spent a TON of time and money building up his business and is a top quality outfit. Its a shame if he gets pushed out in the name of greed.

I understand and support the idea behind not allowing the selling of food, fuel, and boat rentals WITHIN the state parks property that has been lawfully leased to the new concessionaire, but what about the guy that has a slip and wants his own mechanic to work on his boat? Its BS to have to pull it out of the marina if he doesn't want the onsite concessionaires mechanic to work on it.

There are a few other examples, but I think I'm making the point.

Its going too far now and sportsman should put a word out for one of our own and a really good man in my opinion. Contact state legislators and anyone else you can think of to help resolve this injustice. There is now a real monopoly on the commerce that can take place on bear lake and we should help in any way we can.

BTW, I don't think the solution is to boycott bear lake, that would only hurt the local businesses, but let's figure a way to bring this to light and end this crap now. Also, I'm not anti-concessionaire , I just don't think he should be allowed to squeeze out access to the lake just because he can't have a cut of the money. State parks should provide options.

Push out anyone whom he perceives as competition, or wants to make a buck on the water.

What is happening is that Bear Lake Fishing Charters has been legally guiding on bear lake for over two years now. Back before he started, he was talking with state parks he was told that he would need a coast guard merchant marine captains license and several other licenses and permits to be able to guide up here. He accomplished all of this at great time and expense and has sunk his heart and soul into running a top notch, quality guide outfit. He has guided clients from 38 different states, many of them repeat customers and he has a first class reputation as one of the only guys that can consistently get people on quality fish up here.

The problem now is that the state park Marina concession went up for its 10 year bid and it changed hands to BHL enterprises. He used to have a concession at rendezvous beach and then he picked up Cisco beach. He also has the concession license for the Idaho state park as well. Now, with his new concession license for the marina, he effectively has all of the public access ramps on the lake. He currently offers watercraft rentals, food, and fuel. He also apparently (and this is what many of us just found out) has the right to refuse people the right to use their own mechanics, mast hoisting services, and guide services. He currently has no guide service, but he is refusing Mr. Hobbs (BLF charters) the right to use the state park boat ramps to access the lake if he intends to guide on his boat. The state park apparently has decided to side with Mr. Hirshi (BHL enterprises) and not allow Mr. Hobbs to access the lake and has issued a directive to the state park rangers to escort him from the park and give him a citation if he is seen launching there.

Now I have no problem with Mr. Hirshi having exclusivity of the right to sell/rent watercraft, food, bait, fuel, etc. while inside the marina, but how is it that they can keep a licensed guide from accessing the lake at the only public access ramps on Bear Lake if the transactions are taking place outside the park at another place of business and the ramp is only being used to launch his boat and let his customers get on board? I even understand if Mr. Hobbs had a slip at the marina and not being allowed to let customers board his boat while At the slip, but this is not the case anyway. He is only entering the state park and launching his boat, and then he and his clients get on board and leave the marina to fish. Mr. Hobbs has a year round season state park pass and pays his way, but the bottom line is that if the concessionaire can't wrestle a piece of the profit from him then he doesn't want him to make a dime! Again, remember that the concessionaire doesn't even offer guided fishing trips and never has.

Bottom line is that many of us would like to see the state do the right thing and allow Mr. Hobbs a public ramp to launch at without having to pad Mr. Hirshis wallet for doing nothing more than having a monopoly on the access and services on Bear Lake.

I am not sugar coating Mr. Hobbs reputation either, I have no real dog in the fight except that I have known him for years and respect his honesty and work ethic and feel that there should be something that can be done to resolve this. I also am not trying to run the concessionaire into the ground for winning the bid and gaining control of the marina concessions, but it does bug the heck out of me that he is greedy enough about this issue that he is willing to help sink a guy that has invested his whole life savings (and I mean all of it!) and his heart and soul into providing a world class guide service.

If anyone else has an opinion lets hear it!

