     DORKED on Utah
I don't know why I keep watching Gary Winterton's program "Hooked on Utah". Maybe it's because he sometimes covers waters with which I am not familiar. I record the programs and as soon as I see he is doing the same ol' same ol' stuff I hit the delete button. Sometimes I grind my teeth through a third to half of a program before I can't stand it anymore.

Last night's program had potential...Huntington North. Never fished it but it's on my radar as a multispecies pond...with wipers, largemouths, catfish, etc. So I watched...most of it.

He just about lost me when he brought in his first big chub...foul hooked in the tail...and referred to it as a "sucker". Then he called it a sucker two or three more times...and the local he was with did not correct him.

In between a few trout and a few wipers they caught several more "suckers" (chubs). I kept waiting for him to make the correction on air...but he didn't. Is he really so uneducated on Utah species that he can't tell the difference?

Oh yeah, on each of them he reared back on the rod and announced..."This is a good fish". At least he was consistent that way.

Yeah, that "sucker" drives me nuts too and sometimes I wonder why I even bother watching/recording it. I think he's one of those few people that I would not care to fish with. And his wife is even worse. Frown

I got a nice chuckle about that, after initially ranting to my wife that he got the species ID wrong the first time he did it. I suppose at this point my expectations for the show are low enough that I'm not overly bothered by the errors.

And for some reason I keep watching the show every week I'm in town. Crazy

I caught you a delicious bass.

So are the Wipers there to wipe out the "suckers" or is there another forage species in the pond ?? I fished YEARS ago when LMB were was about the only thing in it. Chubs have always been there along with the LMB and kitycats, plus the obligatory stocked bows.

Wipers are a fairly recent addition...to help reduce the chubs. They are doing what they are supposed to do and this lake seems to be going like other formerly over-chubbed lakes...with predator control. The numbers of larger chubs remains visible but the small ones are disappearing quickly into the predators guts...resulting in fewer and fewer small chubs being seen in DWR net samplings.

Starvation is probably our best example of what heavy predation (walleyes and smallies) can do to a chub population. As you no doubt recall Starvy used to be wall to wall chubs. Couldn't get a bait or lure down to the trout through the chubs. But within a few short years of calling in the cavalry (wallies and smallies) they had eaten themselves out of groceries and started stunting. Then the perch "magically" appeared and the world was saved.

But the big chubs can live to be over 20 years old and they kept spawning each year...while declining due to natural attrition. Some of the last few chubs I caught before about 2010...and they finally disappeared altogether...were chub-ugly. Big distended gut and lesions all over their skin.

Jordanelle has pretty much gone the same way and it is possible that Huntington will too.

There are more and more anglers heading for Huntington to fish for the wipers. Gofish435 on the board lives in Price and is strictly a fly fisherman. He had done well at times on the fairy wand fishing for wipers. Much fun on a six weight.

I have expressed my opinion of the show (more than once). But I would not propose to dissuade anybody else from watching it just because I find fault with it. You watch it a few times and form your own opinion.

To be fair, Gary does present good info on many interesting spots...and does not really do what we might call "hot spotting" on places that cannot stand a bit more pressure. In fact, he deliberately withholds info on places that he judges as not capable of handling more angling pressure. Some of our former Utah fishing program hosts were not as discerning and we have witnessed the results.

Hum where do i start? I know tube dude someone who is looked up to on this sight i never thought i would see you post anything that would bash and discourage any other outdoorsmen to not tune in on a great tv show and start a witch hunt or bashing spree on a guy who is trying his best to get PPL men women and KIDS HOOKED on the outdoors!!! You know he may not live up to your expectations or entertain you the way you feel needed! But i personally know my two boys have the upmost respect for him! Along with a few other family members and really good friends that have see what it takes to put together a TV show! Not to mention he takes his FAMILY out on alot of his adventures!!! Because isnt that what its all about???? So i challenge anyone who thinks its easy to give it a shot!!! So the guy made a mistake!!! Big deal i guess everyone is perfect and never make a mistake!!! Look bottom line is if he doesnt tickle your fancy then simply dont watch but to start a post that you know will bash another outdoors/sportsman i thought was unexcaptable on this site!!!he has done ALOT!!! For ppl who other wise would NEVER get a chance to experance the outdoors!!! And i thank him for that. As we all should!

I agree with kidscomefirst. I thought tube dude was above this kind of post. I record them all watch some, and fast forward through others. Each viewer should make up their own mind about the show without someone bashing the show on this forum.

Everyone to their own tastes...said the old maid as she kissed the cow.

I did not try to discourage anyone from watching his show and forming his own opinions. All instructional shows...like cooking, home improvements or whatever...are aimed toward a specific audience or at least appeal to certain people more than others.

I'm the first to admit that Gary's shows might help some folks who are still a ways down the learning curve. But the way he handles fish and his repetitive use of the same old trite expressions quickly turn off more experienced anglers.

My little "tirade" in this thread was simply pointing out a major goof. And since we have had several discussions on Gary's shows in the past it is nothing new on these boards. I did not attack him. Merely pointed out a very glaring error. Anybody who holds themselves up as fishing experts should be above that kind of thing and are leaving themselves open to potshots. And if he can't take it he should not be putting himself in the public eye.

Hang around awhile, make some worthwhile contributions to the board and I will take your criticism more seriously. We all have to earn our respect around here.

I had to stop recording it! Got sick of only being interested in 1/5 episodes, turning them on only to delete them within the first 5 minutes. We need a good Utah fishing show that explores lesser know lakes like Miners and Electric and what not!

I have to admit that Mr Winterton should be informed about species identification if is to be the the fisherman that is to represent the state of Utah as a person in the know. As for the title of the show; Hooked on Utah, it is somewhat ironic that a lot of the shows aren't about fishing in Utah!

I have never seen the show on TV. So I looked it up on the Two Yubes thing.

I only watched a few segments, but I wasn't overly impressed. Mostly, I was disappointed that many or most of the shows were about hunting or non-Utah adventures. It probably should be called "Hooked on the Outdoors" or suchlike.

If you enjoy it, by all means watch it. If he encourages kids to get outside and do something, more power to him. I can forgive the occasional gaffe like calling a chub a sucker (although a game warden might not be so tolerant if an endangered species were involved...)

I won't be trying to find the show on TV, although I won't avoid it, either.

At the risk of irritating some folks, the same could be said about the Sportsman for Fish and Wildlife. They use fish in the title of their organization but most of there contributions are for big game and big money.Unsure

These types of shows are certainly geared toward the less experienced anglers, since there are a whole lot more of them than the expert anglers. I consider my self a decent angler, and enjoy watching various types of outdoors shows or reading articles. If nothing else, I can get a little nugget of information, or an idea to try on the waters I do fish.

A couple weeks back, I heard a bunch of whooping and hollering down at UL by some anglers. " look at the size of that fish, that is a monster" were a few things spit out of their mouths along with some expletives.

As I wondered over to see the big catch, there it was a 16 inch channel. They enjoyed it and had a good time with it. I let them have there fun, and I continued to catch several fish all significantly larger than theirs.

They had fun, I had fun, and no need to put a damper on it.

But he should have correctly identified a chub, and could have then talked about how to use it for bait, why some species are introduced into lakes with chubs etc.

That lake drives me nutty most times.
As you know avoid it like an ex wife during a weekend.

Yeah, I'll definitely have to put it on my dance card for sometime after Labor Day. And I'll give you fair warning so you can show up and help me catch some of those suckers.

Hey, talk about misidentification... I just got my boat unloaded at Lincoln last week and a boat backed in to launch on the north side of me. As they prepared to launch they spotted the swirl of baby mudders just off the side of the launch and identified them immediately as"pollywogs and excellent bait for the big blue cats they were after."

Hmmm.... I considered offering a bit of my free knowledge but decided I was late getting out to Bird Island to try for some of the halibut that frequent that area. Wink

I never sneeze to be demazed at how ill-informed many of our Utah anglers are when they go afield. You'd think that after they invest their time and money in vehicles, boats, tackle, food and gas that they could spend a few minutes learning species and regulations. I have largely quit even trying to set folks straight when they misidentify a fish or spout off incorrect personal translations of the regs. Too many goobers who want to fight if you call them on a mistake.

By the way, the halibut fishing at the island might be a bit slow. The swordfish have been using them as target practice. But you might do well on sailfish when the wind comes up.

I read this entire thread. The thought that continued to come to my mind was this: what about all of the people on this site that use "minnows" for bait, when in reality they are using shiners, chubs, suckers, or some other "small" fish. Isn't that also mis-identification?

All you fellers that are being overly critical might ought to take a quick look in the mirror.

Tube -- if it bother's you that bad, then simply stop watching. No reason to rant over it. Hell, you want to get some really bad info, just switch over the Sportsman Channel, or Outdoor Channel and watch some of those fishing shows. Or, watch Shark Week on Discovery. Or any Salmon fishing show. They'll all mis-identify two or three species without a second thought about it.

Top predator in the ocean a Great White Shark? ha! what a laugh....

That's why I don't take my tube out to Bird Island anymore. Last time I was out there I got pulled out of my tube by this guy. I guessed him to be a sucker and since it is illegal to keep any kind of sucker on Utah Lake I released him.

Minnow- any of various small fish that are less than a designated size and are not game fish

Sounds like what I use.