I can tell you Travis Hobbs is top notch. I fished with him last year and had a great time. I landed a 15 pound lake trout and my brother landed a 7 pound lake trout. Travis told me before the trip that the fishing was slow and said he would understand if we didn't want to come up. Being a fishreman I realize that being slow is part of fishing and went any way. He is a great guy to fish with and puts a lot of effort to make sure clients have fun. He also supports veterans and that is how I got a trip with Travis. He is an awesome guy and that one trip with Travis I learned a bunch. I was actually going to call him so the wife and I could do a trip then I saw his post. This outrageous. Good luck on the fight I hope you come out on top.

Bow nut, you may want to post this on other forums such as utah wildlife network and Facebook under cache valley fishing and utah fishing. It would get a lot of attention in all those places.

This is just wrong. Why would a concessionaire have any right to refuse launching to anyone who is not breaking any law ? just wrong. Let this be a lesson to anyone who wants to guide on Bear lake, don't tell them you're guiding, your competition is being taken care of for you. This is how our state does things. As our state fathers try to gain control of federal land, we can expect more and more of this. I for one, have written to my state representative. You all should too.

This is the same bovine scatology that has gone on at Flaming Gorge and Lake Powell. The feds tied up the ability to guide on the waters by requiring the Coast Guard license ( same one you needed to captain the Exon Valdez !!) and then you had to give a cut to the Concessionaire ( Del Webb wanted 50% and did not give any discounts to the guide). It is sad to hear that our Parks people are doing this at Bear Lake. Everyone needs to sign that petition and copies need to be put in every Sporting Goods, Fishing shop, Marine Shop in the state. We also need to let our legislators know what is going on and get them on the ball !! This cannot stand !!

This is down right dishonest and the legislature served it up to them on a silver platter when they shutdown private launches. I can guarantee I won't be doing any concession business and if they make it so my park pass isn't any good I'll forget the boat and stick with raspberry shakes if I can be sure the thief won't get a cut. This kind of crap shouldn't happen and I hope the petition will get their attention that someone was paying attention to their underhanded schananegans. If not it's time to do some impeaching, crooks shouldn't have public power. Seen this happen before to my in laws business when a public entity went beyond its bounds and pretty much bankrupted them. Glad you guys pointed this out. Later J

This is just a tragedy! And we really wonder why it is so hard to find a good, honest outfit to go with? BLF Charters is top notch and has done everything asked of him by the State and more. He is the first one to go on boat and civilian rescue when the State calls and asks for help. He has a big, safe boat. Has his Captains/Coast Guard certificates, and is the only one on the lake with them, and this is how he is repaid?

I personally think the the State, and any concessionaire would want that kind of operation in their association, just for the business/revenue/attraction value, and let them operate out of there at a discounted rate. You know, give a little, get a little. There goes all of his food and beverage sales, just because BLH decided to be a little greedy.

Also, the State is usually not in favor in any one entity having a monopoly in anything else in the state, so why would they do it with Bear Lake? BLH is building a new little store there on the dock, and I can tell you one thing for sure. Because of how this is being handled/manipulated I for one will NEVER buy ANYTHING from inside the Marine. I will take my boat out and drive down the road EVERY TIME I need gas, food or drink.

If people knew all of the details, there would be riots in the streets of Garden City. I feel for Mr. Hobbs. I always dreamed of doing what he has does with is outfit It takes balls, money and time. He did it the right way, and the legal way. Hats off to him for following the rules when there are so many other PIRATE GUIDES making money doing the same thing, but not legally.

I hope there is a change of action and one of the best things to happen to Bear Lake in a long time is able to make a living, provide a service and save lives when needed.

This statement is something you should consider," The state park apparently has decided to side with Mr. Hirshi (BHL enterprises) and not allow Mr. Hobbs to access the lake and has issued a directive to the state park rangers to escort him from the park and give him a citation if he is seen launching there."

Since BLFG works for the state, I would think that could be the reason he has not responded. Ever heard the saying about, "not biting the hand that feeds you"? Even if Scott or others there disagree with what the State is doing being vocal about it, might get him in hot water.

Why? Because he might have an opinion? I didn't know that was against the rules.

He may have an opinion and may have signed the petition. However most companies do keep track of social media and if you work for a company and start spouting negative comments it can and will get one in trouble. In this case it is wise that he hasn't spoken up.
